Nikita held onto Michael’s hand as he stood beside her. She looked at the machine to the right and took a deep breath. “What if he has to do the other type? I don’t know if I can do that, Michael.”

“Kita, let’s wait for Dr. Keane to do the trans-abdominal ultrasound first and not worry about other things unless he thinks they are needed. And you know that it would be only for the health of our baby,” Michael smoothed Nikita’s hair back as the door opened up. Dr. Keane smiled as he walked in. “I told you that I’d be doing the test. I don’t have any other patients right now…”

Nikita didn’t chuckle and Keane exhaled as he looked at Michael. “This will be a good thing… lots of good things today.”

Without a sound Nikita shifted on the table as she wasn’t so sure. The pelvic examination had been almost a disaster. It was good that Dr. Keane didn’t have other patients waiting because it took them almost three hours to get thru the entire process two weeks ago. She was thankful that it was just that exam because afterwards Nikita needed to get outside for fresh air.

“Have you had all the water?”

Nikita mutely nodded her head up and down. Michael squeezed her hand and smiled. “We are going to get to see our baby, Kita.”

But she didn’t smile. She felt the guilt of knowing that she would never have a memory of doing this for Sabina. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes. She took that guilty thought and tied it to a balloon in her mind and let it drift away. This had not been Beatrice’s idea. Rather it was Rhoda’s idea. She had been in the room, along with Ellie, for the pelvic exam. Or they had been until Nikita kicked them all out, except Michael.

“And you have all your clothes on this time,” Keane pointed out as he turned on the machine.

“For now,” Nikita cryptically responded. Keane nodded his head. “Yeah… it’s possible we’ll have to try the other ultrasound… but you should be further along, Nikita. I don’t think you will need to change out of your clothes.”

Keane looked at Michael and nodded his head. “Can you help her lean back some? The table adjusts… I just need a slight slope…”

“I… I don’t feel good,” Nikita swallowed hard and Michael continued to do as the doctor had directed him. Keane looked at the machine and then back to Nikita. “Nothing to be worried about here.”

“Morning sickness,” Nikita spoke and Keane just allowed the statement to drop away. He shifted and waited as Nikita sat back and Michael helped lift her shirt and she eased her pants down slightly. She was just barely showing, and Keane wasn’t sure if she noticed it. A doctor would notice it more at this stage. It was so subtle and Keane wasn’t going to ruin that discovery from mother and father.

“So… we have our routine prepared. You know who I am, right?”

“Dr. Keane,” Nikita answered as she exhaled. He raised an eyebrow. “I told you both… It’s just Keane.”

Nikita looked at him and swallowed. “Keane.”

“Good,” Keane smiled back at Nikita. “And you are here for?”

“For my health and my baby’s health.”

“And you aren’t alone.”

“Michael is with me.”

Keane made sure that the conducting gel was warming up and he nodded his head. “Am I going to hurt you?”

“No,” Nikita spoke, but there was more anxiety in her voice.

“Nikita…”

“You aren’t an abuser…. You aren’t one of those men. You are my doctor. My baby’s doctor,” Nikita roughly declared as she leaned her head back. “Can we get on with it? I do still have my clothes on.”

Michael chuckled and nodded his head, giving Keane the indication that Nikita was ready for this. This routine, although quickly finished this time, had taken a long time the previous visit. He knew that right now it probably wasn’t needed, but it was best to continue the repetition of it even without an internal exam.

Keane had gotten a lot of information during that examination that he probably should have shared with the couple, but they wouldn’t have enjoyed any of it. He was going to make things happen today that were going to be magical.

“Ok… this is going to be chilly… I try to warm it up… but it can only get so warm…”

Nikita didn’t jump as the gel went on her stomach. She looked down and looked at Michael. “Michael…”

“I told you,” Michael smiled as he kissed her forehead. “Not flat.”

Keane withheld a huge grin. He was happy to know that Michael had already noticed this. It showed how much he knew about her. He explained how the ultrasound worked and he pressed the wand onto Nikita’s stomach. He had one ear bud in and shifted the wand until he knew that it was time to turn on the sound.

Nikita’s face turned into a glowing face of joy, like she was a little girl who had just met a princess, when the sound started to fill the room. She didn’t need to be told what it was. Neither did Michael. Nikita looked at Michael as he cupped her face. “That’s our baby.”

Nikita’s eyes filled slightly with tears. “I never thought… I’d hear… a baby… inside… our baby… our baby, Michael. And I’m with you…”

“We are married,” Michael whispered before he kissed Nikita tenderly.

Keane allowed the couple a couple more moments as he looked at the screen and made some notes. They were so focused on the heartbeats that they simply didn’t notice. He waited and then turned the screen slightly. “Here is your baby…”

He watched as both Michael and Nikita looked at the screen. She was far enough along that he didn’t need to point out the outline of the baby. He watched as the tears of happiness now were going down both of their faces. Michael wrapped his arm around Nikita’s shoulder. “I didn’t get… to see Adam’s ultrasounds… I was… training you…”

Nikita swallowed and looked at Michael. She had assumed that he had been there for it all. Now she realized that they were both experiencing this first together. Nikita touched Michaels face and then took his hand to reach out towards the screen. “Beautiful….”

“I thought you were about this far along… you are probably just about done with the first trimester, Nikita. That may bring some diminishing of your morning sickness symptoms… it almost means that since it is August… I’d say that you are due in February. Right around Valentine’s Day.”

Nikita leaned her head against Michael’s body. “Michael… we are going to have a baby.”

“Yes we are,” Michael nodded his head as he kissed her forehead. “Look how perfect it is.”

“And there is only one,” Keane stated and Nikita laughed happily. “I knew that someone told you that Sabina wanted there to be multiples!”
“Some would also have thought with your sickness that it was a possibility… but I never suspected that to be the case,” Keane replied as he shifted slightly and turned the screen back towards him. “Let me… do this…”

A few moments later he turned the screen around and felt Nikita’s body jump as she saw the 3-D image of her baby. “Oh my… look… oh… oh...”

“Breath, Kita…” Michael reminded her as he felt stunned as he saw the image of their baby, the distinct hands and he leaned back his head to look up to the ceiling. He was so lucky to have Nikita and his family, but this was more than he anticipated having. He knew how special this was and he didn’t have any more words as Nikita didn’t either.

“Don’t worry… I’m taping this all,” Keane smiled brightly as he gave them a few more moments to look at the screen, although it was just a recording now as he had taken the ultrasound off of Nikita’s stomach and had wiped the gel away.

The parents needed this.
