“Dad! Mom!” Adam called out as he jogged away from the playing field. Nikita arched an eyebrow as she looked at Michael. There was a reason for Adam to be calling her mom right now. She turned to watch Adam stop at the stands and take a girl’s hand.
And that would be the reason.
“You had a great game, Adam,” Michael smiled as Adam came closer. “Thanks… I should have gotten that header in…”
“Adam, you can’t get every goal,” the girl spoke and Nikita glanced at Michael and then back to Adam. “Your friend is right.”
“Yeah,” Adam looked to the ground with a half smile. “Cinda is usually right.”
“Hi,” Cinda looked at Nikita and then at Michael. “I’m Cinda Kavanagh.”
“I’m Michael Pomeroy and this is my wife, Nikita,” Michael extended his hand to shake Cinda’s hand, delightfully surprised with her manners. She smiled and looked at Nikita. “I’ve heard so much about you two, Mr. and Mrs. Pomeroy. Adam showed me the wedding pictures.”
“Please… call me Nikita,” Nikita spoke and Cinda nodded her head up and down. Nikita tilted her head to the side. “I haven’t seen you around the school.”
“Oh, I don’t go to the same school as Adam. I go to St. Monica’s… we have a really small school so it’s a treat to come to camp and cheer for big teams,” Cinda explained as she looked at Adam. “It doesn’t hurt when your team is winning. We don’t know that much either.”
“I know that we had plans to go to lunch… I was hoping that Cinda could come along,” Adam explained and Nikita jerked to look at Michael. Reagan was in the bathroom with Sabina and the plans were to tell the two of them at dinner about their new sibling-to-be.
Michael unwrapped his arms from around Nikita and winced. “Ah, Adam… We had to bring Sabina…”
Adam looked around and looked at Cinda. “I told you about my sister.”
“She is like a Mexican jumping bean?” Cinda chuckled as she took Adam’s hand and squeezed it. “It’s ok, Adam. You go have lunch with your family and come back later. They are going to show a movie up on the hill tonight.”
“I’m sorry, Cinda,” Adam whispered and Nikita cleared her throat. “How about we make plans to come up again next weekend? We will make sure that Sabina has plans and we’ll go somewhere that has something more than pizza.”
“That would be wonderful, but you don’t need to do that,” Cinda shook her head. Nikita sighed and looked at Adam. “We were supposed to be alone today… so we owe it to Adam.”
Nikita was relieved with how well things had gone from that moment. Cinda did run into Sabina and Adam had to introduce her. Sabina was actually on her best behavior and was relatively calm. Anyone could see that Adam was worried that Sabina was going to start asking inappropriate questions. Now they neared the pizza place and Nikita looked at Michael. He pulled in and Nikita took his hand. She didn’t want to do this in the restaurant.
“Ah… before we go in…. there is something we need to tell you…” Nikita stated and Michael nodded his head.
“Come on, Mom…. I want the double-cheese pizza with pineapple!” Sabina declared and Nikita chuckled as she dropped her head slightly. Michael tapped Nikita’s hand and winked at her. He knew that this was the right way to do things, but he looked at Adam and felt something. That Adam knew.
“Sabina… we wanted you both to know… that you are going to be having to share things with either a baby sister or a baby brother,” Nikita announced with a bright smile crossing her face, while her hand squeezed Michael’s as she was afraid of Sabina’s reaction.
The girl started to clap and smile, but it was much milder than what either person expected. She got out of the seat and leaned up enough to hug her mom. “I’m so happy for us!”
“Thanks,” Nikita patted Sabina’s back. Adam grinned. “I think it’s about time.”
“Adam!” Michael joshed him and Nikita shifted and rolled her arms back. She had seen something in Adam and wasn’t sure what it was. She was going to leave Michael to it. “So… Sabina, I find that I have to go to the bathroom a lot… let’s get in there and you can get our table while I run to the bathroom.”
Michael carefully watched Nikita lead Sabina out of the car and then glanced at the mirror where Adam sighed. “That wasn’t very subtle.”
“Adam…”
“Come on, Dad… Sabina and I knew,” Adam rolled his eyes as he shook his head slightly. “Why do you think that Sabina pulled that stunt last week?”
“But there is no way…”
“So, Nikita started prenatal vitamins, right?” Adam inquired and Michael nodded his head. “Of course… but Nikita put those in a different bottle.”
“And put the bottle into the recyclable bin… which Sabina went thru,” Adam shrugged his shoulders. “I think it’s cool… Sabina is going to be a great bigger sister.”
“Adam,” Michael leaned his head back. “Nikita is going to be upset that Sabina and you knew.”
“Don’t tell her.”
“That is not something that I plan on doing,” Michael declared firmly as he opened up the door and found Adam following him. “You’ll do your best to be truthful with Cinda. She is a nice girl.”
“She knows all about the mess with Lisa. Everyone else told her… and she still talked to me.”
Michael looked into the window and saw Nikita sitting down at the table with Sabina. She winked and Michael realized that Nikita must have caught on that both of the children knew before she announced it. Michael reached out for Adam, but his son pulled away. “Come on, Dad… I’m not a little boy anymore.”
“Until you are 18,” Michael grabbed Adam and noted that his son had gotten taller before walking into the restaurant. Then he realized that he was starting another life with Nikita right now, and his eldest was almost 18. Michael shook that thought out of his head and found the table deep into negotiations about what pizza to order.
