Max Campbell.
Things had been ok until Max Campbell started school. Since then, Reagan felt under siege, but it never showed itself at the school. At school, Sabina was an angel. She appeared to be friends with Max and she seemed to thrive even more.
And after the second day, once home, Sabina was completely different about Max.
“I abjure that I said I liked that boy… He is grandiloquence and obstreperous during lunch when it should only be about fun, especially since he has the propensity to migration to my friends!” Sabina ranted as she stomped down the hallway and dropped her book bag outside of the kitchen.
Reagan rubbed her forehead. Sabina was very upset when she started to spout off the SAT words. “Sabina, it’s his first week of school.”
“Don’t rebuke me!” Sabina shook her head. “You are mine. I had you first.”
That was a wonderfully delightful mix of SAT words and Sabina’s true age and Reagan had to suppress a giggle as it would only incite the girl further. “We had many discussions on how this would impact things at school Sabina. I’m not only there for you any longer.”
“I’m allowed to be the recalcitrant pupil about this particular coerced situation,” Sabina turned on her heals and stormed back towards the door. Reagan knew that she wasn’t done yet.
“It’s flabbergasting that you cannot phantom the emotions that I have about this Reagan! This… this maverick may have acumen for books, but he is immature and has no modicum of common sense,” Sabina shouted as Nikita entered from the back and winced. “Sabina… why can I hear you outside?”
“You are on Mr. Campbell’s side too,” Sabina pouted and this time she stormed upstairs. Nikita waited and then snickered. “I guess she doesn’t like Max again today.”
“How did you guess?” Reagan sighed as she opened up the refrigerator and pulled out two sodas. She handed one to Nikita and sank into the chair. “As soon as we pulled away from the school, that is what started.”
Nikita took a sip and then looked at Reagan. “And how much did you understand?”
Reagan snorted. “Ah… not… not everything.”
Nikita sighed and sat down. “Michael even had to look up a couple words after dinner last night…”
Reagan shook her head sadly from side to side. “I don’t know what it is exactly what Sabina has against Max. He seems like everyone else.”
“He is new,” Nikita suggested and sighed as she rubbed her stomach slightly. “Or is it really about Max and something else?”
Reagan didn’t know what to say. She had wondered the same thing. Only Sabina knew and she used these big words as a huge defensive shield.
The door opened and Adam trotted upstairs, clearly in from soccer practice. But he was back downstairs quickly. “She is ranting in her room still.”
Nikita shrugged her shoulders. “At least you shouldn’t have to study for the vocabulary part of the SAT, Adam.”
“Not funny,” Adam deadpanned as he looked at Reagan. “Are you teaching her those words?”
“Me?” Reagan shook her head. “She taught herself, Adam.”
“She said that I was being obtuse when I saw her in the hallway and asked her to calm down… and something else… it almost didn’t sound English,” Adam narrowed his eyes. Reagan sighed. “Well… the second graders are starting to learn Spanish this year…”
“Oh crap,“ Adam swung his head back and forth as he retrieved a bottle of water. He was gulping it down while Sabina arrived in the kitchen again. “Tengo una panacea para la gran cantidad de contradicciones que ocurren hasta ahora en este ciclo educativo.”
Adam finished the bottle and crunched it in his hands. “You don’t need to show off at home because you feel threatened by someone who is just as smart as you are in school… we know that you are smart, so stop showing off.”
Adam retreated out of the room as Sabina started at him, tears almost in her eyes. She shook her head and opened up the freezer. Nikita stood up and closed the door. “What do you think you are doing?”
“Soothing my emotions with ice cream?” Sabina attempted and Nikita shook her head. She opened up the refrigerator and handed her a yogurt. “Maybe there will be ice cream after dinner.”
“Mom….”
“Sabina… I don’t know what has gotten into you… but this isn’t my little girl,” Nikita spoke but Sabina turned and left the room, mumbling about Max Campbell.
“I thought he would be good for her,” Reagan rasped as she frowned. “I truly thought having two... would be good for her.”
“It will be,” Nikita declared. She wasn’t going to let Sabina dictate this. “It is going to have to be. It’s too late to change it now.”
Nikita pulled out the meat to start dinner and looked at Reagan. “Do you know what she said?”
“I have a panacea for the many contradictions that occur so far in this cycle of education,” Reagan replied and Nikita was shocked. “I didn’t know that you knew Spanish that well… it’s one of my worse languages…”
Reagan lifted up her phone and shook it. “I used an app.”
