The blue SUV with a 13.1 bummer sticker on it that sat unmoving in front of him almost brought forth a grunt that hadn’t been made in some time, months actually. The fact that there seemed to be an infinite line of traffic heading into the city that he had no plans on going into still didn’t bring out that verbal sound of frustration, although it was yelling inside of his head. I

Rush hour was so foreign and it was something that hadn’t bothered him until right now.

Slapping at the radio to turn off the droning morning show off, Walter turned his head to look out the window of his own SUV, a used Ford Explorer with well over 120,000 miles. He could have had any vehicle. He could have gotten a bike, but he got this one, although he was aware that it did have many characteristics that matched mission vans.

When he was first released from Section One, there wasn’t a minute that went by that Walter didn’t think about Section One. For weeks he looked over his shoulder, completely positive that it was all his imagination or worse, it was a setup to get him to retirement while providing the trainees a way to test their new skills out trying to eliminate him. Worse yet, except for a cryptic message from Michael saying that he would be in touch, it was radio silence.

Then the thoughts started to weaken, but he still thought about Section often, but not usually about specific people.

Until Michael called and directed him to come to this hospital.

Michael had been there in the front of the room after two weeks of sheer chaos erupted in Section One with Operations disappearing and Madeline vanishing. But Michael had barely introduced this man known as Mr. Jones to everyone before he slipped out of the room. It was clear to Walter that Michael had a major role in whatever had happened to cause the group of them to be released, but Walter wondered if that release included Michael.

Nikita would have never believed it, Walter thought with a pang in his heart. She hadn’t been in Section One long enough to make an impact, but Walter probably thought about his Sugar more now that he was out of Section than after that bomb took her from being an Abeyance operative into being a dead operative. Nikita would always be one of the rare operatives that Walter spent time with that was truly a person that he would have wanted to be a friend with outside of Section. She had a good heart. While she doubted Michael, as did Walter, Michael had proven himself in the end.

“He did good, Sugar,” Walter murmured as he glanced up to the roof of the SUV and then back to the road as the traffic continued to inch forward.

There were some worries about doing what Michael had directed, but Michael hadn’t led him wrong. Plus, if Michael wanted him, he could have gone by the house that Walter was at, which had no fancy security system on it out in the suburbs and taken care of the situation. There was a tone in Michael’s voice, even after months of not hearing it that seemed to be a mixture of stress and tiredness. Although the words were directive, they were also said in a way that almost sounded like Michael was asking for help.

If Michael not only got Walter out, but many others out of Section One, then Walter had to at least see what this was all about. He had a sense that this was about the bigger picture, but Walter wasn’t sure what that bigger picture was at the moment.

Time inched on as it often did. Walter filled most of his days in front of the television or tinkering in the garage on one of his neighbor’s lawn mowers or even a car or two. There was a teenager named Derrick he was helping to fix up a VW Bug about once a week, but otherwise there was nothing really pressing on Walter’s schedule.

As Walter finally made the entrance to the tunnel, he was brought back to thinking about Nikita. His sweet girl had that chemistry with Michael that was almost like star-crossed lovers. It was there but in one of the blessing in disguise, Nikita was eliminated before Section One could have manipulated that glimmer of connection between trainer and trainee. They would have paired them up over and over again to be a couple. And who knows what Madeline would have schemed up when Elena and Adam came into play. It also would have caused her lots of anxiety for the amount of times that Michael was off-grid and not in contact with Section One as part of a mission, weeks going by without any contact from him.

It was probably for the best for Nikita, but it didn’t mean that Walter didn’t miss her as fiercely now as he did back then. Only know he was allowed to feel those emotions more and didn’t have to hide them.

Once thru the tunnel, traffic opened up and Walter was soon pulling into the parking garage, his mind starting to question what he was doing here as Michael had directed. Walter pulled into the parking spot and turned the SUV off. Taking a deep breath he started to wonder if he would even leave the vehicle or if he would run.
