The number on the screen was impossibly large. Michael had always had the knack to find people by finding the one distinctive thing that narrowed down the field, but with Nikita, although he knew every little part of her, there was nothing that Michael could think about that would make her different enough from the millions of women who were blonde and blue eyed.

Knowing that he had work that he had to get done, Michael turned off that screen and went back to the computers that he used for work. He had to lose himself in the work and do the things that he could control and manage.

After the stories that Walter had weaved started to really sink into Michael as being what Walter knew to happen, Michael gave himself a break on Sunday and Monday. He even took Adam to the zoo on Sunday to just do something away from the house. Being with Adam made the thoughts of Nikita and his daughter get pushed to the back of his mind for several hours. He enjoyed his time with his son. He loved the way that Adam loved the glass in area around the polar bears that allowed them to come up right in front of him and Adam could press his hand against the glass. It was thoughts like those that allowed Michael to turn his attention back to work.

School was not to start for another week and Michael had been relieved when Adam had gone out to the park with the next door neighbor for some swimming. He was going to have to remember that next weekend was Labor Day and that Adam went back to school. It would be a relief for Michael to have Adam back at school. It was always easier to work while Adam was in school. But Michael found that he often would forget about lunch when Adam was in school, so it was a double edge sword for Michael.

But today, there was a slam of the door that broke Michael from the fourth report that he was submitting to various locations. He had turned off his phone, wanting to find a way to lower his case load. It was good that he was good, but the cases just kept coming in and Michael refused to bring in further help to assist him in his work. He had to lower the cases that came in and right now that was simply being done by not answering the phone.

“Adam?” Michael called out as he pushed away from his desk after he had saved the report. He heard the cupboards slamming around in the kitchen and Michael pushed his way out of the lab area, which at one point had been a garage, and entered into the main house to find Adam slamming another cupboard. “I had the kitchen remodeled two years ago… I can’t afford to replace the cupboards because you are trying to break them.”

Adam turned and glared at his father. He turned and yanked the refrigerator open. He groaned and pushed it shut. “All we have is healthy crap.”

Michael picked up an apple from the dish on the counter and tossed it to Adam. “Casserole is in the oven…. It’s tortilla casserole… Have an apple.”

“Maybe I’m not hungry,” Adam placed the apple down on the counter and trudged out of the kitchen. Michael took the apple and followed after his son. “Did something happen at the park?”

“The angel is gone,” Adam declared as he just fell back onto the couch with a frown on his face. Michael rubbed is forehead. ‘What?”

“Where was she today? Some kid got hit by a car…. Shouldn’t she have been there?” Adam hissed as he crosses his arms along his chest with a huff. Michael sat down in his chair with a heavy sigh. “This is why I told you that the media shouldn’t have done this, Adam. There is no angel.”

“She has to be out there! She has done so much good… but it is like she disappeared. Does she not care?” Adam fired back and Michael leaned forward as he looked at the apple and Adam’s eyes narrowed. Adam was not going to take this apple right now and Michael sighed. “Adam, a good Samaritan is not an angel. Maybe she went on vacation. Maybe she went to some other place that needed more help….”

“You are happy,” Adam shouted as he pointed at his father. With young age, Adam leapt up to his feet and raced down the hallway to his bedroom to slam the door the point that it felt like the whole house shook. Michael took a bite of the apple and gazed down the hallway. Adam wanted him to follow and Michael wasn’t going to give his son exactly what he wanted right now.

Five minutes later as Michael was about half the way done with the apple, Adam stormed out of his room and tossed papers at his father. “She should have been there too!”

Michael looked at the anger in Adam’s eyes as he picked up the papers and sighed. A bank had been robbed. “Adam… if this person exists…”

“The angel has done good… that is the bank that was taking donations for the kids with cancer, Dad!” Adam huffed. Michael shook his head slightly but that movement was enough for his son to see that Michael did not agree with him. He rushed back into his room to only return with more print outs. “Yesterday she didn’t help the family that was carjacked…. The son was in the car and ended up in another state before the police could end it…”

“And the son is fine,” Michael commented but he only got the papers thrown in his face from his son. Michael exhaled as he counted silently in his head so he didn’t react to Adam’s frustration with anger. It would only make the situation worse. It was best to just let Adam get this out of his system.

“How about the military van that got tagged by graffiti artists?” Adam questioned as he put the other papers down and tore the paper in half. “They don’t matter….they are military. The angel probably thought that they are good enough to watch out for themselves.”

“Adam…” Michael warned as his words did not stop his son. Adam pulled up another paper and tore it in half. “It doesn’t matter about the woman who was assaulted on Friday night… and tied up with duct tape… she doesn’t matter. She must have done something wrong since the angel is gone… and the threats being made to a school already in session… the angel doesn’t have to worry about kids or anything like that!”

Michael stood up and took the rest of the papers out of Adam’s hands and firmly pushed his son’s shoulders so Adam toppled onto the sofa. “I don’t think this is just about the angel not being around, Adam.”

“It is!”

“It is about how you think that in a previous life I would have done something,” Michael pointed out as he placed the papers on the coffee table and looked at his son. Adam was clenching his jaw and he turned his head away. “I could have done something, Dad.”

“You are a boy,” Michael reminded right away, knowing that one of his biggest fears in teaching the things that he had taught Adam would end up with Adam doing something unnecessary or dangerous. “I’m a scientist now… you know that I operate off of facts. Tell me the facts…”

“The angel missed all of this!” Adam fired out and Michael exhaled slowly as he tilted his head to the side. He waited as Adam processes his silent reminder to Adam about what he needed to do. Adam huffed, “She is real, Dad! She has to be real! We need her to be real!”

“Why?” Michael questioned and Adam pulled his body deep into the couch and Michael shook his head. “No, Adam…. The angel isn’t going to do that.”

“I didn’t say anything,” Adam rasped as he rubbed at his nose, but Michael knew that his son was wiping away tears. Michael walked to the couch and sat down next to his son. “She isn’t going to bring Nikita to us. You do understand that right. There are no facts that support that there is this super-hero angel out there to protect this area from all the bad things that can happen…. Because even with a super- hero and even with angels… bad things happen, Adam. You know this, right?”

Adam slowly nodded his head up and down. He parted his lips to protest, but Michael shook his head. He wrapped his son up in his arms and held him. “I work on facts, Adam…. That’s where to start…. Nothing that I have seen indicates that all of the things that have happened can be contributed to one angel.”

“You haven’t been asked to help,” Adam pointed out and Michael nodded his head. “You are correct on that.”

Adam looked at the papers and looked at his dad. “What if you find facts on Nikita? Are you going to go after her?”

Michael closed his eyes and Adam’s hand touched his cheek. “I want you to go to her, Dad.”

Taking his son’s hand off of his cheek, Michael looked at him. He was too old for his age. “I’ll make that decision if I ever have anything to work off of. But you have to let me work on this myself. I don’t want you involved.”

Adam nodded his head as he took the papers and looked at his father. “And I am going to continue to believe in this angel…. She exists, dad.”

Michael groaned as Adam slipped out of the room and back into his bedroom. He had a growing headache and he wasn’t sure what he could do right now.
