“Why are we just coming right up the drive?” Adam asked as he saw Walter’s place coming into focus and in fast. “Shouldn’t we be taking a tactical approach?”

“He is expecting us,” Michael dryly state to his son, hurt that his son had used the phrase tactical approach. It made Michael worry that Adam knew too much and that telling him more would just make Adam older than he needed to be. But Michael was in a position of no return. If he did not address things right now, Adam could get in deeper and not know what was happening.

Getting out of the car, Walter stepped out of the cabin and waved. “You’re late. I expected you two yesterday!”

Michael looked at Adam and half smiled to show that he had been correct. Adam was smart but he had to learn that Michael knew more. Michael walked up the stairs as Adam lagged behind. “Adam started school and I wouldn’t pull him out on a school day for this.”

“This is finding your soul mate! This is finding your daughter!” Adam protested and Walter nodded his head. “I forgot that school started… school is right… but the boy has a point, Michael.”

“Don’t,” Michael warned and Walter chuckled at the intensity in Michael’s eyes. Even after all of those years of being outside of Section One, Michael’s eyes still got as serious and directive as ever. Walter knew that some things never changed but in some ways he had hoped that this would have changed. “Come inside…”

“Why inside?” Adam protested as he walked into the house. “We should be out there – hitting the streets – finding Nikita.”

Michael rubbed his forehead as they eased into the casual living room. Michael sat and exhaled. Walter was finding Adam so amusing. Walter remembered how Michael was when he was a recruit and Adam acted a lot like Michael did then. Walter also understood why this could cause Michael, the father, many worries. Michael didn’t want his son to deal with things that he had lived through. “Walter… do you remember Jameson?”

Adam huffed as he sat down, defeated that they weren’t going to talk about Nikita and how to find her.

Walter swallowed hard as he had not thought about Jameson in a long time. “He was in your recruiting group… I wanted him to come into mutations… he was skilled in that area…”

“Adam,” Michael spoke as he turned towards his son. “I’ve always told you the truth… but there are different levels of truth… and I fear that I may have sugar coated some aspects of Section… and you need to know the truth.”

“Section was bad. Section tried to break you and Nikita up. Section killed people. Yeah, they are dangerous,” Adam sarcastically stated and Walter even winced. The casual way that Adam spoke did scare Walter.

“Adam…”

“You got out, Dad.”

“People don’t get out… usually…” Michael turned to look at Walter. “We’ll get into what changed, Walter… but I think I need to be truthful and tell Adam about what happened to Jameson.”

“It’s a clear example,” Walter agreed with a nod of his head. “Jameson was a good man, Adam. A bit older than your father is now… but had a great mind….”

Adam blinked his eyes as he looked at his father, knowing that they were talking about a man who had passed away. Adam knew that people got killed at Section One during all kinds of missions. It was part of the things that had to happen to make sure that the world was protected.

“Jameson got put into Cold Ops… he was good… he had a good sense of the missions at all times and he could be counted on to do the work… not a leader… but I worked with him a lot,” Michael’s voice grew thick as he exhaled. “I was so young… I was cocky and he saved me a couple times from doing stupid things…”

“You were a hot head a couple times. I remember you telling at Madeline once after the one mission… you were so green when you started…” Walter commented as he shook his head. “You needed what happened to Jameson to become who you are now.”

Michael winced and looked at Adam. Adam wouldn’t be here if Michael hadn’t learned how Section was. Michael learned that by what they did to Jameson. “At times Section liked to test us… not just to see if we were loyal, but at times it was like they just wanted to see our reaction… like lab rats…”

“Like when they brainwashed Nikita,” Adam stated and Michael swallowed with those painful memories hitting him instantly. He had failed Nikita back then by not knowing sooner. “I never did tell you Adam…. They knew when they were brainwashing Nikita with that machine… they were brainwashing her to be the assassin… I didn’t find that out right away… but Madeline knew… and it was a test of me being Nikita’s mentor along with testing Nikita. They wanted to see that I had control over Nikita – no matter what.”

