Sabina had been waiting at the end of the aisle, twisting her body in twirls as Michael walked with Nikita out of the room and into the hallway. Sabina jumped and looked at her parents. She mouthed the word beautiful as Nikita motioned her hand for her to start walking.
Sabina looked at the bouquet that was in her hands and saw that her mother didn’t have one. She didn’t want to carry a bouquet and Sabina frowned. She turned and placed the bouquet on the floor. Sabina knew that her mother got her it because she wanted to carry it. But this wasn’t about Sabina today.
Nikita gasped as Sabina then turned and started to walk down the side aisle, because there was no middle aisle as Nikita had suggested. Michael gazed at Nikita’s eyes and shrugged his shoulders. “I may have talked to her.”
“Miracle worker,” Nikita whispered as she had tried to reason with her daughter for weeks about things about the wedding. Michael shook his head. “All she needed to do was see you this happy.”
Michael started to stroll with Nikita as she looked at him. She knew where he was leading and she was fine with that. She felt their friends looking at them as they got to the room. They were all sitting and Nikita had asked them to stay like that, but Walter got up, which got everyone on their feet.
But Nikita didn’t notice.
Michael slowed his pace as he stared at Nikita. Everything that they had gotten thru was gone right now. This was just them. They have reached a place that neither of them thought that they would get to and he didn’t want to rush thru the moment.
Walter heard the silence in the room and while it was special for Michael and Nikita, it unnerved him. He couldn’t believe that Nikita had nixed music to walk down the aisle. She loved music. It was wrong and he was going to do something about it. “At last… my love has come along…”
Nikita stopped walking and blinked her eyes as she heard Walter. She pulled her eyes off of Michael and Michael turned to look at Walter. “Walter…”
“Sugar, it just isn’t right to be silent… this is a happy moment for you and Michael… Sugar, let me sing… let us sing… it isn’t the wedding march… it probably won’t even be in tune… but let me…” Walter explained. Michael turned to look at Nikita. He was going to take Nikita’s lead on this. “Nothing is traditional here… no minister…”
“It’s Tom who is going to marry us,” Nikita nervously chuckled as she rubbed her fingers against Michael’s arm. Michael nodded his head. “You always said he could make it happen.”
Nikita laughed this time with a bit more volume. She looked at Walter and Sabina who was already standing in front of Tom, waiting beside Adam, who as Michael’s best man was not walking the aisle with them. Then she saw everyone else. They just wanted to do what would make her happy.
“It’s a beautiful song… At last,” Michael whispered as he knew not to sing the words. He tilted his head and Nikita smiled while she started to nod her head up and down.
Michael turned slightly to match his stance like he was the moment before Nikita stopped walking. Walter didn’t need to see any more. “At last… my love has come along…”
Michael took a step and Nikita followed. Walter was magic too. “My lonely days are gone… my life is like a song…”
Nikita leaned in closer to Michael’s body as they got just a few steps ahead, but it was the perfect pace for her right now.
Others cleared their throats and slowly started to add to Walter’s voice. “Oh yeah, yeah…at last…the skies above are blue…”
“Like your eyes,” Michael whispered as he leaned into Nikita’s face and then pressed a kiss on her cheek.
Neither saw the others prodding the few that were not singing. Davenport shook his head at Ellie as she poked her elbow into him. He bowed his head. “I have an awful voice…”
Ellie shrugged her shoulders and continued with the next verse, shuttering when she heard Davenport join in, knowing that she wouldn’t willingly ask him to sing again. But despite the tone, it did nothing to diminish the effect. “And I found a dream that I could speak to… a dream that I can call my own…”
Michael got them to the front and now they had to turn. Michael paused and took Nikita’s arm out of his elbow and slowly led her around him in a slow-motion spin before easing her back into his arms. Everyone got to see the magnitude of how pretty her dress was and Whitney was able to snap every single second of those moments. Nikita wouldn’t believe when she saw it later how clearly happy and relaxed that she was.
Once back in Michael’s arms, Nikita shook her head slightly. “I thought… no dancing.”
“That wasn’t dancing. That was walking, Kita,” Michael joked gently as Nikita smiled back at him.
