“I don’t believe I’ve ever had Michael leave the room while I perform the physical therapy,” the therapist spoke as she eased Nikita’s leg back down to the bed. “He has been dedicated.”

Walter swallowed and nodded his head. He had heard this from all of the staff that had been in and out of this room, even when Michael had them bring in another bed in case Walter wanted to have somewhere while they waited. “So… you’ve been assigned to Nikita from the beginning?”

“Me?” The woman shook her head from side to side. “There was Jack… but Michael didn’t think that he was being serious enough… which can be hard when you see patients like Nikita… because she is the exception… I wasn’t here when Nikita came here…”

“Michael headhunted you,” Walter stated and the woman nodded her head slightly. “He called me and as soon as he said ‘Amy Kandala, I’ve heard that you are the best therapist for individuals with traumatic brain injury and I want to hire you personally,’ I had a sense that this man was different.”

Walter smirked as it did sound like Michael, with a few more words that Walter was used to when Michael was giving directions. But he was a complicated man that Walter was learning more about in just less than 18 hours. “And you came?”

“I talked to Jack first… but Michael was insistent that Nikita was not brain dead… and I could hear it in his voice… and some of the nurses I know here that worked in the ICU said that they didn’t understand why, but they felt it too… despite the science at first,” Amy explained as she lifted Nikita’s leg. “I came over for a trial... and I could tell from moving Nikita… it felt like… Michael was right.”

“That was all?”

“Michael can be insistent,” Amy pointed out with a smile as she gazed at Nikita. “He always could tell when she was going to show a sign of coming out of it… he told us that she was going to start grasping fingers about four days before we saw it… and when he said that she was going to start recognizing his voice by moving her head… I didn’t doubt it at that point.”

Walter leaned against the glass wall and looked at Nikita. “It wasn’t just a head injury….”

“No,” Amy swung her head from side to side. “And while the bones look like they healed… until she wakes up and starts using them, with weight… we won’t really know… and I know that Michael thinks she is going to wake up soon… I warn him that it can be very very hard. She might not be like herself.”

Walter had that conversation over and over again, even with Michael in the room. When they were alone, Michael said that he was just afraid that Nikita would never remember or would come back and think that this was part of Section. Walter was there for Nikita, but also for the safety of the staff, people like Amy.

Walter cleared his throat. “So, who takes care of Nikita when you are off?”

Amy laughed. “I’m not off.”

“Michael makes you work every day?”

“I offered,” Amy admitted as she shrugged her shoulders. “And I was hired specifically for Nikita… so for a while she was my only patient until I talked Michael into learning enough to handle her evening exercises…”

That did sound like Michael.

“It will be soon,” Amy spoke as she settled the leg back down. “I can feel some resistance when I’m doing these exercises… I can feel that it is her mind starting to fire the connections again… “

Walter wasn’t sure what he thought about that. He didn’t know what Nikita had been up to since she was supposed to have died. Michael had not spoken a lot about the time that she had been cancelled and Walter needed to find out. Other than learning that something happened in Lyons, Walter was in the dark of how long Michael knew where Nikita was and how she truly become this outside operative that Walter was sure had to exist in order to bring an end to Madeline and Operations – let alone all of Section One.

“You aren’t upset that he didn’t call you sooner?” Amy inquired as she pulled the sheet back up over Nikita’s legs. Walter paused and thought about it.

Michael was right in not telling him that Nikita was alive. He would have been too big of a risk and would have slipped somehow, probably with the desire to see his Sugar again. While he was upset that he didn’t understand why Michael disappeared while he was learning that he was no longer considered Section One material, Walter had thought that Michael had been forced into another agency – like the CIA, NSA, or something just as secret as Section One.

“Not at all,” Walter sighed as he walked back to the bed. “She wouldn’t have wanted me to be around all the time… Michael did seem to know… they had a connection I really didn’t understand… but it is clear that it worked.”

Amy started to pack up her things and Walter shifted. “So… if Nikita gets better… what happens to you?”

“The hospital has extended me an offer… I’ll have more exhaustive duties…”

“Above that Jack?” Walter questioned with a raised eyebrow and he knew the answer as soon as Amy laughed. “I wouldn’t necessarily say that… but sort of.”

That was a sign that Michael was involved in that.

The door opened and Amy grinned. “Hello, Michael. It was nice to meet your friend, Walter.”

“It is good to have him around now,” Michael replied with a gentle voice as he walked immediately over to Nikita’s side. “How did she do?”

“Perfectly fine… I think she seemed more relaxed… perhaps because she heard Walter talking with me.”

“I hope that he wasn’t talking your ear off,” Michael commented without looking away from Nikita. Walter rolled his eyes as Amy laughed. “It was different having someone talk to me… while I always believe in talking with Nikita; it was nice to have a discussion.”

Michael looked back at Amy and tilted his head forward slightly. “Thank you, Amy.”

“I’ll see you tomorrow. Unless you need me this evening.”

“I’m fine.”
