“I thought that you would like these a bit better,” Mick declared as he looked at the shiny black crutches he had brought Adam. Adam grinned and nodded his head. “Better than what Cinda was thinking of doing to them…”
“She is a nice girl,” Mick stated as he sat down and Adam turned his head. “That isn’t the only reason you are here today…. To bring me the crutches… to chat like a friend.”
“I knew that you were getting released from this place today and I wanted to stop by… talk to you man to man… I know how hard it is to recover from injuries, Adam,” Mick commented honestly. He then leaned forward and shrugged his shoulders. “And your father may have asked me to fill in the time for a bit this morning.”
“I knew that you were coerced to coming,” Adam groaned as he leaned his head back. “I can’t wait to be home… and to get back to school.”
“School? Seriously. You should do some school from home… what is it, cyber school?” Mick suggested and Adam laughed. “First… I need to see my friends in person… and second, do you think that my father or Nikita could trust me not to hack into the cyber school software?”
“Jason could make sure…”
“And so could Nikita,” Adam pointed out as he was always surprised how everyone just forgot how good Nikita was with the computers, still having Jason chasing his tail on some things that she had set up. “I want to be in school… and I’m going stir crazy already here.”
“Oh, it would be different when you are at home… much different than the hospital…”
“Ah, Nikita and my friends,” Adam shook his head slightly from side to side. “Is that why you had to come? Something wrong with Nikita?”
Mick shrugged his shoulders. “I know that she has had a couple bad nights.” That was all that Mick knew at this point.
“So she is with Beatrice?”
“Adam…”
“So she went to the doctor… that Keane guy… which means it’s about the baby…” Adam started to connect dots.
“Adam Pomeroy,” Ellie chided from the doorway. “Let them have their own business.”
“I’ve been a bit bored. I wanted to go home yesterday,” Adam rolled his head and looked at Ellie. “Are you letting me go home today?”
“Oh yes,” Ellie nodded her head as she showed the papers. “I could end up with a nurses’ strike if I don’t get you out today.”
“I haven’t been that bad,” Adam protested and Mick chuckled as he stood up. “I think this is a conversation between patient and doctor.”
“Here trying to give Adam sage advice?”
“He wouldn’t let me talk about that,” Mick shook his head from side to side. “I have to get out of here either way… I have to get over to the one showroom that wants me to design a room for them… promote my business and all.”
Adam watched as Mick left the room and Ellie closed the door. He swallowed and pushed up in the bed. “Please, Ellie… I just want to go home… and get back to school tomorrow.”
“You aren’t serious,” Ellie dropped the chart down on the foot of the bed. “You should wait until next week.”
“I’ve already missed enough school,” Adam shook his head from side to side. “And you know the reason why the nurses hated me was because I have that crazy inverse reaction to the pain medication… so keeping me at home is actually dangerous to me.”
Ellie knew that Adam was speaking the truth there and that little detail was liable to drive everyone nuts. She rolled her shoulders back and swallowed. “You know, I don’t like to pull this one out… because I don’t believe in using guilt… but the first day a child spends back in school after surgery… especially when they have to use crutches can be very stressful for the parents… and I don’t think either your father or Nikita are ready to face that tomorrow.”
“I’m not waiting five days to go back.”
Ellie understood what Adam was going thru. He was a teenager and had been stuck in the hospital for a couple days longer than they had first expected because of timing and some extra swelling that had delayed the surgery by a day. Then most of his friends, except for Cinda, would call but wouldn’t come to the hospital to visit.
Plus she knew that Adam could sense that things weren’t going so easily for Nikita. They all tried to protect Adam from that, but the boy knew Nikita well.
“Maybe you should think of it as some time to spend with Nikita. You won’t get many more of those,” Ellie spoke with a slight shrug of her shoulders. She wasn’t sure if it was a good approach, but she watched as Adam slumped a bit and he sighed. “Walter told me about what they used to do with trainees who got hurt like I did.”
“Not all of them,” Ellie shook her head and Adam nodded his head. “At least not once Nikita was in power.”
“You can understand how unexpected things can just… bring back bad memories, Adam.”
Shifted in the bed and grabbing for the crutches, Adam slipped onto the ground. “Come on… I want to take a walk… I need out of this room…”
Ellie stood up and opened the door. “You have nothing to do with what is going on.”
“I know that,” Adam confirmed as he hopped very effectively on the crutches. “And you are getting me a pop out of the vending machine. It’s been too long since I had a pop.”
“It was last night… at eleven. When Jason snuck it in,” Ellie shrugged her shoulders. Adam narrowed his eyes and shook it from side to side. “Yeah… he snuck in…”
“He had to stop a hacker… it was his job as The Angel last night to protect the hospital,” Ellie deadpanned as she started down the hallway. Adam groaned and followed behind. He got a stupid pop last night when Jason cut off his access to the networks.
