Dr. Carle walked into the room and looked at Michael wringing his hands. “We’ve discussed this possibility, Michael.”

Michael didn’t look at the doctor. He didn’t want to think about it. He rationally knew that this could happen, but it did not make it easier to have it happen.

“It is all possible that she is going to be waking up with many different memories… a couple times she has remembered a lot – almost to the point of what happened,” Marlow spoke as she took the chair and pulled it closer to Michael. “It’s part of the process.”

“She was scared of me,” Michael murmured as he rubbed his face. He shook it slightly. “It wasn’t hard to know that she was scared of me when she was first assigned to me. I hated the fact that I was assigned recruits to start with… I wanted her to be scared of me. Not now…”

“And ultimately, we know that she isn’t scared of you,” Marlow spoke as she watched Michael. She had told him that this part would be probably harder on him than it would be on Nikita. When Nikita woke up, it was always a puzzle to figure out what she would remember. Thus far, she at least remembered Michael. It would be harder for her if she would wake up and not remember Michael at all. While there had been two times that she was scared of Michael and sure that she was still in Section, there was one time that she woke up and thought that she was out of Section One for a couple years and then one other time that she talked about Operations.

It wasn’t that she was up for long. These were periods of time no longer than a half hour and the one time it was almost thirty-six hours before she woke up again. But the length of time between seemed to be shortening, but Marlow knew not to count on that.

“She responds positively to you when she is asleep. And when she hasn’t forgotten too much, she wants you,” Dr. Carle spoke as Michael looked at the doctor before confessing, “I’m worried about why she isn’t staying awake longer.”

Marlow exhaled. “She is healing. This isn’t an exact science and recovery either. But she is getting better, Michael.”

Michael closed his eyes as he had come to realize that whenever Nikita was injured that she responded with him around. It had almost been that way from before she even knew that she was in Section One. He exhaled and looked at Dr. Carle. “There is more between us this time…”

“Adrian has more than explained to me about the phasing shell,” Dr. Carle pointed out to Michael. “I, unfortunately, understand enough about the process… of that device.”

“This is nothing like that,” Michael swung his head back and forth as that had been a difficult time that he thought would be the worse until he had gotten that fated phone call.

”I need it, Michael… just let me go and I’ll be a better operative…” Nikita fired out as she reached her long arms out for the doorframe, trying to pull her lanky body from Michael’s tight grasp as she tried to leave the room of the safe house that Michael had taken her to. When he had guided her out of Section One, Michael thought that it would just be a night or two of being upset.

She had made the determination to destroy the machine. Nikita knew that it was wrong for her.

He had almost been lulled into complacency that first night with Nikita being almost mute. But he sensed Nikita moving and had to run her down as she made a dash for the car. She had violently fought against him as Michael dragged her down to the ground just short of the car. He had gotten a big goose-egg lump on his head, but Michael didn’t let go.

From the moment he got her inside the house that time, Michael knew not to let her out of his site, and Nikita alternated between being understanding about that decision to hating that decision.

His stomach churned as he leaned back to use his body mass to pry her fingers away from the doorframe. He had figured out yesterday how to snap Nikita out of this need to go back to the phasing shell. “Do I need to get the belt, Nikita?”

Her body went almost slack and Michael stumbled back and ended up tumbling to the floor with Nikita solidly in his arms. He heard the tears and Michael instinctively wrapped Nikita closer to his body, pressing her head against his chest. “I’m sorry…. I’m sorry…”

It took some time, but Michael felt Nikita calm and finally she pushed away from him, but in a way that said that she needed space. She rubbed her face to try to hide the tears and then slapped her leg. “I thought… I was over that, Michael.”

“So did I,” Michael admitted as he shrugged his shoulders slightly as he stood up and looked down at Nikita. Things were changing between them and he watched Nikita stand up also. “You have to tell Section.”

“You aren’t on deck for a mission,” Michael calmly replied as he studied Nikita, making sure that she was fine and not ready to bolt again.

“That can change in a moment’s notice… and I won’t have you trying to cover for me,” Nikita declared as she stood up straight and shook her head. “You don’t need to protect me.”

“I’m your trainer.”

“Section needs you more than they need me. What if this was a test for you? What if someone wants you to be off your game? You have possible missions on deck, right?” Nikita inquired and Michael didn’t let Nikita see that she was right. “You need not worry about me.”

“Why are you like this now, Michael?” Nikita questioned as she shook her head. “The good of Section matters more. You know the next time they find someone messing around with something like the phasing shell… if I’m alive, I’m the first one they are sticking in it… and they had to know that I was probably going to become addicted to that machine. An addict of any sort was a better selection than someone who was never an addict to anything…”

“Stop,” Michael directed Nikita as he moved directly in front of her. He wanted to touch her, but he didn’t. He studied her. “You are a good operative, Nikita.”

She snorted.

Michael waited and blinked his eyes slowly. “You wouldn’t be paired with me as often if you weren’t. Things will change and they will start to realize this.”

“You are blind,” Nikita shook her head from side to side. “I’m much more expendable… and I think it’s ok to admit that.”

Michael wanted to tell her no, but he just looked at her, frustrated with her change of opinion, but then, he wasn’t sure. Could this have been part of the phasing shell too? Could Madeline have done something to change who Nikita was?

Michael glanced back in the room and saw Nikita moving. She was waking up. He looked at Dr. Carle and rolled his shoulders back. “When is Adrian going to stop in?”

“She isn’t ready to see her,” Marlow rasped as she didn’t understand Adrian. She hadn’t come down into the wing at all, but she hadn’t left the hospital either. “She will.”

“She wants to be sure that Nikita knows that she is friendly,” Michael retorted as he moved and went to be in with Nikita as she woke and to sort out what memories she was waking up with this time.
