Walter felt everything shake as he reached out to the railing of the bed and clutched it as slowly the blonde head turned towards Michael, eyes closed. But there was no doubt. As soon as Michael had said her name, even in that bastardized way that Michael shortened it, Walter knew.

“Sugar?”

Michael looked at the closed eye face of Nikita and stroked her hair back. She looked a lot better now than she did a month ago. Some of the weight had come back on. There was no doubt that she looked better than when Michael was finally able to see her in the other hospital.

When the doctors tried to tell him that she was brain-dead.

“What did Section do to her? What did that animal and his mistress try to do to my sweet innocent Sugar?”

Michael could see Walter turning tense with anger and Michael pulled his hand away from Nikita’s face, happy that she had turned towards him when he call her name. That had started a couple weeks ago but didn’t always happen every time. “They didn’t know.”

Walter blinked his eyes as he dropped his hand from the railing. “What?”

“I got her out… and I tried to let her be free…” Michael rasped as he watched Walter sit down in the other empty seat. “She was on the outside, Walter.”

“She helped you?”

“It wasn’t the plan,” Michael swung his head from side to side. “I almost… brought her back… I probably should have… but I couldn’t bring her back.”

“When?” Walter inquired.

“Lyons,” Michael whispered as he thought back to the boat and closed his eyes. Those were details that he did not desire to go into with Walter right now. It would do no good.

“You knew all the way back then and you didn’t tell me?”

“I couldn’t tell anyone,” Michael shook his head from side to side. “And I tried to keep her out… and for a while it worked… Nikita became a nurse… but I knew where she was… and I would find reasons to see her… and she was a good operative, no matter what Madeline and Operations thought.”

Michael closed his eyes. Those stolen moments were so precious. “But she was there even when I asked her not to be. She… she was the one… that figured out… Adam…”

“She knew about Adam?”

“And Elena,” Michael jerked his head up and down. He had been terrified that when he left with Elena that night that he would never have contact with Nikita again. Instead, the next morning Nikita was hidden in his front seat. It was while he drove away from that house that Nikita said that she could tell that Adam was not Michael’s son and told him not to believe any of the tests. Nikita, being a nurse, got the tests done again and since never tied to Section, proved what she could sense – Adam was not Michael’s son. Michael’s eyes must have told Walter enough as he shook his head. “She always had a sixth sense about you, Michael… but why… didn’t you tell me?”

“Walter,” Michael chided him as he knew that Walter was hurt by this decision. “I knew how you felt about her. I knew how she was like the daughter you never had… and I couldn’t risk her… especially once things started to work towards… this.”

“This was meant to happen?” Walter almost growled as he looked over at Nikita. Michael squeezed his eyes shut. “No… this happened after she was out in the clear… our plans… were perfect. This was an accident... with a little girl who was wandering on the streets alone…”

Michael could feel how it felt when he got that text message while he was standing in Section One, hoping to be part of the conversation about how Section One was done. But with those few words in text, his life changed because he wasn’t sure if all that he had gone thru to free himself, and more importantly to completely free Nikita, would yield them any time together.

“It was bad… but I didn’t believe what they were telling me… and it wasn’t a good hospital… it was one that Nikita even refused to take shifts from… but she was unstable to start with… and not breathing on her own,” Michael explained as he allowed the emotions to come across his face and crack in his voice. He knew that it would hurt Walter, but he had to know how far Nikita had come. “I knew that she was still alive… any little spark, was Nikita… and if all I ever got was her pulse calming down when I was around… I was going to take it.”

Walter was silent as he looked at the bed. “All this time, Michael.”

“Healing,” Michael looked at Walter. “Remember, Section did things to Nikita… before she was… cancelled…”

Walter exhaled, “Phasing shell.”

Michael jerked his head up and down and rubbed his face. “I have no doubt… they would have played with her when Adrian came back…they would have tried to change her… and thank god that didn’t happen to her… I may not have gotten this…”

“What is this?” Walter looked around as he was very quiet.

“She is waking up,” Michael announced as he nodded his head up and down. “She is coming back to me.”

Walter leaned back in the chair and folded his hands. “Michael… the mind... it can heal… but sometimes…”

“Sometimes it forgets things… or comes back at an earlier time… maybe even a time that Nikita didn’t trust me… or even know me,” Michael paused and swallowed. “But she’ll know you too… that’s why I need more here… when there was no sign that waking up was soon, I could step away and not worry… but if she wakes… she may think she is still an operative… she may start running from Section.”

“Hell,” Walter sighed as he leaned back. “This was the two cent tour, right?”

Michael nodded his head up and down. There was so much more to this story and there were so many things that Nikita was involved in that it would even blow Walter’s mind. She had been the only operative on the outside, but Nikita had been on a mission, to save Michael. That made her a large army and it was time for that solider to be awarded for the duty served by spending time with the person who loved her most.
