Trea carefully stepped down off of the small step stool as her hands held onto the counter top. She normally wouldn’t have needed a step stool to reach that shelf. She should have been able to just get up on her tip toes, but getting up on her toes was something that was still difficult even after her fractures had healed.
She was putting supplies away from the shopping trip to the two craft stores that she had done with Jasmine. It was nice getting out and Trea felt more of the dread of the world that she had found herself fading into was actually lifting away from her.
“You don’t look like you need any help in here,” Oak spoke as he stepped into the arts cabin. Trea turned as she shook her head. “I’m ok.”
“You look really happy,” Oak commented as he went to the only table that didn’t have benches on top of it and sat down. Trea moved to the table and sat down across from him. “I think I’m going to like teaching crafts this summer.”
“Really?” Oak asked as he was surprised to hear this. He thought that Trea had a lot of physical therapy ahead of her still. He didn’t want her to give up on that because it looked like while she was getting around, she still had a lot to work on.
“Part time,” Trea replied as she could see that Oak was concerned. “I’ll have physical therapy three days a week in the morning.”
Oak sighed in relief. “That’s good to know.”
“And I’ll be seeing Heather on the other two mornings… that’s down from the three times a week,” Trea revealed as she pushed her hair back and looked at Oak. “You don’t need to worry about me, Oak. I’m getting better.”
“I can see that, Trea,” Oak replied back smoothly. “But you can’t help me being concerned.”
“Well, maybe someday that won’t be your job any longer,” Trea hitched a half smile as she rolled her shoulders back. “You’ll be busy in the stable this summer.”
“But we have a new leader at the stable… I didn’t want to come up with programs for the girls… and Michael… well, he should be busy with other things,” Oak explained as he readjusted his body on the bench. “She sounds cool.”
“She?”
“Her name is Carla… I think it is Carla Mundoz…” Oak spoke and Trea lifted her head. “Carla Munoz? From the Las Vegas area?”
Oak tilted his head to the side and started to nod his head. “That sounds correct. I know that she worked in Las Vegas. Originally from Texas. How do you know her?”
“If it’s the same woman… she was a vet assistant at the one rodeo stop around Vegas,” Trea blinked her eyes with a nervous laugh. “Small world.”
“Please tell me that you remembered her because you got a long with her,” Oak questioned and Trea laughed. “Yeah… I got along with her… she had respect for what I did in the rodeo and I was jealous that she didn’t have to stay at the rodeo…”
Oak shifted and stood up. “I should get back.”
“Meeting Hunter?” Trea questioned and Oak stopped. He closed his eyes and shook his head. “Ah… Hunter isn’t around right now.”
“When he comes back then…you are going to do something with him tonight, right?” Trea inquired and Oak turned while shaking his head negatively from side to side. “Hunter won’t be back tonight… he went to Toronto to start shooting a film.”
“Really?” Trea was surprised. Just the last time she talked to him, Hunter was complaining how hard it was to find an acting job now that he had admitted to being a homosexual.
“It’s a small independent movie… not a blockbuster or anything… but he was really excited,” Oak explained as he rubbed his hands together. “He’ll be gone most of the summer.”
“If you aren’t in charge of the girls at the stable…maybe you should visit him?” Trea suggested. Oak shrugged his shoulders. He wasn’t sure where he stood right now with Hunter especially after how quickly he had left after being called for the movie. Oak understood that it was what Hunter was waiting for, but barely a word was said to Oak before Hunter started to pack. “Maybe. But it’s going to be busy at the camp. There are two more camp sites… and the special camps that Nikita arranged…”
“I like the last week,” Trea spoke as she stood up and stretched her lower back. “Children who have had a really hard time… they need to have fun too.”
“It should be a good session,” Oak spoke but he wasn’t quite sure about it. Girls were difficult at times, but bringing in girls who had behavioral issues could be a whole different thing. He was not the only camp staff person asking for extra personnel to be available that week. Heather was trying to get some of her professional friends to volunteer that week and Oak hoped that it happened. “I better get back.”
“Go find out where Michael and Nikita are now,” Trea joked and Oak nodded his head. He was sure that by the time he got back to the lodge Walter was going to have the world map up with all the little red flags up where there were reports of seeing the happy couple.
