“How has it been all these years of being a dad?” Davenport asked as he sat on the front porch with Michael hours later. They were waiting for Adam to come home. It was important for Adam to meet Davenport so he was going to stay for dinner, get some supplies, and he was going to try to establish surveillance on Nikita this evening. He was going to work with a private investigator that Davenport had started to work for once he got out of Section.
“I felt lost at first,” Michael admitted as he leaned forward. “I had to walk away from the woman that I love and leave her in a place that I knew could destroy her forever… and I had a son who was confused.”
“Man,” Davenport shook his head from side to side. “And Adam is ok now?”
“I told him the truth,” Michael rasped as he looked over his shoulder and paused. “Well… it had been a watered down version of the truth until recently… and somehow I gave him skills that I’m scared about.”
“He is snooping on you, huh?” Davenport chuckled as he looked around and sighed. “I have known where were…”
“How?” Michael asked and Davenport looked up and then back to Michael. “She told me when she met me on the outside.”
Michael didn’t understand it. Nikita had given Jason a copy of the Section databases that held information about identifying her. Nikita had told Davenport where to find Michael. It was like she had predicted that this all was going to happen in this way. But there was no way that Nikita could have known that she was going to be in this state.
“I didn’t know where Walter or Jason were,” Davenport pointed out as he leaned back and looked around the house. “I almost came and crashed in your house that first night…”
“You were afraid I would shoot you.”
“Or run… or shoot me and run,” Davenport smiled as he looked towards the street as some of the school children were walking from school. “Instead I went to the other side of town and met Erma…. Such an old sounding name, but an amazing young woman… I didn’t go home with her that night… but a couple months later I had moved in with her and her eight year old boy… he is going to turn ten in a couple weeks.”
“A stepfather?”
“We aren’t married yet,” Davenport retorted as he shook his head back and forth. He rolled his shoulders back and looked at Michael. “But yet… it’s kind of great.”
Gazing back to the street, Davenport knew which boy was Adam without him looking towards the house or without Michael pointing him out. “Damn, he looks a lot like you, Michael.”
“And oddly, he does things that reminds me of Nikita,” Michael rasped as he stood up just as Adam turned his head to see that his father was on the porch with a man that he didn’t know. Adam did not stop walking, but he did take in the man who was standing next to his father.
“Adam, I want you to meet my friend Davenport,” Michael spoke as he saw that his son was unsure what to make of what was going on. Davenport extended his hand. “You can call me Chris.”
“I’ll call you Davenport,” Adam shook the man’s hand and he turned towards his father. “You said that he was bald.”
Davenport chuckled and nodded his head. “I was back then. It was easier to be bald than to face other missions that I didn’t want to be involved with. But my girlfriend likes the long hair.”
Michael shook his head slightly. Davenport didn’t just grow his hair a little bit like Jason did. He grew it a lot. Michael wasn’t sure how it grew that quickly, but it was half way down Davenport’s back and it was jet black. But Michael also knew that this small interlude was just a bit of respite before the hard part had to happen.
“Davenport is going to be working on something more me… and something that I have to talk to you about,” Michael said as he turned and opened the door. Adam stepped in. “Is Walter here?”
“No,” Michael shook his head from side to side. Michael thought this would be so much easier with Walter around. Adam did respect that man and Michael wanted to build off of that. Walter told Michael that Adam could probably too easily manipulate him into going to Nikita and he couldn’t allow Adam to have that opportunity.
“But if we are working on Plan B, Walter needs to be here,” Adam protested as he dropped his book bag down and looked at Michael. Davenport entered and closed the door while looking at Michael. When Michael said that Adam reminded him of Nikita, Davenport couldn’t see how. Now he could see just a bit in his personality, which meant that Michael had to have given that to him.
“It’s not about Plan B,” Michael said as he pointed to the couch. Adam groaned and fell to the couch. “I did well on my tests, Dad!”
Michael sat down and started to rub his hands. He could still hear Adam talking and protesting. He found it so hard to start talking. It was right there. In fact, Michael in ways wanted to shout it out loud in excitement. She was alive and Michael wished that he could celebrate that. The reality of not knowing what had happened to the vibrant woman that had stayed vibrant even with all that Section had done to her over the years scared him. But Michael had to tell Adam.
“I found Nikita,” Michael said as he lifted his head and looked at Adam. Adam was mid-sentence and he stopped. “What?”
“I found Nikita,” Michael confirmed as he looked at his son. Adam could sense that it wasn’t time to jump up and down in excitement. “Is she…” Adam asked as he was concerned that she had not made it.
“She is alive,” Michael revealed quickly because he did not want Adam to think the worse. “But things aren’t easy, Adam. Something isn’t right and Davenport is going to be going to watch her for a while… try to get some more information.
“Intel,” Adam stated and Davenport nodded his head up and down. “Your father just wants to make sure that Nikita isn’t in the middle of doing a mission or something like that Adam. We wouldn’t want to ruin something that she has planned.”
“Section is gone,” Adam spoke and Davenport looked at Michael. Rubbing his hands together, Davenport looked directly at Adam. “It may be gone physically, Adam. But for me, Section is still there. It will never fully be gone. In the back of my mind, my training is still there. I can spend time with my girlfriend’s son, but I can’t fully just give into the moment. My mind still subconsciously knows the routes of escape, where danger may be… Section isn’t gone for me. I doubt that it is gone for your father. And I think Nikita might really still be stuck there.”
Michael blinked back his emotions with what Davenport had said. He had said it so elegantly to his son. It was exactly what Michael had been trying to explain, but hadn’t found the words.
“Dad?” Adam’s voice trembled. Michael looked at him and slightly nodded his head. “I do my best, son. You help out a lot….”
“When you get back with Nikita… it will be gone then,” Adam declared and Michael shuttered his eyes.
He could only hope.
