“I apologize,” Nat spoke as he walked beside Michael as he was heading towards a book store to get a book for Adam. Michael turned his head away from the Lieutenant and stopped on a dime to enter the store. Nat skidded pass the entrance and found Michael shutting the door firmly behind him as he went into the store.

Nat had a couple different options and going into that store was not one of them. He knew that instinctively that it would make Michael Pomeroy nervous and more upset. Instead Nat stood outside the store with the hope that Michael would leave from the front door and not sneak out the back.

Nat regretted the way that he attempted to approach Michael previously. He knew better and now his ill-timed move threatened to ruin the one thing that kept him very valuable to the police department – his ability to communicate with this forensic scientist. This meeting was not about the favor that Sister Rhoda needed. He had been avoiding her calls for now as he had to deal with other things.

Finally after some amount of time, Michael stepped out of the bookstore and stopped to glare at Nat. “You don’t give up.”

“It’s an important case… cases…” Nat explained as he matched the intensity of Michael’s stare back. Michael stepped to the side and for one moment, Nat was sure that he was gone. But the hard look started to falter and he sighed. “Let’s get some coffee.”

Nat didn’t jump for joy, but his mind was jumping. He was relieved that he did not need to grovel too badly in front of Michael to get his attention again. Nat shoved his hands casually in his pockets as Michael moved to the corner diner and stepped in. Michael nodded his head at the waitress and spoke simply, “The usual.”

Nat watched as Michael eased into a booth and the waitress winked at him. Nat smiled at her. “What is his normal?”

“Coffee, black,” the waitress deadpanned and Nat had a feeling that Michael had done this to other people before. This waitress was having too much joy in giving him this answer. “I’ll have the same.”

“I’ll make sure to bring the creamer over, darling,” she winked at Nat as she turned her back on Nat. Nat sat down across from Michael and tapped his hands on the table as Michael was reading the back cover of a book. Nat took the menu out of its spot and flipped through it as Michael continued to read. Finally, Michael put the book done and looked at Nat. “Why aren’t you explaining?”

Nat was on edge and was interrupted with the arrival of the coffee, creamer with his on the side. Nat rolled his head back slightly and then waited for the waitress to leave. “I’m sure that you have heard about the angel.”

“Damn it,” Michael muttered as he shook his head. “Not you too.”

“Me too?”

“Adam is completely sold on this media story…. And I just don’t see how it is feasible that it is one person and I think the media is making it into one person and now more people are feeding off of it… and it’s not a woman…” Michael outlined quickly with sarcasm dripping from each word. Nat hesitated as it was clear that Michael Pomeroy had clear opinions on the angel. But Nat shifted and leaned forward. “We have some idea which acts are the angel and which ones aren’t. There is always a blank prayer card left on the ones that we know are all together… and they are the majority of what has been reported on television. We haven’t released the information about the cards.”

“I can run the cards,” Michael offered and Nat nodded his head. “We were hoping for that… but we have something more.”

“More?” Michael asked and Nat leaned forward even as he continued to swirl the creamer into his coffee. “Blood.”

Michael, who had been sipping at his coffee, placed it down and cleared his throat. “Are you sure that it is the angel? I thought angels didn’t have blood.”

“It proves that the angel is a human… and we know that it’s a female,” Nat explained as he pulled his spoon out of the coffee and finally took a sip. He realized that Michael was intent on him and he took a moment to swallow the coffee before continuing. “Doesn’t match any of our databases.”

“But you are hoping…” Michael drifted off as Nat simply nodded his head. “The angel is getting more risky with what is being done to take these people down…. And while we appreciate it, we worry about her safety. It’s time for us to protect her as she has protected us.”

Michael rubbed his forehead and drummed his thumb against the coffee cup. “I’m going out of town this weekend with Adam for a small trip… How much of a sample?”

“Very small… but we found it at two of the scenes… we know that they match. But there isn’t much left,” Nat explained and Michael nodded his head. He didn’t expect there to be much left to test. “I need all of the results. I also need to see the card.”

“There are no prints on them,” Nat countered and Michael rolled his eyes. “Are you questioning what I can and cannot do?”

“No,” Nat lifted his hands in surrender right away. “We are just going to be in great debt if you can help us.”

“This angel could be off the grid…. We may not find her,” Michael warned as he picked up his coffee and took another sip. Nat exhaled and nodded his head. “We got to try.”

“She is making your whole department look bad,” Michael quipped and Nat knew that Michael spoke the truth.

The two men drank their coffee quietly and Nat leaned back when done. “About the other day…”

“I don’t want to talk about it,” Michael interrupted as he took the book and stood up. He was out of the diner after leaving a huge tip on the table. Nat rubbed his hands through his hair and pulled out his cell phone. His boss would be happy.

Rhoda would not.
