Michael eased into the chair beside Nikita’s bed and stroked his hand thru her hair. He would make sure that she got cleaned up tomorrow. It had been a long day and he was just happy that Nikita had calm down after hours of restlessness of muttering groans and mostly the word “no” while weakly fighting against some unseen being.
Dr. Carle had arrived and examined Nikita. She indicated that this was more of an indication that Nikita was getting close to being awake. While that was good to hear, it brought other questions to Michael’s mind that he hadn’t really truly thought about. What would Nikita be able to do? Would there be cognitive ramifications to the injury that she had that would never be overcome? How much would she remember?
Would she remember him?
He pushed those thoughts away when Dr. Carle had suggested that since Nikita would at times calm down with him nearby that maybe that she would get out of the so-called nightmares if Michael actually held Nikita. Dr. Carle had been upset to find out that everyone wanted Michael to always stay on the other side of the bed railing. It was clear that the two were connected and when she said so, she heard Michael tell the story of when he had done so in the past, he was caught and reprimanded.
So much was not known about how the human brain would heal that Dr. Carle was outraged, but not surprised. But she was relieved that Michael had at times done what his gut told him to do. She was sure that Nikita got to this point in her healing due to Michael and his gut had told him what was needed.
About an hour after wrapping his arms around Nikita, she calmed.
But then she had calmed so much that it was eerie. Michael had slipped out of the bed and even got dinner with Adrian, who refused to actually come into Nikita’s room until Nikita was awake. He had come back to the room to find Walter reading a book to Nikita. He closed the book and then slipped out of the room to parts unknown.
Michael rolled his head around as he leaned back in the chair, relaxing as he knew that things were turning around now. That was when he glanced back to the bed and saw Nikita’s eyes calmly open, looking right at him. “Kita…”
Her eyes blinked and he watched as her tongue moistened her lips. “Mic…he…al”
Michael’s heart raced. She knew him! He nodded his head up and down, unable to find the words that Michael had been sure that he would have. There had been too many things that he wanted to say to her, so many things that he had rehearsed saying to her.
Nikita’s eyes closed and Michael feared that those seconds were all that he was going to get and he didn’t say anything that mattered. But then her mouth moved as she opened her eyes again, looking right at him. “I… saw… him.”
Her words were slow to form but they were understandable. She had her language skills intact and Michael wept silently for joy inside. But he wasn’t sure what Nikita was talking about. It could have meant so many things.
“Him…” Nikita spoke again as her eyes opened a bit more, stronger. “Op… Oper…”
“Operations?” Michael questioned and Nikita nodded her head with a groan. Michael rubbed his head and wasn’t sure what to think about what Nikita was saying.
“I… passed him… you didn’t… want... me…” Nikita struggled to speak and each word brought Michael the clarity that his mind was missing. It had been the one thing that Nikita had wanted to do when Michael and Adrian had outlined how Section One was going to meet the safe end. Operations was setup to walk down a busy tourist street. Nikita had suggested that he needed to be off his game and that she would be the perfect way to knock him off-balance.
It wasn’t the first time that Nikita had tried to get in front of Operations. But neither Michael nor Adrian thought that it was a good idea. It was a risk that neither wanted Nikita to take, especially if things didn’t go as planned and they had to regroup and try again. It was so close to the end that they didn’t want Nikita to get caught now. Not years later.
“He… saw me…” Nikita weakly smiled as she shifted and looked at Michael. “It is… over… right?”
“Yes,” Michael’s voice squeaked as he nodded his head up and down. He swiped his hand over his face and then reached for Nikita. “It’s over…”
He didn’t dare tell her that it had been over for a while now. He knew that they would get to what had happened to her at some point, but right now wasn’t the time. Michael just wanted to see Nikita’s eyes open and that was happening. She wasn’t going to sleep now. She was still with him.
“He… was stunned,” Nikita slurred as she winced with pain and then looked at Michael. “You… finished…”
Michael closed his eyes as he could see the moment that he had pulled the trigger and killed Operations. It felt like it was almost in cold blood, but it wasn’t. Operations had been bad and had twisted something that was probably meant to be created for a good reason into something that served his own needs. Operations had killed many in cold blood and had others do the dirty work for him.
Others could have taken the assignment, but Michael didn’t give that opportunity to anyone else. He had to be sure that it was done and it had been done.
“Yes,” Michael nodded his head up and down.
“I… don’t… remember…” Nikita frowned as she closed her eyes. “After… he walked away… not sure if he really knew that it was me… but enough… to confuse him… I blew him a kiss… but I remember… nothing…”
Michael stroked Nikita’s cheek and she winced. Michael then took her hand. “He didn’t do this to you, Kita…”
“I remember… pain… pain,” Nikita rasped as she looked at Michael, tears in her eyes. She shifted and looked at Michael. Something had become clear to her. “It’s been… long…”
Michael pressed his lips together. No words.
“Right?” Nikita questioned and Michael nodded his head up and down, still unable to verbally respond. She groaned and closed her eyes. “Pounding…”
“Just rest, Kita…” Michael finally spoke as she could see that she was trying to keep herself awake and that it was causing her pain. He wanted her to be awake, but not with pain. Not like that at all. “I’ll get someone to help with the pain, ok? They’ll help now…”
The door opened and Dr. Carle walked in with a needle in her hand. She nodded her head solemnly as she walked over to the bag as Nikita repeated the words pain and pounding. Michael didn’t watch the medicine go in. He just watched as Nikita’s body almost immediately started to react from the medicine and soon she was peacefully asleep.
Michael felt Dr. Carle’s hand on his shoulder and Michael tensed up as he looked at her. “Is she going to always be in pain?”
“I don’t know,” Dr. Carle honestly admitted as she looked at Michael. “But this is just the start… this is going to be a long marathon, Michael. But you got her thru the hardest part all by yourself. Now you have help.”
“I can’t stand when she is in pain.”
“But she didn’t tell you first about the pain,” Dr. Carle pointed out as she started towards the door. “I know that you didn’t plan on her being part of that mission…”
“She wouldn’t have gotten hurt like this if she hadn’t gone to walk past him…”
“You don’t know that,” Dr. Carle shrugged her shoulders. “But it sounded like Nikita needed that closure.”
“Now she needs to get better,” Michael roughly spoke as he stood up and shoved his hands in his pockets. “We need our time together. We earned it.”
