Sitting up in bed with a cold sweat, Michael knew that he had somehow come across that strand of DNA that was Mary’s somewhere. He didn’t know where and it was the thing that kept him up and now woke up him from his restless sleep. Michael had many cases that unnerved him when he was not able to solve it, but never to this extent.
Taking a shaky long breath, Michael rolled his head clockwise, at first trying to rid the color stripe of DNA that he had seen come across the screen of his computer, the chart of specific chromosomes that could identify this person, although not found in any known database at this point.
Michael did not turn on his light at this early morning hour. Fighting the thoughts were not working so he had to find a way to trigger knowing where he knew that he had seen that DNA before. He slowly inhaled and exhaled as he closed his eyes, guiding him into the process of trying to figure it out.
The DNA strand was on a screen. It looked like his but Michael exhaled slowly and could see that the font was just a bit different. He had to pull away from that image in his mind and see what was around that could identify where he had seen it before. It was difficult as there was noise, but nothing specific. It was like piped in white noise, but not piped in white noise. It was clear that around him it was hectic and busy.
Michael groaned as his head throbbed with the desire to figure this out. He gave himself a moment to rub his forehead, but knew that his headache would not go away until he figured out what nagged him to the core.
There was a distinct beep that was happening in a periodic and measured manner. He forced his mind to pull away from the DNA stand and realized that the beep was in time of a heartbeat. That narrowed down the places that it could be, but brought on another chill.
Michael shifted on the bed and swallowed back his next initial reaction – Section One. The fact was, he had been in many hospitals since he left Section as part of his work.
He couldn’t seem to pull his thoughts back more. He was looking right at the screen but nothing gave any indication of where that screen was. There was no hospital logo. There was no patient information. Almost feeling as if the image was not going to give him the answer, Michael wanted to try to pull back from the thought of the strand. If he could just force his mind to step away from the screen, but it wasn’t happening. The noise was starting to grow again and then his mind remembered the detail that confirmed where Michael had to look.
“Michael, Operations wants you to debrief,” Birkoff spoke from behind him. His mind whipped away from the screen and to where Birkoff stood.
To his feet, Michael felt the cold chill still covering his body as he pulled on his jeans and pulled a black t-shirt over his head. He was out of his bedroom even while the shirt was settling over his body. He dashed down the stairs and into the lab, typing in the password to the computer. In ways Michael was sure that he hadn’t even breathed while rushing down here.
He gave up on recovering details from his memories for the moment. It had been a long time since he had hacked into information from Section, but this time he had to get to the information. It was about a year ago that Michael was sure that someone had disappeared due to a terrorist that he had crossed paths with while working on a mission for Section One in Mexico. Michael had gotten access to the files with lots of work but he learned the path quickly.
As his fingers started to work out of routine, things were going quickly until one simple message appeared.
This resource does not exist.
Michael frowned and tried the routine again. He couldn’t get access and Michael frowned. He backed up slight in the process and tried to hit the information in a more public manner. But the message appeared again.
This resource does not exist.
Michael pounded at the keys over and over again and even tried a dramatic and pronounce attempt and found the same message.
This resource does not exist.
Slamming his hands to the keyboard, Michael didn’t like what he saw. He knew what Walter had said – Section One was gone. But in all of the plans that Michael had ever been privy too, and plans that he was not supposed to have found, the information that Section One gathered was to forever be maintained, no matter what happened to Section One. There were so many backups to the backups that it was not plausible that all of the information just vanished – but it had.
Michael yanked the phone up and dialed without care of what time it was. This was important. He needed to follow through with this information and immediately. It could not wait. He had a ghost of an idea that someone from Section was involved and it bothered him.
“Michael?” Walter questioned with a husky voice that indicated that Michael had woke him up. But there was no guilt on Michael’s part. “The Section databases are gone.”
“Ah… I told you that Section is gone,” Walter stammered as he stopped and cleared his throat. Michael could tell at that moment that Walter had turned to look at a clock. “Damn it, Michael… its 3:16 in the morning. What the hell are you doing?”
“Who still has copies of the information that was inside of Section?” Michael questioned as he did not want to wait.
“Ah… Michael, we’ve been over this. Section is gone.”
