“Ah… let’s wait on waking her,” Michael whispered into Sabina’s ear as he barely wrapped his arms around his squirming daughter just before she opened the bedroom door to wake up her mother on Christmas morning. She laughed as she turned in his arms. “But dad… Santa has been here.”

He knew that she was mocking him with that tone and he placed her down on the ground while he leaned against the wall to lower himself closer to Sabina, but without giving her the opportunity to bust thru that door. The baby had been active a lot last night and Nikita had just fallen asleep.

“Sabina,” Michael sighed as he looked at her and felt some of the sadness that he didn’t want to admit to Nikita that she had felt when she realized that Sabina didn’t believe in Santa any longer. There was a magic that Sabina didn’t get a chance to have because she wasn’t with them. She lost that innocence that they had only got a glimpse of when she first came to them and things like the Wii and the computers just were so outside the realm of what she expected. It had been a lot like the magic that a parent wanted to give their children when they believed in Santa. It had passed so quickly because of her intelligence and because of circumstance.
With a sigh, Sabina almost sat down on the floor. “I’m still excited to get my gifts.”

Michael closed his eyes and Sabina reached out and tugged her father’s hand. “And I want to see mom get the gift I got her. I want you to see it too.”

This was not what he had expected to hear.

“Maybe mom would like to have breakfast in bed,” Adam spoke from his doorway as he rubbed his eyes. He had been out late last night with Cinda’s family. He had tried to get home as early as he could as he knew that Nikita would not allow Michael to put the gifts under the tree until he was upstairs in his bedroom. But Cinda’s family didn’t start dinner into later and he strangled in while Nikita napped on Michael’s lap on the couch.

“Before we open gifts?” Sabina asked as if Adam had grown a second head.

“It would be a great gift for your mother and the baby,” Michael picked up immediately on the opening that Adam gave him. It wouldn’t be much time, but at least Michael could wake Nikita up and not because Sabina jumped onto the bed.

“We could make omelets… you know that Nikita likes them a lot,” Adam rubbed his eyes a bit as he exited his room and pulled the door shut.

“I miss French toast.”

Michael smiled. “We all do… just a few more weeks…” Michael knew that Nikita had gotten sick of eggs there for a while. To the point that she had been eating cold pizza for breakfast a couple mornings because she couldn’t even think of eating eggs either.

“Walter got us some of that really good cheese and some bacon… I think we put that in the omelet with some veggies… how does that sound?” Adam questioned as he ushered Sabina down the hallway. He looked back at his father to warn him that this was only going to buy him a little bit.

Michael slipped the door open and caught the whites of Nikita’s eyes looking at him. “You didn’t need to do that.”

“Kita… you need your rest,” Michael pointed out as he slipped onto the bed and rubbed his hand across Nikita’s stomach while placing a kiss on her lips. “Merry Christmas…. Mrs. Samuelle.”

Nikita grinned happily as she didn’t get to hear that enough since they couldn’t use it. But she knew that was who she was in her heart. She stroked Michael’s face and swallowed. “I knew that I would be tired last night when… I made the decision…”

Michael was conflicted by last night. “Keane wouldn’t approve.”

“He didn’t say that it would be dangerous for the baby, Michael,” Nikita pointed out as she stretched slightly and smiled. “And even though I’m tired… I needed that… it was the Christmas gift that I needed.”

Nikita thought back to the evening and knew that it was tenderer than it was hot, but she needed to feel Michael like that and she cherished every moment. It was loving and moving, it had nothing to do with sex, but with love.

“But the baby protested,” Michael pointed out as he eased his hand across her stomach and kissed it. Nikita ran her fingers into Michael’s hair and made him look at her. “Cooking will only keep Sabina satisfied for a little bit… I have to get moving.”

“It can be breakfast in bed,” Michael pointed out and Nikita moaned with a twinge of pain down her back while she moved. “Think about what you are saying, Michael.”

Michael looked at the sheet that covered his wife and licked his lips. He wished that the kids weren’t around. He wished that he wasn’t worried about the baby that Nikita was carrying. He feared that what Nikita had orchestrated last night was because she was more concerned about his needs than what she said she needed. But he had been careful to not strain Nikita at all, even while she tried to tease him into doing more.

“I can change the sheets while you are in the bathroom…” Michael relented as he knew that it wasn’t wise to have Sabina in there right now.

“You know that it is best for me to eat while sitting straight up. I suggest the kitchen will be best so I don’t get heartburn,” Nikita teased her husband as she pulled the sheets with her. Michael laughed. “Kita… you are being modest.”

Nikita looked at her stomach and then at Michael. Today might be the first day that she just outright felt huge. She loved how Michael had always showed reverence to her body as it curved with their child growing within her, but today she just felt big and slow and absolutely not-sexy. She held the sheets and continued to move. “Keep our daughter busy, Michael…”

Michael watched as the bathroom door closed and he heard the water starting to run. He wanted to go into the bathroom with his wife, but he heard a commotion downstairs and he sighed.

Duty called.
