Michael held onto the clipboard as he walked out of the kitchen. It was amazing how quickly things started to become completed after Michael offered bonus money. The kitchen had no finishing touches completed, but the basics were in there. It could start to be used tomorrow if it was necessary.

The same thing could be said for the bedroom, bathroom and the office. There were still lots of work to be done in the living room, dining room, den, spare bedrooms, and the additional bathrooms. Michael turned to see Nikita walking up the temporary stairs to the porch that was barely even started. She pushed a shaky hand through her hair and looked up at Michael.

“How are you feeling, Kita?” Michael asked and Nikita tentatively looked around. “I’ve been better.”

“I stopped by to see you at lunch… you weren’t at Davenport’s,” Michael commented and Nikita nodded her head. “I went and talked to the girls…in groups…”

“Why?” Michael as he looked around and reached back to the banister to place the clipboard down.

“What I did yesterday was wrong and they needed to know that adults do wrong things and that it is important that we admit that we are wrong…” Nikita explained as she looked to the walls and blinked her eyes. The house was coming together quickly. “Keep you from having to do it.”

“I talked to Carla and Oak,” Michael spoke as he didn’t know what to tell Nikita about the girls. He hadn’t expected her to do what she had. He was glad that she had – but he didn’t expect it to happen at all. It would have probably been forgotten in a day or two either way.

“Together?” Nikita asked with a blink of her tired blue eyes. Michael shook his head from side to side. “No… separately. I had to clarify what had happened yesterday.”

“I should probably stay away from the camp… I don’t work for the camp…”

“Kita,” Michael spoke and he waited for his wife to look at him. She exhaled and looked at him. “I think in ways you cleared the air between them. And I backed up the decision on their punishment. It is a good idea to force them to work together on a project.”

Nikita stepped forward and Michael wrapped his arms around her. “How are you feeling?”

Nikita placed her head down on Michael’s shoulder and exhaled slowly. “I still have a headache… but I’m fine, Michael.”

“Is that all you are feeling?” Michael asked as he kissed her neck gently. Nikita pulled away slightly and kept her eyes down. She reached out for Michael’s hands and squeezed them.

When Michael squeezed her hands back, his firmness telling her physically that he was there, Nikita sighed sadly. “I feel stupid… for being so upset of not being pregnant… and stupid for thinking that it would just happen right away…”

Michael squeezed Nikita’s hands again before loosening his hands to tilt her head up to face him. He kissed her lips gently. “It will happen, Kita. When it is meant to happen.”

Nikita swallowed hard and looked to the side. “I worry… that it won’t…”

“That’s because you want it so badly,” Michael whispered again as he wrapped his arms around Nikita and held her tight. “One day at a time, ok?”

“Ok,” Nikita mustered out with a husky voice. Michael knew that this conversation could drag on in the same tone for too long if he didn’t change the focus. He stepped away and picked up the clipboard. “It looks like we could move in here… at least into some of the rooms.”

“No,” Nikita shook her head from side to side. “Nothing is painted… and I don’t want to get in the way.”

Michael watched as Nikita took the clipboard from his hand and started to walk around the space. She turned and tapped her finger on the clipboard. “We can’t live without a dining room and living room.”

“We are now,” Michael pointed out and Nikita narrowed her eyes. “It doesn’t make sense to start moving in now.”

“You haven’t made any decisions about décor yet, Kita. I thought that it meant that you just wanted to move in,” Michael commented gently as he walked into the living room space and knew that of work was needed in here. The fireplace needed to be finished, the molding wasn’t up yet, and light fixtures were hanging from above.

“I guess decorating is becoming among the things that I find hard to do these days,” Nikita rubbed her head with her hand. She handed the clipboard over to Michael. “Maybe you are right we should move in.”

“What else are you finding hard to do these days?” Michael asked and Nikita closed her eyes. She didn’t want to admit it at all but yet, she had left the opening. “Writing.”

“You finished the chapter for that book…” Michael commented as he thought about how Nikita whirled out the chapter for the book that Mick and Michelle wanted.

“I took a lot of what Mick had made as notes… and stuff from emails… it was very short and more about facts that I gathered from where we visited… It was real life and not made up…” Nikita explained as she turned and walked into the kitchen. She sighed as she touched the black granite countertops. “A study of black and white.”

“Until you figure out what you want… Or we find a decorator that you want to work with,” Michael suggested as he walked up beside Nikita. “I thought you and Mick were going to work on the house.”

“Mick got busy,” Nikita looked around and rubbed the back of her neck. She pushed away from the countertop. “I can’t think about this today.”

Michael nodded his head. This was probably too much for Nikita to handle today. He just hoped that she didn’t put it off too long.
