Nikita heard Michael’s voice first and then she felt the pain in her body. She was used to waking up in pain, but this was different – new pain. It caused her to groan as she turned her head towards Michael’s voice, almost sure that he was stroking at her cheek.
It was as she was about to open her eyes that Nikita felt a feeling of dread and she started to have flashes of what she feared were memories.
Michael was telling her that she was forgetting something and she was fighting him – in the hallway. Then she hit him.
Nikita tried to gasp again but groaned as she felt the pain and she simply knew.
“Come on, Kita… time to wake up…” Michael whispered as he brushed her hair back. Nikita flicked her eyes open and she just knew that it wasn’t a dream. There was no doubt with the way that Michael was there. “It… wasn’t a dream…”
Michael pulled his hand away as he shifted to sit on the side of the bed. “You didn’t know that when you were awake.”
Nikita shook her head with the pain rattling inside of it. “No… I fought you… while you were… trying to help me…”
“And I should have protected you more,” Michael declared as he looked at Nikita. “You didn’t hurt me.”
“I see that I hurt you,” Nikita spoke as she reached for his face. Michael turned away and sat up to pull away from Nikita’s touch. “It’s just a bruise.”
“Michael!”
“I’m more concerned about you… because I had to take you down hard, Kita… before you reached the stairs… I didn’t want to do that, but I needed to protect you,” Michael explained as he studied Nikita. She turned her head away and he felt the tears starting to come. “Please, Kita…”
“Don’t…” Nikita swung her head and covered her face with her hands as she forced herself to sit up further in bed. She groaned in pain but turned away from Michael.
She was sure that she was past this. There were times that she was fuzzy with things, but there was no reason to worry people about that. Michael would just be more concerned about that and she didn’t want that. But now it was clear that she had lost even that for a while. “You shouldn’t… have to put up with this…”
“I’m not putting up with anything,” Michael firmly declared as he didn’t like the way that Nikita was talking. He rolled his shoulders back and exhaled. “Kita… tell me the truth…”
“The truth as I know it?” Nikita hissed as she shook her head. “As I know it right now… this shouldn’t have happened.”
“But it is ok that it did, Kita. Dr. Carle did warn us that this wasn’t going to be all easy… that you could have set backs with your memories,” Michael tried to soften his voice as he told Nikita something that he knew that she did not want to hear.
Nikita didn’t reply. She turned her head away from Michael and stared at the wall. Michael waited five minutes. And then ten minutes. Then twenty minutes. “Kita… this isn’t going to help.”
“Do I need constant monitoring now?”
“I need to know if you got hurt… when I had too…”
“Capture me,” Nikita interrupted but she did not turn to look at Michael out of her stubborn nature. “I’m fine.”
“I never trust that statement.”
“Trust it now,” Nikita seethed and Michael groaned as he leaned his head back. “I’ve been worried while you were asleep about if I hurt you. You know that it hurts me tremendously when that has happened in the past, but I know that you know that I didn’t have a choice.”
But she was silent and Michael rounded the bed to squat down and look at Nikita’s eyes. “I know that you are frustrated… probably more at yourself than anything else. I’ll let you hold onto that pity and hatred for yourself… but I need to know if you need any more attention physically before I can allow you to stay there pouting.”
Nikita pushed the blanket off and glared at Michael. “Look for yourself… I have pains… but I always have pains.”
Michael saw the bruises and he pulled the blanket back up. “I’ll go get Dr. Carle.”
There was not biting retort and Michael knew that he wasn’t the person that Nikita needed right now. He needed to know that she was fine, so he was going to start with the doctor first.
