Dmitry walked into the studio and looked at Davenport and then the darkroom. “Who is in the darkroom?”

“Nikita,” Davenport replied and Dmitry blinked. “Again?”

“Yep. She was here when I got done with that product shoot…. I guess she is feeling much better now,” Davenport shrugged his shoulders and smiled. “She also cancelled a couple things… and declared that she isn’t taking anything more on Sundays.”

“Really?”

“Yep,” Davenport nodded his head. He knew that this was a huge change for Nikita but he was grateful. He was sticking in with the photography for now, for Nikita, but he knew that he wasn’t truly invested in it. “Adam’s camp is over this weekend. Tom is coming back with Laura and her father. I think it’s more than just being pregnant.”

“You’d think being pregnant would be enough,” Dmitry shrugged his shoulders as he shifted and looked around. “I didn’t think she was doing much real film any longer.”

“Her favorite digital went down. It’s in the shop,” Davenport sighed as he looked at Dmitry as he pulled his camera out and looked at Davenport. “We have the same camera. I have three of them.”

“She wouldn’t want to ask you to borrow…”

“Why not? I’m not part of the inner circle?” Dmitry placed the camera down as he pulled out the memory card. “I don’t understand most of you. I don’t understand why Nikita didn’t tell me that she is turning things down… because I know plenty of good photographers who would die for a chance to work here.”

Davenport saved his work as he watched Dmitry slam the card into the computer. “Look… Nikita can be difficult.”

“Don’t give me some speech about pregnancy hormones,” Dmitry stopped Davenport with a snapped voice. “It isn’t just Nikita. You won’t talk about what other things you’d rather be doing. You ran off when I asked why you weren’t engaged yet to your doctor woman when Mick and Reagan announced that they were married… and Michael… well, he scares me.”

“He should scare you,” Davenport almost growled. He turned away and took a deep breath. “It’s just better for you.”

“Come on… that’s an excuse,” Dmitry shook his head back and forth. “Makes me worry that someday I’m going to come here and this will all be gone.”

“It won’t be,” Nikita spoke as she had exited the darkroom. She leaned against the door and looked at Dmitry and then Davenport. “The things that we can’t talk about… the things that we won’t talk about. They aren’t a threat. If we all disappear, it’s because someone got mixed back into something that they shouldn’t have gotten mixed back into. That’s why it’s good that some of us have regular jobs… as photographers and such.”

Davenport knew at that point that Nikita was aware that he was thinking of pulling away from photography sooner than later. She was making her argument made that she didn’t think it was wise for him to do that. She had become more and more animate that they all needed to step away from aspects of their former lives if they good. She was closing down The Angel.

Dmitry looked at Davenport and then back to Nikita. “It’s good to see you looking so well.”

“I’m big,” Nikita shrugged her shoulders slightly as she rubbed her hands over her loose top so they could see the small rounding of her stomach that she wasn’t shy about at this point. She was amazed that it was there and that others could see it. She wasn’t going to flaunt it, but she wasn’t going to hide it.

“You look happy,” Dmitry corrected and Nikita pushed away from the door and placed her hand against his cheek. “I was going to ask you about other photographers…. I’m going to change things here.”

“Really?”

Nikita glanced out the corner of her eye. She whirled around and pointed to Davenport. “Don’t you go sneaking out. I’m going to talk to you too.”

Davenport stopped in his path and nodded his head, knowing that he was caught for the moment. He looked back at Dmitry who was still stunned with knowing that Nikita wanted his opinion on new photographers.

“I’ve decided… I can be more exclusive with the actual work that I take on… I don’t know what I’m going to want to do once this baby is here… I may want to work full time... or I might want to work part time… I don’t see me staying at home all the time… but I want the options and to make that happen, I need more photographers and I need to do less myself.”

“I can get some of them to come in for interviews… and bring in their portfolios.”

“No,” Nikita swung her head. “I think I want to do something different… we’ll have an art show… they can submit one photograph… and the proceeds will be for that new charity… the one that people think that the Angel started… You can coordinate all of that… by the end of the month… that’s almost three and a half weeks.”

Dmitry swallowed. “What?”

“Oh, and make sure that you work in some portion for high school students… I’ll offer a scholarship…” Nikita spoke casually as she walked towards Davenport. “What is this about you not believing in marriage?”

“Nikita…”

“Don’t you dare give me lies, Davenport,” Nikita swung her arm over Davenport’s shoulder. “Mick is engaged for Christ’s sake.”

This was not the topic that Davenport was anticipating when Nikita stopped him.

“Ah… we all think that Mick jumped the gun,” Davenport pointed out with smirk. But the look in return told Davenport to try again. “Ah… Mick was still struggling to find himself. Both myself and Ellie are fine with who we are… and who we are for each other.”

“Get a ring. Get down on a knee. Get her engaged,” Nikita directed as she swatted his head slightly and walked away.

Davenport shook his head and was confused.

What had just happened?
