“Your father has the right to be cautious, Adam,” Walter started as he looked at Michael and knew that Michael was in a hard place. “He went through a lot with Section and he saw the very ugly underbelly of Section more often that most of us ever saw it.”
Michael seemed to squirm and Walter turned his attention directly to Adam. “And I apologize to you Adam for letting you think that it was good for you to look for Nikita. I thought that your father would have started the search already and I was getting frustrated because I got scared about Nikita.”
“He has always missed her and this is the chance,” Adam spoke as he glanced at his father and then back to Walter.
“Section was getting better… That was because Nikita was in control and because the world was changing. Nikita had to have a hand in what happened to those of us that were inside of Section. They could have just… eliminated all of us…” Walter’s voice grew thick with emotions. He never thought that he would be allowed to just leave Section One, but Nikita had made that happen for him. But it was also so painful, knowing that he was leaving behind the one person who absolutely shouldn’t have been there to start with.
“Nikita got the people out who were innocent… or at least wouldn’t cause more harm to the world,” Walter explained quickly as he looked at Adam. “But once I left… I don’t know what happened… and Nikita does have people out there in the world that could be looking for her also.”
“As do I,” Michael pointed out firmly.
“But we don’t know what happened to her… I know where you are and I know that you are safe,” Walter turned his attention to Michael. This wasn’t about Adam in any way. Michael was too afraid to start looking for Nikita and was trying to make this about Adam making decisions that were too risky for his age. But in the end, Adam was only doing such things because he wanted to help his father.
“Nikita did the impossible and got me out to be with Adam. She would hate me if Adam’s life was ever risked because I started to look for her,” Michael declared firmly as he fired back to Walter. It was finally out there and Walter wasn’t sure if he had a way to combat what Michael had said. Nikita did care about children so much and it was true that she had given up her welfare for Michael to be a father to Adam.
The tension grew in the room as no one wanted to say anything more. Walter was now at war over what he knew Nikita would want versus what Nikita needed.
“Then we plan on how I stay safe,” Adam finally broke the silence as he move forward to the edge of his seat. “We come up with perimeters of when I have to take evasive moves… and we come up with simulations of what I do in different situations…”
“Sounds like you raised a pretty darn good operative, Michael,” Walter stated and Michael stared at Walter coldly. Walter knew that Michael didn’t want to raise an operative, but it was damn smart of Michael to give Adam these skills.
“We should have three exit plans… and maybe even an extraction plan if I need Walter to come and get me out… and if there are more of your friends on the outside… we should try to use them too… give me a playbook of plans…. And then go search for Nikita,” Adam outlined his plan.
Michael swallowed hard as he looked at Adam. “I’m to be there for you, son. I won’t be an absentee father to you. I don’t know where this search may take me…”
“To her,” Adam replied back gently.
Michael looked away and continued to slightly shake his head back and forth. Adam had a reasonable plan of action and that scared Michael.
“How about we work on the first exit plan this weekend, Michael?” Walter suggested as he could see how difficult this was for Michael. Maybe he had been thinking too much about what he needed over what Michael needed when it came to looking for Nikita. “It is going to take us this weekend just to figure out what things would mean that there is something going wrong…. And then you can think about that plan for the week… and we can then work on the second plan next weekend.”
Slowly, Michael turned his head and started to nod it. “I can support that plan.”
“Thanks!” Adam jumped to his feet and hugged his father. Michael held onto Adam and felt the tears. It was a risk that Michael wouldn’t get to do this again if he started to look for Nikita. No one knew who had taken out Section One in the end. Nikita may not even be alive. Michael could lose his life trying to just find out what happened. He could lose his son. This hug meant so much.
It also meant a point in Adam’s life that said that he was no longer a child and he was a man. It was Adam’s suggestion that brought them to this resolution that Michael could not find fault with. Having a plan and know what that plan was would mean it would allow Michael to look for Nikita without all the worries that he would have without the plan.
But it didn’t make it any easier hugging Adam.