“The databases were to be protected,” Michael started to type again, trying to hit mirror sites that had simply vanished also.
“That was before you left… things changed once those other organizations gone involved,” Walter answered as he was waking up quickly.
“Then who has a copy of the information,” Michael stated and Walter knew that it was not a question at all.
“I may know…”
“Get Jason on the phone right now. I’ll stay on this line. You patch us into a conference call immediately,” Michael directed firmly as he continued to try to find a way to something that gave him just some access to what he needed. He just needed DNA records to run his sample again. That was all that he needed.
“It’s 3 am, Michael!” Walter protested, albeit weakly. “Can you tell me what this is about?”
“Make the call,” Michael hissed and Michael heard the click of the phone and he waited. Once there was no dial tone it was clear that Walter had placed him on hold and he was doing as Michael wanted him to do. Michael was impatient. He did not want to wait. He needed the information and he needed it now.
Walter had Jason on speed dial and he knew damn well that Jason had a copy of the information. When Jason had gotten out, Nikita had a special package waiting for him and it was an unlinked version of the databases that Section One and other Sections had. He could run information from those databases without being hooked into Section’s mainframe. It was a risky move but once Walter had heard about what Nikita had done, he was almost sure that Nikita had done it for a reason.
“Walter! Long time since I have heard from you… I just got in from the bar…” Jason declared and Walter rolled his eyes. “You were hacking as Birkoff tonight. You probably have a legit job to ethically hack tonight…. But I need you to stop that right now.”
There was a pause and then a chuckle. “I should know you better by now, Walter. What can I do for you?”
“Michael needs access to Section information,” Walter replied as he did not wait and he connected Jason into the party phone call. “Michael, Jason is on the phone line.”
“When will I have access?” Michael questioned without even saying hello. That was absolutely classic Michael and it did not bother Walter at all. In fact, that was the kind of reaction he had been craving to get from Michael all along.
“You’ll see your cursor moving right now, Michael. I’ll drive you to my information,” Jason brightly declared as Michael saw his cursor move as Jason had said he was doing. “You bugged my system.”
“Once I got out it was one of the first things I did. I knew that you would have found good access to systems and I wasn’t disappointed,” Jason wisely admitted to his activities right away as he worked away to open up a screen and then waited. “This information is not necessarily up to date, Michael. It was a snapshot in time.”
“I don’t need current information,” Michael grabbed his mouse and started to go through the familiar system, drilling into the search engine and copying over the information that he had from the DNA sample and then started the search.
“You are searching DNA?” Walter questioned and Michael groaned. “I don’t really want to have visitors on this search Jason. I’m fine now. Can you and Walter disconnect?”
“Gads, Michael. You act like you are working a classified-need-to-know operation… I’m just happy to see this information being used. When Nikita gave it to me, I was scared to have it but once I found that Section disappeared, I wasn’t sure I would ever need it again,” Jason retorted quickly as the search worked. “This is going to take time to process, Michael. I don’t have the resources needed to do this quickly.”
“I’ll wait,” Michael declared as he pulled his hands away from the keyboard. If Michael could find any other information in his memory, he could make the search more specific. Michael blocked out the talking of Walter and Jason on the phone as he forced his mind back to that memory of the DNA strand.
The beep was steady. The strand was colorfully on the monitor. Now that Michael knew that this was in Section One, he knew that this was probably in MedLab. He could then start to identify some of the smells of disinfectant in the air and the noise in the background was a busy medical staff due to a mission that had a high causality list, but operatives who were needed and therefore getting treatment.
He could hear the footfalls behind him and knew that Birkoff was about to tell him that it was time for a debrief. He needed to find the detail in the memory that he was forgetting. The detail that might make the search unnecessary.
“Michael, Operations wants you to debrief,” Birkoff spoke firmly. Michael forced his mind to work in slow motion as he turned to look at Birkoff. As his eyes turned, he caught a glimpse of the bed, which was holding a woman. Michael froze as he could zoom into the detail of who was in the medical bed that was attached to the screen. His heart started to quickly pound as the answer screamed at him.
“I need you both to just let me do this search…” Michael warned as he rubbed at the sweat that was on his forehead. His knew what was going to come up on the search but it was too late as the beep occurred at the same time as the picture and the name came up at the same.
