Walter shifted as he tried to relax. But it was impossible. This was a story that he hated to think about but to finally give it a vocal voice was a first time thing. He had never told a soul about what had happened and Nikita never wanted to talk about what had occurred. Walter swallowed hard as he looked at Michael. “I can only tell you about when I found out.”

“That’s fine,” Michael answered and Walter could see that Michael assumed that Nikita had used him as a confident, and while that had happened before Walter had gotten out, that was not the case at the beginning. Nikita would not use him in that manner while she was starting out in charge and getting her position in order.

“One day… I got called up by Nikita to the perch,” Walter began as he leaned forwarded and leaned his forearms on the table, looking at some spot far away, although it was like he could see everything happening in front of him like it was just the previous day. He was sure that he was starting to sweat with just the thoughts that had at times haunted his dreams. “Nikita had orchestrated and oversaw at least ten missions, all basically back to back.”

Michael frowned and Walter instantly noticed it. Michael had been under the rule of Paul and even when Michael had occasions of being in charge, he had never been put in the position that Nikita had been put in at that time. “Remember that a lot of key personnel were lost before you left… and you weren’t there as a primary Level Five operative that could be trusted… and Jason, he is good, but he wasn’t Birkoff and lacked some of the heart that we knew that Birkoff had. She was distant from me from day one… I was surprised that I had been called up to the perch.”

Michael’s eyes darkened and grew sad as the picture that Walter painted was so clear what kind of staffing situation Nikita was left with and how it would have been difficult even for Michael. “I was surprised to be called up there… and Nikita was sitting behind the desk, looking tired, not quite right, but composed.”

“When was this?” Michael asked and Walter shook his head back and forth. “Let me tell you this, Michael… I don’t like going through it in my mind… and I’ve never spoke about this to a soul.”

Michael leaned back and curtly nodded his head up and down.

“Nikita said immediately that the room was secure and that she needed my help. It was short and blunt. Once I confirmed to her that I would help her out, that I would always help her – Nikita announced that she was pregnant,” Walter explained and Michael exhaled slowly.

“I asked her who the father was,” Walter winced as he looked at Michael. Michael’s eyes flashed green and Walter lifted his hand up in the air. “It was seven months after you had left with Adam, Michael… I had seen Nikita numerous times although I hadn’t spent time with her. I assumed that she meant that she had just gotten pregnant. I wondered if it was a scheme for The Centre or just a mistake…”

Michael turned his head to the side as his eyes lost the anger to them and grew sad. He was realizing at that moment that Nikita had gone the balance of her pregnancy by keeping it to herself. He could see that someone as thin as Nikita was and as tall could possibly hide a pregnancy if she didn’t gain a lot of weight. The stress of being in charge of Section One probably made it easy for Nikita not to gain the weight.

“She didn’t even say your name. She glared at me and I snapped back that there was no way that it was your child…. She hadn’t left the walls of Section One from that day that she had walked back in. She hadn’t been in the sun and rarely ventured out from that small space that she had created… she wouldn’t even go into your office,” Walter’s voice cracked as he pulled away from the table and rubbed his hands together. He swallowed through a thickness in his throat and looked at Michael. “That was when she told me that her water had broken anywhere between sixteen to twelve hours before and that she felt that it was time to push.”

There was no way that even a man who had been trained as one of the coldest operatives around, could not be shocked by what Walter had said. Michael’s face had it written all the way across it. “How?”

“I don’t know,” Walter shook his head. “She had ran a mission no more than four hours previously… and she had been stood right beside Jason during that mission…. While she was in active labor.”

“So you took her to medical…” Michael stated wearily and Walter moved his head from side to side, although Walter knew that Michael had to realize that Nikita was not going to be one to go to medical for this. If she had hid the pregnancy all of that time, she wasn’t going to reveal it at that moment. “I got her to go to her private quarters… she even transferred her com calls and took a few in-between pushes… I was in another dimension… I was suddenly delivering this baby from my Sugar… your daughter.”

Michael blinked his eyes as Walter paused. The moments that should have been joyous had been tense and worrisome. But their daughter was the fighter that both Michael and Nikita were. “She was so small… but she cried… and she moved… and magically she was in my arms with your dark hair and Nikita’s blue eyes…”

Michael swallowed back what Walter had to believe were tears. Walter knew that he had some on his own face. Walter stood up and stretched his back out. “Sugar held her for five minutes…. She then sat up and handed her back to me and informed me that I had to get her out of Section One immediately. That no one could know about the child.”

It was painful to hear and Michael had a hard time imagining that the woman that had stolen his heart years ago could have been so cold about their own child. But Michael knew the reality that Nikita was in and knew that she had no option. It was the only way to protect their daughter. “How?”

“Nikita actually got up… and somehow ran interference so I could slip out undetected…. And I met up with a contact who was to take her and make sure that she was taken care of based off of Nikita’s directions.”

“A contact? Nikita’s directions? Why are you leaving out details, Walter?” Michael challenged and Walter sat back down with a very heavy sigh. “It’s hard… I worry that my decision not to do something before I passed your daughter over…. I could have done something more…. Fixed the situation… but I knew that Nikita was right…”

“Who was the contact?” Michael instantly asked and Walter chewed on his lip. Michael was plotting how to start looking for his daughter and Walter winced. “Ah…well… there is a story there.”

“The name of the contact.”

“He has decided to continue to go by the name of Mick Schtoppel,” Walter whispered as he closed his eyes. There was not a sound and Walter slowly opened his eyes to look at Michael. Michael was glaring at him. “That man was killed.”

“I don’t know how, Michael… but even though he was an actor paid to be Mr. Jones who was pretending to be Mick Schtoppel… his death was staged… Nikita knew this. She had told me this maybe four months earlier. I look back and know that she had to have told me back then because she knew that she was going to ask me to give your baby to Mick Schtoppel,” Walter tried to explain as best as he could. It had taken Walter a couple months after the birth of the baby to figure out all the things that Nikita had put into place for the birth to occur as it had.

Michael rubbed his neck as he shook his head. He realized how hard it could be to track a person who was supposed to be dead many times over and one who had obviously played many roles. Just because he was using the name of Mick Schtoppel once more when Walter gave the baby to him, doesn’t mean that he continued to use the name.

“I haven’t seen him since that night. I haven’t heard of him either,” Walter declared and Michael counted to five silently in his head. “My daughter is living with Mick Schtoppel?”

“No,” Walter shook his head from side to side. “Nikita’s instructions were that Mick was to go to the United States to one of the state where it was not illegal for a baby to be dropped off at a hospital, church or police station. It should make the focus for the mother to be a teenager and not someone like Nikita. She had told Mick it had to be a church…. And that he had to send her one picture via some email account that she said would only accept one email… and the picture had to show the baby on a pew with a current USA Today.”

Michael allowed the air to escape from his chest with a hiss. Nikita had made it possible to know that her daughter had been left as desired, but also made it so no one could find out a hint at the location of where the daughter had been left.

The two men sat in silence and Walter stood up. “We should get some coffee for you.”

“Why?” Michael asked as he looked at Walter.

“You are going to ask me the next question… about how I got out,” Walter calmly spoke as he opened the door. “That’s a longer story and I should feed the boys and Adam first before we start down that road.”
