Michael opened the door and extended his hand out with the cup of coffee. Lieutenant McCarty took the cup and waited outside. It was still early and it was clear that Nat had not gotten a lot of sleep at all. “I assume your son is still asleep and we should talk out here.”

Michael stepped out and nodded his head. Adam had about one more hour of sleep before getting ready for school. Michael knew that he had called the Lieutenant early, but a lot of things did not matter right now. Michael needed information and he was going to find it easier to extract from the Lieutenant opposed to the Reverend Mother.

“Tell me more about Mary,” Michael stated as he kept the front door open a crack as he stepped out onto the porch. He did not carry a coffee for himself because his stomach was sour and churning as a result of all the happenings in the past few hours.

“You mean the woman that Sister Rhoda has at the convent?” Nat inquired as he was momentarily confused. “She isn’t going by the name Mary now.”

“She isn’t?” Michael inquired and Nat nodded his head. “Rhoda wanted me to talk to her… I think she wanted to truly see if she was afraid of men… she said that her name was not Mary.”

“Did she say what her name was?”

“Is this connected to a case?” Nat asked as he peered over his coffee cup to the mysterious Michael Pomeroy. He knew that Michael was eccentric, but this was still out of character for the forensic expert.

“I’m looking into it for the Reverend Mother but I need some other opinions… Did she give you her name?” Michael explained as he then asked the question again. He was almost sure that Mary had not given the name that Michael knew to be here name. It would have stuck out too much and she was hurting. But Michael needed to know. He had thoughts that it may have been one of the numerous names that they used in a cover story over the years.

“I know that it isn’t her name. But she said the name Joe,” Nat shrugged his shoulders and then took a sip of coffee.

Michael knew that he was smiling. Nikita had told Nat to call her Joe.

Josephine

“If you want me to tell you what she has said to me… I could probably count the words on my fingers, Michael,” Nat spoke as he did not notice Michael’s reaction at all. He was tired, he needed more coffee and he had no idea that Michael was more than interested in Joe.

“Do you have any idea why she isn’t talking?” Michael inquired although he had his own ideas.

“Oh, she is hiding from something,” Nat declared as he placed his coffee down. “It isn’t that she is just staying in the convent. But you can tell that she doesn’t rest properly, probably suffering from some sort of night disturbances…”

“That’s a fancy term for nightmares,” Michael retorted and Nat shrugged his shoulders. “I’m conjecturing right now so I’ll just say its night disturbances…. And I would say that she is trying to make sure that she does not look her age… she is younger than what one would think when you first see her… but something tells me that she is eerily smart and sharp…”

Michael rubbed his hands together as he looked out to the sky that was starting to lighten up. “Sister Rhoda mentioned some bruises…”

“That’s what she wanted me to try to find out. Rhoda thought maybe I would get something more… I got that Joe felt that she was fine,” Nat shrugged his shoulders as he picked up the coffee and took another sip.

Michael shuttered his eyes for a moment. He knew exactly what Nikita had answered with. He had said it millions of times to Nikita himself. She had even complained about that phrase millions of times. ”I’m fine.

Michael could even hear her voice saying it as he knew that Nikita had said those words. It also indicated that after years of trying to help Nikita to learn how to compartmentalize that she had now succeeded in doing it to the extreme. That scared Michael. Big time.

“Is this why you wanted to know more about the angel cases?” Nat inquired as he rubbed his forehead. He felt like he was missing something here and he did not understand how Michael Pomeroy’s mind could jump from one case to another.

“Do you think that Joe has anything to do with the angel?” Michael questioned as he had to wonder what the officer thought right now.

“Joe? If anything, I wouldn’t be surprised if the angel was going to have to save Joe some day. Rhoda goes nuts when Joe disappears for days… she worries that she isn’t going to see Joe again. In ways, Joe acts like that outdoor cat that doesn’t really want to have a home, but needs to have that place for when food is scarce… shows up for a few days and then wanders off to return on her own schedule without regard if others are worried,” Nat complained and Michael realized something else.

Nat was in love with the Reverend Mother.

“She wanders away? Does she just sleep at the convent?” Michael asked and Nat shook his head. “The woman can clean.”

Michael almost sputtered in laughter but then stopped. He had to wonder if cleaning was a close relative to redecorating an apartment.

There was a noise from inside the house and Michael glanced at his watch. It was still way too early for Adam to be up due to the alarm. This probably meant that Adam had been up and spying on his father for some time now. Michael did not want Adam to know what was going on. He would become too difficult to manage and Michael was going to have his hands full for a while.

“Is that your son?” Nat glanced to the door and Michael turned to see his guilty son standing at the crack of the door. “Adam, it’s too early to be up for school.”

“What are you doing out here, dad?” Adam asked as he tried to pretend that he was innocent. Michael tilted his head. “How long have you been spying on me?”

“You were in the lab a bit ago… you never work in the lab like that,” Adam stood there and Michael swallowed. He had never outright lied to Adam. He did not tell Adam the full truth to the extent of the reality that things were, but he never just lied to his son.

“I had some projects I was in the middle of running that I couldn’t stop working on,” Michael explained as he knew that he was really stretching the truth with that statement.

“And I needed to give your father some more information,” Nat informed the boy that was not buying one word that his father had said.

“I’m going to study for my test a bit more… I have to get my grade back up,” Adam turned and walked away. Michael looked at Nat and rolled his eyes. “He is a great boy… but too smart.”

“He thinks you were up to something else… and I think there is something else going on here,” Nat shook his head as he stood up. “I have to run by the hospital as the angel took care of a crooked nurse a couple hours ago… I need to get witness statements but no one will have seen anything.”

Michael nodded his head and watched as Nat walked off the porch. Nat stopped and tilted his head to the side. “You don’t think that Joe is the angel, do you?”

“No,” Michael answered with the truth.

He knew that Nikita was the angel.