“I didn’t know that you found that,” Walter whispered and Michael jerked his head up and down. “I got that information when Adrian was in play.”

“Jameson?” Adam impatiently spoke and Michael shook his head slightly. He could think about Nikita all day if he was allowed too. Michael sat back in the couch. “They decided to play with Jameson… assigned an operative from Medical to seduce him… it was a romance…”

“But they didn’t allow that…”

“Shades of gray,” Walter sighed. “If the powers that be wanted to see the romance, it was allowed. It was always calculated to see if it would better results or hinder results, Adam. Even romances that weren’t sanctioned… like when your father fell for Michael… it was always calculated… and manipulated when they needed certain results.”

Michael glared at Walter and cleared his throat. “Jameson didn’t do anything else wrong… but he wrote about just his relationship with the medical operative in a diary… nothing that would identify Section… nothing… but during a routine sweep of his residence…”

“Sweep?” Adam questioned and Michael hissed as he exhaled. “They had operatives who had the task of coming into our known residences and ensure that nothing could damage Section… sometimes they planted monitoring devices… and when you first were an operative you were videoed in your own residences full time…”

“You didn’t tell him that?” Walter questioned as he shook his head. “How could you have told the story of you and Nikita without mentioning all of that?”

“He didn’t ask,” Michael replied sternly. It had always been Michael’s policy. He would not like to Adam, but he also would not just give information if not asked about it.

After a pause, Michael went back to the story about Jameson. “Written materials of any course were not allowed… and they found the diary…. And it was hidden…. And they decided that Jameson was a liability that had to be eliminated.”

Adam shivered and Michael turned to stare at Walter. “First they took him into this room… it was white… and he was in there for days… just because he wrote love poetry about this woman that they wanted him to get with… and they had operatives who had special training on interrogations… and they did awful things of torture…”

“This is scaring me,” Adam admitted and Michael looked at his son. “Section wasn’t heroes… we weren’t the Justice League, Adam. I’m sorry if you ever got that opinion…. They did good things…. They also did bad things.”

Walter leaned forward and waited as Michael composed himself. “Being sent to the White Room didn’t always mean that you were going to be cancelled… but you got beaten up some from the interrogation methods…. I’ve been through them… your father was subject to them… brutal, Adam.”

“Jameson was allowed out. He thought that he was safe and not in trouble. His love nursed him back to health and he was sent out on another mission about three days later,” Michael jerked and rubbed his hands together.

“The mission was meant to go bad,” Walter stated and Michael jumped to face Adam. “They called it a suicide mission, Adam. It was known exactly who was to die in those missions… only a small percentage of them got around the suicide part of the mission…”

“You and Nikita did that a couple times,” Walter quipped ad Michael nodded his head as he took Adam’s hand. “I’m not the hero you have made me on that pedestal, Adam. I was assigned on that mission to lock the doors after the operatives went in…. I told Jameson that I had his back and as I saw him go down the hallway…. I put the lock on the door and armed it with extra explosives…. Making sure that no one came back out of that building.”

Walter waited as the silence was needed. He saw tears on both Michael’s face and his son’s face. “If your father hadn’t done that Adam… the next suicide mission, it would have been your father locked inside…. That was what Section did.”

“And sometimes there was no reason for the person to be inside with no way out… “ Michael rubbed his hands along his legs. “You need to know that this is the world that Nikita was running, Adam. Looking for Nikita…. It’s absolutely dangerous.”

Walter winced as he knew that he had even forgotten about how dangerous this could be. “Michael… things changed…”

“You think,” Michael declared and Walter groaned. “I know! Nikita made it happen.”

“That isn’t going to help right now…”

“Your son needs to know the facts before you ask him if it is worth the risk to look for Nikita… because I know that is what you are going to ask him…. So let me tell him the rest,” Walter fired out and Michael shook his head until Adam touched his father’s hand. “You always said to listen to both sides, Dad.”
