“The swelling should come down overnight… and we’ll do the surgery first thing in the morning,” the tall doctor spoke as he looked at Adam and then at Michael. “We’ll do our best to manage the pain for the evening… but unfortunately we can’t let you eat anything. As soon as the swelling is down and I can get in there, the better so I can truly see the full extent of the damage.”
Michael rubbed his hands together as the doctor left the room. He sighed and sat down in the chair next to the bed. Adam wearily turned his head. “What are you doing, dad?”
“Getting ready to stay the night,” Michael declared and Adam struggled to shake his head. “You have to go home to Nikita… tell her what is going on.”
“We don’t fully know…”
“I have at least the ACL tear, Dad. I think they are almost sure that the MCL is blown out too… You have to go tell Nikita now,” Adam firmly declared and Michael leaned forward. “You need me to be here. This is a serious injury.”
“That many athletes have had… Look at Adrian Peterson… Joe Namath… Tom Brady… that one Pittsburgh Penguin had a better year after he had a bad knee injury… Pele had bad knees…” Adam rattled off as he fought the drugs that were keeping the pain away. “Go home to Nikita. She needs to know what is going on.”
Michael leaned back and shook his head.
“You know that she probably has had Jason hack the hospital, right? Do you think we want her making up what is wrong by what she sees on the MRI, dad? You know that she will have Jason and Tom having other specialists looking at those scans… go home,” Adam shifted as he spoke and winced in pain.
Michael glared at Adam. “You can’t move, Adam… that’s why I have to stay.”
Adam looked up at the ceiling and closed his eyes for a moment. “She is pregnant, Dad. I’m a teenager. That baby needs you to go home and take care of Nikita.”
Michael stood up and started to pace the room. “Adam… this is bad…”
“It could have been worse…”
“Adam,” Michael snapped and the door opened. A nurse walked in and smiled gently. “I have some more medicine… it should let him sleep comfortably until the morning.”
“See,” Adam pointed out to his father. Michael sighed and rubbed at his neck. The nurse sighed. “I tried to tell that woman out there that too… but she didn’t believe me.”
“Woman?” Michael felt hollow as he said it. He knew right then who was out there had long blonde hair and shouldn’t have been there.
“I told you,” Adam sing-songed as the nurse injected the medicine into his IV. “Go home.”
“She looked pretty tired… and wouldn’t take any food even with the baby…” the nurse added and Michael grunted. Now he was mad slightly that Nikita didn’t listen to him.
Michael kissed Adam’s head and the nurse smiled at him. “I have all of your contact information and will call you if anything changes and once we have a time for the surgery. I don’t have that many patients tonight and I’ll check on him often, although I believe Adam will sleep most of the night.”
“Go,” Adam sleepily urged his father as he turned his head away from him, already asleep. Michael pressed his lips together and walked out into the hallway. The nurse had followed and pointed to the waiting room around the corner. “Visiting hours just ended… she is alone right now.”
Michael rubbed his hands across his face, suddenly tired and hungry. He walked down the hallway and peered in to see Nikita sitting on the edge of the couch, twisting her hands back and forth. She looked so uncomfortable and so worried. “Kita… I told you that I would call you when I had all the details.”
“He needs surgery,” Nikita spoke and Michael nodded his head as he walked into the room. He settled on the couch and pulled Nikita back off of the edge. “Yeah… and I’m sure that you already knew that from Jason.”
“I was fine… waiting… not even asking Jason… for information… until I saw it on television,” Nikita explained but it only served to confuse Michael. “Television?”
“They didn’t know that they got the injury on the screen… they were interviewing students about Mr. Domorski… and it was in the background,” Nikita spoke as she started to twist her hands again. “Is it all three ligaments in the knee?”
“The ACL and maybe the MCL…” Michael answered at he twisted his head. “How… did you… get Jason…”
“I was in Section, Michael…” Nikita hauntingly spoke as she turned pale. “The first… trainee that I knew who looked like that during training… was cancelled…”
Michael knew of the common practice and took Nikita’s hands. “You can’t think like that.”
“I wasn’t… until I saw…” Nikita shook her head. “Michael… do you know how many trainees hurt their knees just a little bit or like that? There were ten.”
Michael tried to wrap Nikita closer to him but she pushed him away. “I wouldn’t do that… when I was Operations… I found something… at least… I tried…”
“Kita…”
“I... the one… I couldn’t do anything about… they had tried other positions… and they would have never made it out of training. Madeline would have…” Nikita drifted off and closed her eyes. “I couldn’t wait at home… because I kept thinking about that… about Madeline just cancelling good people… and I knew that Adam was safe… but I couldn’t wait there any longer.”
“Well, Adam is going to have surgery tomorrow morning if the swelling has gone down… and for the night, he’ll be asleep,” Michael informed Nikita as he was now able to get his arms around her a bit more. “They told me to go home.”
“We should stay,” Nikita announced and Michael was struck with shame of what he had done to Adam. He was fighting his son to stay and now he was in the boat of having to talk Nikita into going home much like his son had done to him just moments ago. “I’m hungry, Kita… have you eaten yet?”
Nikita shook her head. “Not hungry… and the food here… no…”
“Then we’ll stop at Denny’s or something… and then go home as directed by the staff here, and by Adam,” Michael spoke as he stood up and took Nikita’s hands so that she stood up. Nikita looked around and shivered. “Someone should stay.”
“You need to eat… I need to eat… and we can get some sleep and then be here for when Adam goes into surgery,” Michael instructed Nikita with gentle but firm words as he started to walk with her. Nikita blinked her eyes. “It’s not fair to Adam, Michael.”
“I know,” Michael paused to wrap his arms around his wife as she started to cry into his shoulder. She hated that Adam was in pain and Michael had felt that pain too. But for Nikita was overwhelming. Michael held her for a long time and then pulled away to wipe at the tears. “He is going to bounce back, Kita.”
“It’s not going to be easy…”
“One thing at a time, ok?” Michael whispered as he leaned into her and kissed her cheeks. “Ok?”
Nikita barely nodded her head but Michael knew that she wasn’t going to be ok until she saw Adam. She was still so pale and scared. He hoped that he would be able to get Nikita to eat something and then hopefully she would sleep.
But now he knew that he had more than Adam to worry about right now.