“I found a thrill to press my cheek to… a thrill that I have never known…” the group continued to sing for Michael and Nikita as Michael took his free hand against Nikita’s cheek. She turned her head so that her lips could kiss his palm.
“Oh yeah yeah, and you smile, you smile… oh, and then the spell was cast…” Walter led on as he forced back tears of joy. He took a deep breath as he willed his voice to not crack with the tremendous emotion that he was feeling right now. He was sure that everyone felt it. “And here we are in Heaven… For you are mine, at last…”
As if it was planned, Michael and Nikita were there in front of Tom while the last note was still hanging in the air. Slowly everyone behind them sat down and Tom stood there, his hands in his pockets. He looked around and shrugged his shoulders. “So… we are here for your wedding… and you want nothing religious… no traditional vows or readings… well, we’ve had a song… and I’m not sure what to do next… maybe we open the floor for others to tell their stories of how much you love each other…”
Nikita shook her head and forth with slight panic until she saw that Tom was grinning back at her, clearly poking a joke at the rules for the wedding. Tom shrugged his shoulders. “I almost started out as if this was an AA meeting, Nikita. So, I think make a slight joke at your expense was better.”
Now Nikita laughed in Michael’s arms as she did relax.
“Tom, you know that Michael is not a patient man,” Davenport called out and the whole room laughed. Michael turned and shook his head. “On the contrary, Dav… I would have waited forever for today for Kita.”
Nikita almost melted more as she reached out and turned Michael look back at her. “Only you.”
“Is that your vow?” Michael inquired and Nikita shrugged her shoulders slightly. “I did have more to say… but it can be that simple.”
“Seriously… you both tied my hands a lot with what I could do outside of presenting papers with your married names,” Tom commented and everyone chuckled. “So, in regards to your wishes… we are doing our best… but I did have a few words to say.”
Nikita looked at Michael and just looked at him. She just needed him. Tom was talking and it didn’t matter. She had Tom.
Finishing up quickly, realizing that no one, not even the friends, was listening to him, Tom cleared his throat. “I know that there were some vows that you wanted to make with Adam and Sabina… and I believe even without these vows that you would be one of the strongest families that I know… and I know that the quote by Letty Cottin Pogrebin of ‘If the family were a fruit, it would be an orange, a circle of sections, held together but separable - each segment distinct,’ describes all of you perfectly.”
They had been thru this part with Adam and Sabina, Sabina being the wild card. Adam took Sabina’s hand and had it so that Sabina stood on the one side of Michael and Adam moved to the other side of Nikita, not wanting to separate that hold that Michael had on Nikita.
“Ready,” Adam spoke and Sabina nodded her head up and down. “So we can get to the part where my dad kisses my mommy.”
Tom chuckled. “I have three questions for all of you. I would like all of you to answer each of them with the words, ‘I promise’…. Do you promise to love, respect and protect each other from this day forward?”
Walter snickered behind the family as the four all answered with the clear “I promise.”
“I wonder if hacking is part of protecting?” Jason quipped to Daisy gently.
“Do you promise to always try to be the best person you can be?” Tom inquired.
Nikita looked at Michael and spoke “I promise” while Adam and Sabina echoed the same words.
“Do you promise to accept the responsibility of being a family, and encourage, and support each other in your new life together?” Tom spoke as his voice cracked as he knew how special this was for them, even though they weren’t going to hold to many traditions at all.
“I promise,” they replied.
Adam turned and faced everyone, looking at his father and Nikita. “I know that you had vows for Sabina and myself to say… but Sabina wanted me to just talk… about how long we’ve waited for this and how right it is for our family.”
Nikita pressed her free hand against her chest as she wasn’t expecting this. Adam smiled at her and winked at Sabina. “We know that we have the best parents in you… that you will do anything for us like you do anything for each other. We may have fights and I may even say that I hate you from time to time…but there is no one else that I would want to be in my life as my dad and mom.”
The room gasped as Adam called Nikita mom. Michael was just thankful that Adam had said that to Nikita and explained it to her before the wedding. If this was the first time that she heard it, she would have ran, or collapsed, or something. Michael just knew that she was able to stand there, still trembling with Adam’s words hitting her strongly into her heart, because she had heard it before.
