Rhoda stepped into the church and stopped as the door shut loudly. Mary was standing right at the doorway, her hand on the frame. She was frozen and Rhoda could see that she did not even seem to care that someone walked up behind her. Rhoda waited a long time and only watched Mary breathe in and out slowly.

“Mary… is something wrong?” Rhoda questioned as she stepped along side of her. Mary didn’t look towards her. She continued to stare into the church. But slightly, Mary’s hand dropped down the frame. Rhoda stepped closer and touched the arm that was closest to her and away from the door frame. “You can come inside the church, Mary.”

Mary jerked away and turned her head. Her blue eyes looked so dull and lifeless. Her lips were chapped and she looked so very tired. Rhoda didn’t know how else she could help Mary and she hoped that this was the opening that would start the healing. “Mary?”

With a turn of her head away, Mary stepped backwards and away from the church. “Not Mary.”

Rhoda turned as Mary stood there after speaking. “I know that your name isn’t Mary… but we have to call you something. Unless you can share with me your name.”

But it was as if the question was causing Mary to shrink inside of herself more as she slightly moved her head negatively from side to side. She moved further away from the church and looked straight at Rhoda once more. “Not Mary.”

Just with one moment, Mary was gone and heading off towards her room. Rhoda hadn’t seen her in a couple days and had heard from several other Sisters that she had arrived back early this morning and had helped out with the breakfast preparations although no one had seen her eat. Rhoda was so afraid that a hospital was not far away for Mary at this point if it continued like this.

It was for this and for the reason that Mary finally indicated that Mary was not truly her name, Rhoda followed behind the woman. She found that Mary had left her door open while she kicked off her shoes.

With no regard to those around, Mary pulled off her pants and then pulled off her long sleeve shirt, showing bruises that ran down her arms and her sides. Rhoda gasped and shook her head as she entered the room and closed the door. “Mary, what happened to you?”

Mary did not stop her movement. She stood there at the dresser and pulled out some new clothes and then unsnapped her bra, as if she was unaware that Rhoda was there. She was changing into the clothes and then sat down on the bed. Rhoda stepped in front of her and rolled up the long sleeve shirt that Mary had selected, although it was warm enough in the convent today to wear something much shorter. “Mary, what happened to you?”

Her eyes were lifeless and dull. There wasn’t a response. Rhoda touched the bruise but there did not seem to be a pain response. Rhoda looked at her and groaned. “Are you hurt?”

Mary lifted her head and looked at Rhoda with a wary eye. “I’m fine.”

There was no way that Mary was fine, but that was what Rhoda was going to get at this time. For some reason Mary did not believe that she deserved anything else in her life and this broke Rhoda’s heart. She stood up and nodded her head up and down. “I know that you think that you are fine, Mary. But we both know that you aren’t. I’m here if you are ever ready to talk about it.”

She did not expect a response. She knew that Mary probably said her fill of words for a week in that small span of time. Rhoda knew that lingering would not help either. She stepped out into the hallway and closed the door. She prayed that for now that Mary would stay in the convent and not disappear.

Returning to her office, Rhoda pulled up her phone and was frustrated when she just got the Lieutenant’s voicemail message. She had gotten the bad news that his contact had indicated that he was not taking other cases right now. Rhoda knew that this expert had to help her out because it may be the one thing that would help Mary.

“Nat, it’s Sister Rhoda. I want the name and address of this so called expert. I want to talk to him and explain to him how important it is for him to take this case. Call me back immediately and let me handle this.”
