The old mare watched the tractor work
a thing of rubber and steel
ready to follow the slightest wish
of the man who held the wheel.
She said to herself as it passed by,
you gave me an awful jolt,
but there's still one thing you can't do,
you cannot raise a colt.

A colt or two she had raised in her day, before the riders had split the herd, driven the wild ones home, divided and deported them from their native desert scrub lands. A colt or two not for reasons that any human would want to replicate her heavy head, her course features, her undesirably dipped neck, her short and choppy stride. No, unhandled Nature had governed her contributions to the wild gene pool and surely her breeding days were now over. Wheezing a hollow sigh, not for disappointment but simple boredom, the dusty little mare, just over 13 hands, meandered her enclosure, content at last in solitude. A good five years or more separated her from her memories of freedom, making her, at nine years old, still prime enough for use if only her training was considerably polished off. She knew the weight of a saddle and rider, was not particularly fond of but nevertheless tolerated the cold taste of a bit, and was reasonably sensitive to reins upon her neck. A finishing project with not many prospects in any show ring, lest the object be to show off the shabbiest horse in any stable. But such affairs were hardly her concern and her attention fell solely, in the absence of humans or horses about, to bending awkwardly to twist her head and lips as far under the fence as possible to reach the short-shorn grass beyond.

Morning Juniper (Juniper)
buckskin mustang mare
approximately 9 years of age
13.2 hands
broke to Western saddle, not ridden recently, so needs some work. Introduced to working cattle, may have potential in that area. Otherwise, a fairly steady trail horse. Not fond of dogs, but takes some work to rouse a kick out of her. Level-headed, intelligent, crafty if she thinks she might get away with a prank.
