Adam nodded his head up and down as he looked back across the stretch of woods and towards the cabin. Michael hesitated to nod his head up and down, but Adam tilted his head in frustration that he had not been given the go-ahead. Finally, Michael nodded his head, sending his son towards the front door.

Adam had gone over this with his father for years and he knew how important it was to run things exactly as mapped out. He knew that other children never would have to deal with this, but his father had protected the world from things that they did not need to know about. That made it fine for him to worry about his father because he was a hero that everyone needed but no one needed to know about.

Jumping up onto the porch, Adam knocked at the door loudly, knowing that his father was poised to take action if something against the plan would happen. Adam didn’t think that would occur. Someone wanted his father to be up here and there were plenty other ways to lure Michael into a trap if that was truly desired.

The door opened and a man with a tied-dyed blue and orange bandana stood there, cotton pants, a tan t-shirt and a leather vest. Adam smiled and stepped forward. “Uncle Walter!”

The man was stunned as he had his body surrounded by this young boy. As the boy was stepping away, realization of who was hugging him occurred. Instantly, Walter’s eyes were scanning the woods. “Adam… where is your father?”

“Worried,” Adam admitted and Walter turned and closed the door with a huff. “Michael Samuelle, get your butt to this porch right now! I’m not playing around here. We are safe!”

Michael stepped out of the woods, lowering the sniper rifle as he emerged from a spot that Adam had not left his father in. Adam tossed his arms up in the air with a shrug. “He isn’t armed, Dad.”

“Using your son for a pawn!” Walter exclaimed and Adam laughed. “I suggested it.”

“He did,” Michael spoke up as he placed the rifle down on the table that was on Walter’s porch and stood there. “You were the one that got passed my security.”

“I needed a challenge,” Walter shrugged his shoulders as he looked at Michael. He had aged some but not as much as Nikita had when he had last seen his Sugar. Walter felt his heart tug with the life that he missed. He never thought that he would wish for a time that he would have wanted Madeline and Paul to stay in power, but now, it would have been better. “You wouldn’t have come if I would have just simply called.”

“I didn’t know that retirement changed,” Michael coldly spoke and Walter nodded his head. “Things changed.”

“I’m gathering that,” Michael replied and Walter looked around and sighed. “Adam… there are two boys in the backyard named Rick and Jayden. They are playing some soccer… maybe you should go out there…”

“You want to talk to him alone,” Adam rolled his eyes as he looked at Walter and stopped. “I’ve heard a lot of good things about you. I never met you… but you do seem like someone who would be my uncle.”

“More like your grandfather,” Walter shook his head as he pushed at Adam’s back to tell the young boy to continue on. Michael stood there sizing Walter up and Walter looked to the table. “Want to pow-wow around the rifle? That’s the way we used to do it.”

“You came out unarmed,” Michael stated and Walter nodded his head up and down. “Things have changed.”

“They don’t change that much,” Michael declared and Walter sighed as he sat down. “I wish they hadn’t, Michael. Aren’t you going to ask about her?”

“I am thinking it isn’t a simple answer,” Michael responded as he turned and looked out towards the woods. He wasn’t sure what he wanted to know about Nikita. He wasn’t sure if he wanted to know what had happened. “Tell me why I shouldn’t gather Adam up and leave this… and leave that life.”

“Nikita,” Walter spoke the answer and Michael shuttered his eyes. Walter had him with just that one word. Michael turned and looked at Walter. “It feels like yesterday…”

“It wasn’t,” Walter rubbed his hands against the table as he picked up the rifle and shook his head. “This isn’t even loaded.”

“I had a feeling you weren’t dangerous,” Michael shrugged his shoulders. Walter placed it back down and looked at Michael. “I wrote the truth, Michael.”

Michael swallowed hard and he pulled a chair over and settled down across from Walter. “Tell me about how Nikita had our daughter first.”
