Cinda watched as Adam ran down the soccer field. She wished that she had been able to see more of his games. It was so much fun to watch how happy Adam was when he was playing soccer. He was happy and free. There was a look on his face of joy that made Cinda think that Adam must have looked like that when he was boy.
There was something about Adam that told her that he didn’t have that kind of freedom growing up. Adam wouldn’t talk about it, but Cinda could sense it and she left it alone. Because she got glimpses of this.
The previous weekend they had gone to her homecoming. The girls at her school were confused with why Cinda didn’t try to get transferred to this school. But Cinda thought that she was lucky. While she was in school, she didn’t have to worry about her boyfriend being in the hallway or pulling her attention away from school. The drama that she had seen way too many of her classmates go thru because they had class projects assigned to their boyfriend or girlfriend while they were fighting just wasn’t part of her life.
It almost meant that Cinda found her time with Adam to be special. He wasn’t always around so when they got to spend time together, it was more than what others in her school had. She didn’t get tired of spending time with Adam because he wasn’t always around. Some thought that it made her odd, but Cinda knew that it was just right.
But watching an actual game was a rare treat for Cinda. Often she was stuck in cheerleading practice or something along those lines. Today the stars had aligned and she got to stop over when practice ended early and the fall weather was nicer than average. She sat on the bleachers, not sure if Adam even knew that she was there. She wasn’t supposed to be there.
Tomorrow night was Adam’s homecoming and he had protested going until he enjoyed Cinda’s homecoming. He wasn’t so thrilled with dressing up, but Cinda knew that he would look great.
“Hi Cinda… I didn’t know that you were coming to the game,” Lisa spoke as she sat down beside Cinda. Cinda had spent more time with Lisa and on a general level liked her. She liked Lisa even more that she got her own steady boyfriend, David, who was a star on the baseball team. “I got out of practice early and knew that they would still be playing. Adam said that this would be their toughest game of the season.”
Lisa nodded her head up and down. “Yeah… and no score… so it’s nerve wrecking.”
Cinda watched as there was a break in the action and she was sure that Adam had looked at her. She gave a small wave to get a nod of Adam’s head in response, confirming that he knew that she was there. Cinda looked at Lisa and sighed. “So, it must have been difficult around the school since they arrested Mr. Domorski.”
Lisa coughed slightly and nodded her head. “I would have been in his class if I was in regular classes. I know a lot of girls… well…”
Cinda winced as the stories that were coming out about this teacher were illicit. “It’s good that The Angel brought his actions to light. No one would have known and it would have been worse.”
Lisa just stared at Cinda and Cinda turned cold. It was a similar look that Adam got when she mentioned The Angel. It was like both of them knew something more but didn’t say anything more. Cinda had pushed Adam in the past about it but had learned to just let it go. She tried not to mention The Angel to Adam because of the reaction and now Cinda knew that she would have to plan on doing the same with Lisa.
“Someone would have come forward… and maybe not so… publically displayed,” Lisa finally responded as she rubbed her hands together. They both then noticed the news crew that wasn’t there for the soccer game, but to talk to the students. It was clear that Lisa wanted them to leave.
The whistle blew and the game started out again. It was getting rough out there and the sun started to drift as it started to drizzle. The other team had larger bodies, but Adam’s teammates were spry and fast.
Then, as in slow motion, one of the larger defenders stepped up in a way to clip Adam’s leg. He flew into the air as his leg stayed behind in ways. Cinda asked and jumped to her feet as Adam crumbled on the ground. She was sure that she could hear his scream of pain as his hand grabbed at his leg and everyone stopped. The trainers and coach were running onto the field.
“I got to call the house… and Nikita…” Lisa spoke as she grabbed her phone. Cinda turned and placed her hand on the phone. “No… Nikita is pregnant and Adam wouldn’t want to just upset her. You call his father first. Let him figure out what to do. Don’t call the house… don’t upset Nikita.”
“She needs to know!”
“Adam’s father can tell her,” Cinda forcefully spoke as she saw the medics coming out onto the field. Cinda started to walk down the bleachers. “I’ll let them know that we are calling his father… That’s what Adam will want.”
Lisa started to nod her head and Cinda knew that she was going to do what she had suggested.
Cinda didn’t understand the relationships that Adam had with his family, particularly with Nikita. Some days he called her mom and other days he called her Nikita. Adam had told her that Nikita wasn’t his biological mother and that was ok. But when you find out that Sabina is, but that they had only gotten married and now are expecting another child, it seemed a bit like a mini soap opera, but Cinda knew that it was more than that. It was complicated.
But Adam was protective of Nikita, more now that she was pregnant. It made some people roll their eyes at Adam. It made Cinda like Adam even more.
He was in so much pain. Even from this distance she could tell that.
“Cinda… Cinda…” Lisa called out as she loudly came down the bleachers. That had been fast and Cinda grimaced. “Please tell me that you talked to his father….”
“He was pulling into the parking lot,” Lisa answered as they both saw Michael jogging in from behind the bleachers and onto the field to his son. “He got done with work… hadn’t seen Adam play…”
Cinda nodded her head and sat down. She wanted to be there for Adam, but his father was there. Cinda knew that this was bad and she rubbed her forehead. She didn’t know when she would see the look of the young Adam playing soccer again.
