Sounds, at least vaguely, like you are referring to the "sport" of geocaching. People set up "treasure chests" at a specific point, usually someplace interesting, then log the GPS coordinates of this cache on the internet. Then, those with a GPS reciever go and discover the cache using the exact coordinates given. The idea is that you take one item from the chache and leave something for someone else. There are thousands of these hotspots across the globe. Check out www.geocaching.com for a database of these spots.
