Michael pushed away from the table and shook his head. He had been working hard on this case for a family in Florida and he had thought he had been on a lead to only find that it didn’t work out. Days had passed with him simply focused on this case and getting Adam ready for school. Michael wanted to just focus on this case on the first day of school and he had believed that he would get a breakthrough. That hope was now dashed and he did not want to report back to the investigator who was the middle person between Michael and the family that he was no closer to an answer.
Knowing that the disappointment could color the other case that he thought he would work on today, Michael turned away from the work station and moved to the personal computer in the lab and opened up the news paper website. But what he saw on the front of the website was not a welcomed sight.
Acts of Mercy – Angel at Work Overnight with Four Good Deeds
After calming Adam down last week, Michael thought that the disappearance of this angel was a good thing. Instead, the media had found a way to bring her back. Michael wanted to call the police and offer to assist them in solving this, but he also wondered if some of this was work by the police to make some good press for bad things.
He hesitated on calling because he was sure that his overflowing voicemail box probably included calls from the police on other cases that they either had Michael working on or cases that they wanted him to help with. Lately he had been forwarded a lot of cold cases that the cold case squad just could not follow up on. Turning his attention back to the screen, he wanted to see what this angel supposively saved the area from this time.
One home invasion, one drug overdose, one suicide and the identification of a skeleton that had been found in a construction site three years ago.
Michael instantly zoomed into that paragraph because that was something that he had been working on and had not found any way to identify the body. Michael slapped his hand against the table as he saw that the identification was that of a teenager who had disappeared around ten years ago. He had thought that but had not found the small screw in the ankle that had led the angel into figuring it out. Michael huffed as he had not had access to the bones yet and he wanted to know how the angel had done this.
There was a knock at the lab door and Michael stood up. He opened it to find Nancy standing there with her hands full. “Mr. Pomeroy…. Your mail for the lab is overflowing…”
Michael stepped forward to take the first half of the envelopes out of her hand and Nancy held onto the box at the bottom. Michael looked but did not say anything as he turned and placed the envelopes on the table that he used to process mail. It was full and that was simply because he had been ignoring things that he did not already have open by design. “Thank you, Nancy.”
“This was delivered by hand,” Nancy pushed the box forward. Michael looked at her and she tilted her head to the side. “He was a nice man… said to make sure that you personally got this. Today.”
Michael looked at the handwriting on the box and groaned. “You may want to stay away from Walter. He is a player.”
“No,” Nancy shook her head from side to side. “He was dressed in a perfectly fine suit… but his gray hair… that ponytail… I think you have some stories, Mr. Pomeroy. I didn’t believe you had friends.”
“He is from another time in my life,” Michael took possession of the box and sighed. “Is it almost time for Adam to come home?”
“Yes,” Nancy nodded her head up and down. “And the news is all over the place about the Angel… I’m sorry to let you know this.”
Michael had informed Nancy about Adam’s fascination in the angel, especially after Adam’s explosion about her disappearing. “I don’t believe it is one person.”
“You are about the conspiracy theories,” Nancy shrugged her shoulders. Michael could tell now that Nancy would rather believe like Adam did. Michael placed the box down and rubbed his neck with his hands. “Anything that I should know before you leave?”
“Chili is in a Crockpot on the counter. It will be done just before six… you only have to make the instant rice,” Nancy explained and Michael nodded his head. “Thank you, Nancy.”
“I made it for Adam’s first day of school. Special request,” Nancy tossed a hand in the air as she turned to close the house up before leaving for the day. Michael was left with the mail and more importantly, the box. Michael had managed to compartmentalize his thoughts and emotions about Nikita to the night so he could functionally work but Walter’s visited smashed that hold.
Spearing the box with his scissors not carefully at all, Michael opened it and found a cell phone along with a letter. Michael had no doubt that the cell phone called Walter directly, not that Michael needed a cell phone as he already had Walter’s phone number. He took the letter and opened it up.
Friends call friends. Lovers search for each other.
Michael tossed the empty box to the side. He was not going to do anything based off of Walter’s schedule. He wasn’t ready to deal with any of this. He wasn’t sure what was going to happen if he continued down this path. He had thought about Nikita every day since he left her that fateful day, but it never hurt as much as it had since Walter sent that first letter.
Adam was a thriving young man who had to live with knowing things that he shouldn’t have to know. Michael worked as a forensic scientist for hire because it kept him home, watching over Adam, and gave him some way to make up for the things that he was involved with – in ways, making up for the sins that he had committed against people, particularly Nikita.
Fighting the onslaught of tears, Michael opened up his drawer and placed the phone inside of it. He locked it up tight and sat back down in front of his screen to only see the article about the angel on it again.
Michael had to wonder if Adam in his mind had thought that this angel was Nikita. Adam could be a romantic in that way and he just wanted to see his father happy. The only reprieve during the past few weeks was that Adam wasn’t trying to hook him up with various single mothers who were suddenly divorced and finding Michael prime material for a second husband.
“Dad,” Adam’s voice called out and Michael shook his thoughts from his head and turned off the computer screen. Knowing that it was best to meet Adam before he got to the lab, Michael exited and walked into the kitchen. “How was school today?”
“Here is some man at the door… has a badge,” Adam spoke as he looked slightly over his shoulder. Michael patted Adam’s shoulder as he passed him. “There is some trail mix in the pantry… you can have that for snack before you start working on homework.”
Michael walked to the door and blinked his eyes. “Nathaniel McCarty. I’ve told you that I only visit with investigators on a scheduled basis and never in my home.”
“You haven’t been answering your phone… your email… You have barely left the house,” Nat stated as he shoved his hands into his pockets. “But I’m not here on official department work… I need a favor for someone that I know.”
“I’m far behind with too many cases.”
“I guess the angel can help you out,” Nat cracked a half smile and then dropped it when Michael did not return his smile. Nat thought he had a good relationship with Michael Pomeroy as he was often the one that the department used to communicate with the eccentric contracted expert. “Ah…. I guess you don’t believe its one person.”
“Facts don’t support that. It doesn’t even support that the angel is a female,” Michael retorted as he shook his head back and forth. “I don’t have time for favors, Lieutenant….”
Michael closed the door and locked it. He felt bad for doing this, but he was afraid that he was going to fall apart at any moment and no one needed to see that.
