Carla walked with a few other members from the stable staff towards the mess hall. It had been a light week and it was good. Carla had learned a lot from just having the girls around and was going to make some changes for her plans next week.
Everyone was right that the girls wanted nothing to do with the riding circle, grooming the horses, dressage, or anything too formal.
Turning the corner, Carla took a deep breath as Oak stood there. He was staring at her and she smiled brightly back at Oak just to make him more upset. She knew that she was pushing his buttons, but she continued to smile as she walked over and talked to a few of the girls who had just departed the stable before lunch.
“Can we talk?” Oak asked as he walked towards her and after the girls had started to play some sort of game that involved slapping their hands together and chanting. It was something that Oak didn’t understand and he didn’t care to learn about the game right now.
“Why don’t we enjoy lunch together at the same table?” Carla countered with a smile, sure that Oak was going to turn away and go sulk with his friends. She did not realize that Davenport was not around and was not planning on being at lunch.
“I think that is a rather nice idea,” Oak replied back as he turned and flashed his own sarcastic grin.
Carla blinked her eyes as Oak turned away and walked up the ramp. He opened the door and turned towards her. “After you, Carla.”
She walked up the ramp and knew that she could not get out of this. In fact, a couple of the girls had overheard the conversation and thought that the table was going to be interesting and fun to be at. The girls liked Carla and they liked Oak. They had no clue about the undercurrent between the two.
Carla stepped into the mess hall and watched as Oak selected a table right in the middle. She swallowed hard as a girl was doing her task of setting the table before the lunch doors were opened. “I heard we are having chicken salad today for lunch…” Carla spoke and Oak pulled out the head chair for Carla.
Carla settled down and looked as Oak moved to the other side of the table. “Maybe we can talk before the girls come in,” Carla suggested as she leaned forward. Oak blinked his eyes as the doors were opened up and the thought of talking before the girls got into the room was lost.
The lunch was going on rather well until they ran out of the first pitch of fruit punch. Oak placed his fork down and looked at Carla. “It’s nice that the camp isn’t so packed this week.”
The girls started to agree with Oak. Several said that it was nice because there was more time spent with them and Carla slowly nodded her head up and down. “It’s a nice way to start the summer.”
“If it wasn’t busy… why was Ladybird the horse you selected today to ride?” Oak asked as he tilted his head to the side. Carla swallowed hard and smiled back at Oak. “Nikita and I have an arrangement, Oak. I’m glad that you are concerned about Nikita’s horse, but I have it under control.”
Oak waited until he could fill his glass up and he took a sip before clearing his throat. He turned to the girl to his right. “Have you ever had anyone you know disappoint you?”
Carla watched as Oak flashed his eyes at her and she sighed. “I don’t think this is an appropriate conversation for lunch, Oak.”
“Maybe it wasn’t appropriate in Las Vegas… but I think the girls here know the difference between keeping a promise and breaking a promise,” Oak spoke with a calm voice but his eyes were causing Carla’s blood pressure to spike.
“Camp is about fun and I can’t help it if you don’t know how to have fun, Oak,” Carla coolly replied as she knew that she wasn’t answering to what Oak was saying, but trying to deflect the conversation. She just wanted to shout at him, but she didn’t.
“I don’t know how to have fun?” Oak asked as he leaned back in his chair. “Do you girls really like riding in the ring? Do you find that posting stuff fun?”
Several of the girls shook their heads slightly from side to side to indicate no but they stopped as they looked at Carla. She folded her hands on the table and tried to count to five.
She got to three.
“You never know when the basics are necessary. But you wouldn’t know that because you aren’t in charge, are you?” Carla arched an eyebrow back as she smiled. “You wanted me to be in charge.”
“I didn’t know you,” Oak snapped back.
“And you haven’t given me a chance, Oak. Surely that is a bad example for these precious girls,” Carla reached out and touched the girl to her right to pat her gently. Oak snorted and rolled his eyes. “Yeah, they all like looking up to you and your uptight rules…. If I knew that the stables were going to be run by such an iron fist, I would have taken on the responsibility.”
“You sound like a poor sport right now. It isn’t exactly the way you want it and now you want to cry all the way back home…” Carla retorted as she rolled her eyes. “You have to listen to me.”
“I don’t report to you. I don’t have to do anything in that stable and I’d still have a job,” Oak sat up straight.
The two were bickering back and forth that they did not realize that their voices were getting louder, that more people were watching them, and more importantly, someone had moved into action.
“Oak. Carla. Outside,” Nikita’s voice was loud and sharp. She stood off to the side of the table and had her hands on her hips. It was clear that she was pissed and she wanted them to move.
“We are eating lunch,” Oak looked up at Nikita. She tilted her head to the side and then looked to the door. “Outside. Now.”
Carla stood up and turned to look at Oak. She didn’t know how he got continually under her skin, but he did. He had no idea how difficult it was to run a program for girls and how to balance fun with education. She would do anything to just have a cake-walk this summer and just take care of the horses.
The girls all made noise as Oak stood up and waited for Carla to walk. Nikita had made it to the door and actually did a loud, ear piercing whistle to get their attention to move outside. They both stepped around the table at the same time, ready to take the other one out for getting them into trouble.
Nikita held the door open and Oak looked at Nikita.
And she couldn’t even look him in his eye.
This meant big trouble.
