“This is not going to work,” Mick declared as he swung his head from side to side. “Nikita is going to hate this place.”

“It just needs some personalization,” Adrian explained and Mick snorted. He looked at the large stone walls and shivered. “It needs more than personalization. It needs to stop looking like it could double as a torture chamber… and both Michael and Nikita have experience in those… multiple times.”

Adrian tilted her head to the side. “That is because there are not any curtains up… once we layer up curtains… and artwork… and comfortable furniture…”

“Your idea of comfortable furniture and Nikita’s idea of comfortable furniture are two separate things,” Mick retorted as he shook his head and walked out of the room that was probably the formal dining room. “I know that we need the space… but the stone floors… that’s not good for someone who isn’t walking yet…”

“She is going to be strong fast now that she is awake.”

“Not that fast,” Mick shook his head as he realized how long it took him to just get to the main hallway. “I told you as soon as I saw the outside of the house… it’s too much… it is just missing a moat, Adrian.”

Adrian frowned and folded her arms across her chest. “Michael and Nikita won’t be living alone. We know that Nikita is going to force Michael to bring her out of the hospital sooner than she should be… and that there won’t be a stop at the rehabilitation hospital that all the experts would suggest. We need space like this.”

“With a spiral stone staircase?” Mick pointed as he looked upstairs. “She can’t even get to the bathroom on her own… and she has told you that she doesn’t like places like this.”

“That was after a bad time working on… helping Michael,” Adrian tried to stay firm. “This place just needs some work. Some carpeting.”

“You don’t want to carpet these stairs,” Mick announced as he sat down on them and looked at Adrian as he shook his head. “Michael gave me veto power.”

“He was saying that I should listen to your suggestions…”

“He gave me veto power,” Mick was the one to cross his arms as he shook his head. But his eyes challenged Adrian and she got the warning. Mick was just thinking that he was about to call Michael to confirm that he had veto power and Adrian shouldn’t push him.

“It’s going to be hard to find the space that is needed with what Nikita would consider comfortable,” Adrian relented and Mick sighed again. “You have to stop thinking about what you like… and stop thinking about any of the property you already own…. You and Nikita may have some things in common with gardens… but not with what is important for the inside of the house.”

Adrian groaned as she wanted to protest, but she rolled her shoulders back. She had heard often enough about what Nikita thought about most of the places that Adrian had used while Nikita was separated from Michael. She never stayed long – usually because Adrian would force her to heal from some sort of injury. But often Adrian would find that Nikita had left early in the morning when she was just barely healthy enough.

She didn’t know that it was often Mick who came to pick Nikita up while she snuck away.

Mick waited as Nikita gingerly sat down in his car in the very early morning light outside the large fortress of a house that Adrian was staying in this time. Nikita glanced and winced as she could feel the bruises from the ropes that had almost choked her to death.

“Michael thought you wouldn’t want to be alone,” Mick commented as he pulled away. Nikita blinked her eyes. “He isn’t around… so it doesn’t matter who I’m around right now.”

Mick pressed his lips together and swallowed hard. “He found you in a wedding dress?”

“Henry was already killed,” Nikita looked straight ahead as she shivered with the memories. “And I’m fine.”

“You are shaking as much as Michael was… and he had a good shot of whisky or something like that,” Mick stated as he swung his head from side to side. “He was beside himself when he realized that you went into that mission.”

“I saved his and Section’s ass with Bright Star,” Nikita hurled as she leaned back in the chair. “They keep on assigning these women underneath Michael… or partnered with him that don’t know what the hell they are doing. It’s like Madeline and Operations want to kill him.”

“No,” Mick shook his head. “When you get involved… all their mistakes come to light, but makes Michael look like a hero because some magical force turned the tide… but he was scared this time… he had Adrian working on finding you if he couldn’t spring himself out of Section… and Operations wasn’t happy.”

“Boo-hoo.”

Nikita’s phone rang and she turned it off and tossed it to the backseat. “I wish he could have stayed… at least one night…”

“Adrian?” Mick asked as he glanced back to the phone and Nikita curtly nodded her head up and down. “You know the drill.”

“Unfortunately,” Mick snorted and then he made sure to turn off his own phone. “So… was it like a fortress in there?”

“Dungeon,” Nikita shivered as she thought about it again. “Most of it didn’t even have electrical. I don’t know why she thought I’d stay.”

“The gardens?” Mick chuckled as he turned onto another road and picked up speed. “So… I have a couple options for you…”

“I need to get home. I have a shift tonight at the hospital.”

“Michael told me that I need to stop letting you bully me… and I think this is something that you are crazy to think of doing,” Mick groaned as he knew that Michael was going to be upset. “But Michael doesn’t know how much you do scare me.”

“That’s good, because you aren’t changing my mind.”

Mick knew that if Nikita didn’t go to work, she wouldn’t sleep either way. Not after what she had been thru. To hear what a sanitized version was of what had happened; Mick had a sense that things had been bad with the man who was obsessed with Nikita. Mick knew that it was best for Nikita to be busy for a couple nights.

They drove in silence and Mick was sure that Nikita had drifted to sleep, but she did not look comfortable. He pulled up to her place and Nikita instantly shifted. “Please… don’t go into work tonight, Nikita. Michael will be upset with me.”

“He’ll be disappointed in you,” Nikita corrected as she patted Mick’s hand. “He’ll be upset with me.”

“You don’t look like you should be working.”

“It’s good that I have make-up in that apartment,” Nikita forced a smile before she retrieved her phone and got out of the car. “Thank you, Mick. I couldn’t stay there any longer.”

“This is where you think we should move?” Adrian asked as Mick pulled into a long driveway that pulled into a large farm house. “Yes.”

“I’m sure that it needs a ton of work.”

“It was just renovated and it has the modern touches… plus, Birkoff is aching to do some real work. He’ll probably want to pull his own geeky wires himself,” Mick pulled up to the large wraparound porch and turned off the car. “It’s peaceful out here.”

“It’s wide open,” Adrian muttered and Mick nodded his head. “Michael will like that.”

Adrian wasn’t sure about that but then she was sure that Michael would be happy wherever Nikita was.

“Come inside…”

“It sounds like nothing I want is being considered,” Adrian folded her arms and Mick nodded his head. “Michael said he didn’t want any of your places… he wants his own place with Nikita.”

“That you can live in… and Walter… and Dr. Carle… and some nurses…”

“To start,” Mick nodded his head up and down. “Nikita needs to feel comfortable. She never had really good relationships with women and it’s ok if you don’t want to live out here. We’ll all understand. You’ve done us so much good already.”

“Like hell I’m letting you fools be on your own while she is recovering!”