Nikita reached out for Adam as she brought Sabina closer to her. She kissed Adam’s cheek as her children embraced her and Michael. There were no dry eyes in the room.
Tom watched as Adam led Sabina back to their spot behind their parents and cleared his throat. “I have no more of a ceremony… you both promised me that you were going to say a few things to each other… so I can at least in my good conscience say that you made vows to each other.”
Both Michael and Nikita nodded their heads up and down. Michael kissed Nikita’s cheek gently.
“It’s too soon, Michael!” Davenport playfully reminded Michael from the crowd. Michael glared at Davenport for a moment with cold eyes and then broke into a large smile. “Never too soon. Not soon enough.”
Nikita squeezed Michael’s hand and she looked back at her friends. “I lost the coin toss… so I have to go first…”
Michael heard the chuckle and he looked at Nikita. She swallowed. “I… I tried to write something of my own… but the words that I wanted… well, they sounded so cheesy…”
Michael shook his head and Nikita nodded her head. “I wanted to say the word ditto, but then I lost the coin toss.”
Everyone laughed heartily with that comment. Nikita swallowed and looked at Michael. “I found this… and I’m borrowing it… because it is the closest that I could come to saying ditto… without having you go first.”
Michael didn’t care. He knew that she thought about this long and hard.
“In your eyes, I have found my home. In your heart, I have found my love. In your soul, I have found my mate. With you, I am whole, full, alive. You make me laugh. You let me cry. You are my breath, my every heartbeat,” Nikita spoke as she clearly focused only on Michael. She pulled out the ring that was for Michael and placed it on his finger. “I am yours. You are mine. Of this we are certain. You are lodged in my heart. The small key is lost. You must stay there forever.”
Michael couldn’t help it. He kissed Nikita again and Tom had to reach out and touch Michael’s shoulder. “Sorry… it’s not official yet… and Nikita is missing a ring.”
“Thanks,” Michael dully spoke to Tom and he stroked his hand with the ring on it against Nikita’s cheek, seeing tears of joy being whisked away by his hand. “There are so many ways to say I love you, Kita… I could say those three words forever to you and not have said them enough.”
Nikita trembled and Michael took a moment until Nikita nodded her head up and down. He thought that the hard part was over for Nikita but it made sense. It was easy for her to tell him but it was harder sometimes for her to hear it. “I am overwhelmed with joy that you allow me to marry you on this day, as I would marry you on any day that you would have selected. I promise to wipe away your tears with my tender hands if you are sad and to try to make to make a joke to end the tears if those are happy tears.”
Nikita did chuckle and Michael reached for Adam to give him the ring. It was not as grand as Michael would have selected, but Nikita wanted simple. But it was still stunning platinum and he took Nikita hand to place the ring on it. “I know of your pain… and I can only wish with my caring and compassion that we will learn to carry that burden together. Today, we start anew. There is nothing on the canvas of our life. We are going to paint upon our canvas what we want our lives to be. We will fill them with the colors of our lives, together, with our children and with our friends. I gave you myself completely long ago and today is only to make official what has been. I promise to love you always and beyond.”
Tom saw the moment. He had to react quickly. “And I proudly pronounce you man and wife!”
There was no need for Tom to say that they could kiss. Michael curled Nikita into him, kissing her gently and prodding when Nikita melted into his body. She was not even worried about those around them as she moaned into Michael’s mouth, feeling as if she had just been connected to him in a way that defined definition and it was perfect.
Everyone clapped and clapped. The kiss continued and Walter started to laugh. “Come on, Michael… Sugar needs to breathe…”
“Come on, Dad,” Adam muttered as he tugged on his father’s jacket. “I don’t think any of us want to start to talk about the birds and bees right now…”
Michael heard that and pulled away from Nikita to see Sabina staring up at them with wide open eyes. He laughed and grabbed Nikita in his arms. They were married and even though Nikita said that she didn’t want him to do this, he spun her around in his arms.
And she surely didn’t complain.
