“I haven’t heard anything, Kita,” Michael spoke as he walked out of his office and into the lodge where Nikita was pacing about. She had wanted to go to the hospital to be with Walter, but Walter told her that he didn’t want that. He wanted to be alone in the hospital but had promised to call into Michael with updates.
Nikita nodded her head as she walked towards the door. “Lunch is going to start soon…”
“The girls don’t know what is going on,” Michael reminded Nikita and she again nodded her head up and down. “I know… but we should be there like always.”
Michael swung his arm around Nikita’s shoulder and pulled her towards his body. He paused and kissed her gently and then started to walk. “Things are going to be fine. Walter said that the surgery started almost two hours later than it was scheduled to start… so it just started, Kita.”
“I’m fine, Michael,” Nikita spoke as she took Michael’s hand and squeezed it. “We’ll go enjoy lunch with the girls and the rest of the camp.”
“I have my cell phone… Walter will call that,” Michael pointed out and Nikita shook her head slightly. “He won’t call when he knows lunch is going on.”
Michael was amazed with how well Nikita knew Walter. Walter had always been intelligent about Nikita, knowing things instinctively about Nikita without her ever telling him anything. But in ways, Nikita was the same way with Walter. Michael had realized that Walter wouldn’t call during lunch for the same reason, but that was because of the years that they had worked together. Nikita barely knew Walter for more than a year.
As they got closer, Nikita pulled away from Michael and then leaned her head backwards. She turned to face Michael. “Can you delay and entertain the girls for a while? Get lunch to start about fifteen minutes late?”
“Why?” Michael asked and Nikita glanced at the door to the back of the mess hall as it flung open and there was smoke coming from the kitchen. “I think they are going to need it.”
Nikita jogged towards the door. “Is everything ok in there?”
The woman looked up as she waved at the smoke that was coming out of the kitchen. “Who burns chili?”
“What?” Nikita asked and she rolled her eyes. “Stupid boy in there forgot to add water and broth to the chili… that was what was for lunch and now it is burned to a crisp!”
Nikita pushed her hair back and pulled it into a ponytail as the man that Nikita knew was Charlie shouted out. “Coming thru… coming thru…” He carried out a large saucepan that was normally full of chili when it was for lunch with two large oven mitts as it continued to smoke. He ran towards the hose and then started to douse it with water. “If you wouldn’t have forgotten the water, it wouldn’t have done that in the first place!”
Rolling her shoulders back, Nikita sighed. She thought for a moment and then remembered that this woman was named Ro. Nikita touched her arm and moved towards the door. “Ro, let’s get the fans on in the kitchen and see what we can pull together for lunch.”
“Charlie forgot to pick up food…. We hardly have anything,” Ro hissed as she waved at the air. Nikita stepped into the kitchen as it was still quite smoky, but not too bad. She moved over to the ventilation fans and turned them on high. Nikita turned around and found that there wasn’t a lot of food. “Ah… were you going to do garlic toast for the chili?”
“Yes,” Ro replied as she placed a hand on her hip. “Just as Walter outlined for the menu this week.”
Nikita turned to the bulletin board and groaned. She had tried to tell Walter to plan a few meals in case something went wrong. She had also thought that they should have taken everyone up on their offer to help out. Even Cozzie had offered to come in all week, but Walter said that his staff had it under control. But without the food being picked up and the chili being ruined, things were looking bleak.
Clapping her hands together, Nikita smiled. “I think going old school with some peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are the way to go… there doesn’t seem to be any peanut allergies this week.”
“It would be ok if Ro hadn’t made the chocolate peanut butter brownies for dessert tonight already,” Charlie declared as he came back into the kitchen, glaring at the woman. Nikita looked between the two and swallowed. Someone was going to have to moderate these two. “Do we have any peanut butter left?”
“Yes we do…” Ro answered.
“About maybe a bit over half of what we would need to do peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for everyone,” Charlie commented as he walked to the pantry and showed the jars. Nikita rubbed her head and then opened the refrigerator. She looked at the margarine and smiled. “Pull it out… we’ll mix it with the margarine… make it creamier… it will be special… and I’ll get a message out to the camp staff that we may need them to eat later… to get the girls served first.”
“You are going to have us stretch out the peanut butter with regular butter? That’s such a cheap move to do!” Ro complained. Nikita took a deep breath as she closed the refrigerator and walked towards the pantry. There were a slew of cans of chicken soup and stars in there. “Make the soup too… and we’ll make it up to the girls at dinner tonight.”
“We are to have pork chops and baked beans,” Charlie commented as he took the peanut butter over to the counter and pulled out the hand crank can opener. Nikita shook her head. “I don’t know how to make pork chops… and since you haven’t bought the food yet… we’ll make something I know how to make.”
“Why you?” Ro inquired and Nikita turned to look at Ro. She needed to get a message out to the camp staff and she couldn’t believe that Ro didn’t take the hint. “For now, consider me in charge.”
