“I think the best part of the honeymoon was the one time when the bed kind of broke…” Michael stated as he sat next to Nikita in the mess hall as everyone was finishing up the dinner that had made for them with several cookies and possibly a cup of coffee.
“Not because of us…. We put the bag down on it and it broke,” Nikita explained while everyone was laughing at them. Nikita leaned into Michael’s arm, not really caring if anyone believed what they were saying.
Dinner was not for all of the staff. It was the select family, most of which who had helped out with painting the riding ring fence. Walter and Belinda handled all of the food. Michael, Nikita, Mick and Birkoff had got the silverware and plates out. Davenport, Kate, Trea and Oak had cleaned up the dishes while Madeline and Paul had come over along with Cozzie and Arcus. Jasmine, Gail and Carla didn’t help with setup but offered to stay afterwards and mop the mess hall floors. Helmut and Michelle were missing along with Will who was known to be visiting his parents Sheila and Thomas.
“Sounds like what happened in Amsterdam to Mick and myself,” Birkoff stated and Nikita rolled her eyes. “Please boys, I don’t need to learn about the details of what went on in Amsterdam.”
“I concur!” agreement rang from Cozzie, Arcus and Madeline. Paul pulled away. “Come on, Maddie… it could be fun to hear what happened…”
“Maybe it can wait until later,” Walter spoke as he exited the kitchen with his arm around Belinda. Belinda looked at Walter and swallowed. “We have something to talk to all of you about.”
The room fell quiet as they took in Walter and Belinda. The happiness that had been going around the room fell flat as everyone seemed to sense that something serious was going on. It had been in the back of their minds – Walter wasn’t one to do some extra cooking on the weekend without some reason.
Walter settled down with Belinda at a table and took her hands. “It’s not too bad, people…”
Belinda looked at Walter and blinked her eyes. She took a deep breath. “A week from next Monday… I’ll be going into the hospital for some surgery…”
The room was quiet at first as the announcement was sudden. On the surface, Belinda didn’t look ill at all.
“Have you been sick?” Madeline asked and Belinda shrugged her shoulders lightly. “It’s a woman thing… and it shouldn’t mean much more than taking it all out… that’s it.”
Nikita looked over to Davenport and grabbed Michael’s hands. She could tell from Davenport that Belinda was saying something very simple that didn’t quite fit. “Ah… How long are you going to be in the hospital?”
“The surgery will take anywhere between two to four hours…” Belinda explained as she looked around. She saw the question on everyone’s face and saw no reason not to admit what was going on. “I’m having a complete hysterectomy… I’ve been having some spotting and I stopped that part of my life many years ago…”
“How long?” Cozzie questioned and Belinda sighed. “I’ll probably be in the hospital until Friday.”
“I can help cook while Walter is out,” Cozzie immediately replied and Michael nodded his head in thanks. It was something that he was concerned about. Walter had plenty of staff, but Michael wasn’t sure if any of them really knew how to make a meal for the girls. Michael had no worries about Cozzie.
“Belinda doesn’t want me hovering around,” Walter spoke quickly as he looked at his wife and rolled his shoulders back. “But this is a good thing for her… it takes care of a problem and will show that she is healthy has a horse.”
“All of the tests have come back good… so it should be just the surgery and a month or six weeks to fully recover…” Belinda explained with a smile. She was holding onto the fact that everything had come back clean. “So… no worries about me… I just wanted everyone to know now…”
“What about the flower shop?” Madeline asked and Belinda nodded her head slightly. “I have interviewed a couple people… I’m going to start training a girl named Naomi Hill… I think she is going to be fine.”
For the next half hour, everyone stopped to offer Belinda and Walter any help that they wanted. Michael watched as Nikita put on a brave face but he eased her outside for a hug where Nikita was losing her control. “Kita… she is going to be fine.”
Nikita shrugged her shoulders as she just couldn’t speak. Michael sighed and held her tighter, knowing that Nikita knew that Belinda was going to be fine. Yet, he wasn’t sure all of what Nikita had experienced in her life. This could be something that she never really had to face. Michael didn’t feel that Nikita ever felt this close to her mother so when Roberta passed away it was more of a relief.
Belinda glanced out the window and felt Walter come up to her. “You know… it could be more, Walter.”
“And the blood tests are coming back clean, darling… you have to focus on that… the doctor said that those tests are over 90% correct,” Walter replied as he wrapped his arms around Belinda’s waist. “And the hardest part is going to be not being able to touch you…”
“I guess you want to make sure to have fun in the next week…” Belinda stated and Walter wiggled his eyebrows. “That has crossed my mind.”
