“Nao…” Nikita murmured as she moved her head to the side. Some would think that it was just a sound that she was making, but Michael had seen this before. Her muscles were tenser than before and it was the classic sign of her having a nightmare while in her recovery. The difference now was that the movements were more frequent as were the sounds, although it was barely comprehendible words. But he knew that the sound was actually Nikita saying no.
It was all signs of Nikita healing.
She hadn’t opened her eyes again from earlier in the morning, but Michael could tell that things were changing quickly. It was a bit unnerving to the nurses as they came into the room to see Nikita moving and making sounds. There had been days that had gone by without anything and then maybe a movement or sound once a day. But now her head moved again. “No…”
“I’m here, Kita…” Michael spoke as he touched her clutched hand and wondered what was her dream that was causing this.
It wasn’t that she hadn’t had a nightmare before. A couple weeks before Michael had contacted Walter there had been a period of about two hours where she was thrashing around and making sounds. The staff in the hospital were sure that it was because she was having some sort of seizure. They ran tests and put her into the machines to try to prove that it was a seizure and use it as evidence of why she wasn’t going to get better.
Just as suddenly as it started, it ended. It was then that Michael realized that it must have been something like a nightmare.
It was also another sign that the staff had their answer to what they thought would become of Nikita. Michael had known that but it had just confirmed it more. Or at least the administration, who was willing to take his money, and the senior doctors. The nurses were the only ones who saw things that Michael saw.
“Mic…Mic…Mic…” Nikita rattled out as her head shook from side to side. Michael felt the sounds shooting thru his heart and there was nothing that he could do right now.
“Maybe the doctors can do something,” Walter spoke as he entered the room. “She said she was in pain… and they did nothing.”
“They didn’t hear that,” Michael swallowed out as he turned and looked at Walter. “And this is all a good sign, Walter. It means that her brain has healed enough to start putting things together. But it has to relearn the paths and that is going to mean some bad connections.”
“Where did you come up with that line of bullshit?” Walter shook his head.
“From Dr. Marlow Carle,” Michael spoke and he watched the shock go across Walter’s eyes. He was stunned that Michael had a doctor to talk to that he hadn’t met yet. “I have Skyped with her… she is the only doctor that seemed to be… up to speed on things.”
Walter paced from side to side. “She examined Nikita via a webcam?”
“She’ll be examining her soon in person. I need you to go meet her at the airport,” Michael stood up as he looked down at Nikita, wishing he had been able to talk Dr. Carle into coming here sooner. He probably should have pushed harder.
“Why the hell hasn’t she been here?”
“You’ll see when you meet her. She’ll be with someone that you know,” Michael looked at Walter and knew not to drag this out. He glanced at Nikita and swallowed again.
Nikita came into the light in the small Bistro along the banks of one of the many canals in Venice. She was not pleased and Michael didn’t blame her. “I don’t understand why I’ve been hopping from city to city so close to finals, Michael.”
“It wasn’t my decision,” Michael motioned for a chair and waited for Nikita to sit down. She didn’t lean back and she was on edge. “This isn’t a bad thing.”
“I’ve been on three trains, a couple planes and even a bus and a boat,” Nikita retorted and Michael shook his head. They took precautions, but all that traveling was unnecessary. Michael hated the game that was being played right now.
“I had to be sure that you were the type of woman I thought you were,” Adrian spoke as she stepped out from the door of the Bistro with the three coffees in her hand. “And you surprised me.”
“By not following the directions?” Nikita questioned with a raised eyebrow. Adrian chuckled as she handled Michael a coffee and then sat down before extended a cup to Nikita. “I knew that you would do that, dear. I just had to see how you would do that.”
Nikita didn’t sip at the coffee and Michael settled close to Nikita. “Nikita, this is Adrian.”
“Who are you to me?” Nikita inquired as she arched an eyebrow.
“I’m almost as dead as you are to Section,” Adrian smoothly retorted as she folded her hands. “And I saw how you were able to take that side trip to the phones… correcting the faulty intel that would have sent Michael on a mission to the middle of Russia in a day if you hadn’t fixed that.”
“I wanted to spend time with Michael.”
“You wanted what was right for Michael and the good people. And not give Madeline and Operations the ability to endanger others,” Adrian smiled as she reached over and patted Nikita’s hand. “And after you finish your tests and past, you are I are going to get to know each other a bit more… and I’ll tell Michael that I won’t be able to stop you from being involved in those missions that scare you about his well-being… because I’m going to need both of you to do this.”
Michael swallowed as he wasn’t sure how Nikita was going to take this.
“Do what?”
“Close Section One, my dear. And get all the good out,” Adrian smiled as she then took a sip of her own coffee so she could watch the reaction in Nikita’s eyes. And she saw exactly what she wanted.
“Michael… Michael,” Walter spoke as he came up closer to the bed. “Who?”
“Adrian,” Michael didn’t look at Walter as Nikita’s body slackened, the nightmare that she was in over, finally. Michael stroked her hair back. “She refused to come see Nikita like this.”
“Adrian knows my Sugar?”
Michael didn’t respond. He took a steady breathe and looked at Nikita. “She’ll probably bring you flowers, Kita… you two did get along so well. Two very strong women…”
Walter wasn’t sure what was going on but he was sure that Michael wasn’t going to give him any more answers. It had been so difficult to get anything from him since he arrived here in this hospital. Walter wanted answers but this wasn’t the place. Michael was focused on only what Nikita needed and for now he was determined that it was this Dr. Marlow Carle, who somehow knew Adrian.
Walter pushed back to the spinning headache and wondered if this was Michael’s way of bringing someone else in that would answer the questions that Walter had been flinging at Michael.
There would be only one way to tell.
