“You gave those senior players at least four chances to score. You should have scored, Adam,” Gretchen shook her head as she sat on the stairs just outside of the gym with Adam, rehashing the championship game with him that the soccer team had lost by not scoring a goal.

“Gretchen, you knew how bad it was in those halls last week when they thought I was hamming it up in the playoff game… They were right. The seniors needed the chance to be the stars,” Adam softly spoke as he didn’t want to think about this any longer. It was hard for him to pass, but he could hear the voices in the hallway while he was out in that field.

And Lisa sitting with them at the field.

“I know… but you could have won that game,” Gretchen spoke as she took Adam’s hand. Adam shrugged his shoulders. “I don’t know if this team sports thing… is my thing.”

“Now that is just crazy,” Gretchen shook her head as she let go over Adam’s hand.

“Crazy? Is the nerd saying that he is crazy now?” Robbie asked from behind Adam. Adam got up to his feet and turned around. “Robbie… I just wanted to spend some time with Gretchen before going home for the weekend.”

“I’m going to spend the weekend trying to find out why you had to make the entire team look like fools today,” Robbie declared as he stepped forward and separated Adam from Gretchen as other members of the football team approached to watch Robbie. Adam didn’t dare point out that the football team didn’t even have a winning record this year.

“I thought that the seniors should have the opportunity. That’s what you were telling me to do,” Adam answered and Robbie turned away. He smiled at Gretchen. “Do you think that language nerd should have scored a goal today?”

Gretchen pressed her mouth closed and didn’t respond. Robbie chuckled. “You made her silent, soccer nerd.”

“Look… I don’t want any problems,” Adam shook his head as he sighed and rubbed at his elbow. He was outnumbered and Adam knew that. But Gretchen was around and Lisa was in sight also.

“What do you see in this wimpy boy, Gretchen?” Robbie asked as he shook his head back and forth. “He doesn’t want any problems.”

“Just go home, Robbie,” Gretchen spoke and Robbie turned to push Adam backwards. “I think I’m not as dangerous as your teammates... that’s why you are out here… when they all left out the other door… because they all hate you, Adam.”

Catching his balance, Adam shook his head. “I’m going home.”

“Perfect… and I’ll take Gretchen home…”

“Robbie,” Lisa called out as he pulled at Gretchen’s arm. Adam swallowed and glared at Lisa. He didn’t need her.

“Leave Gretchen alone.”

“It’s not like you are going to make me,” Robbie laughed and Adam felt like he was seeing a red flag being waved in front of him to charge. Adam clenched his fists, knowing that he had to quell the emotional reaction to make good decisions right now.

“I thought we were going out tonight, Robbie,” Lisa spoke as she stepped forward. Adam watched as Robbie pushed Lisa away. “Darling… I’m not a one girl kind of man… but I wouldn’t mind having you two together…”

One of the football players took Lisa’s arms as they all laughed at Robbie’s words. Adam stepped forward and pushed Robbie’s hand off of Gretchen. “Leave the girls out of this, Robbie. They didn’t come here to get manhandled by you.”

“Oh… did you decide to be a boy today? It sounds like you may have tried to grow a set… oh… poor sad nerd…” Robbie harassed and that was it.

Adam quickly moved and successfully got Gretchen further away from Robbie as he attacked the boy. For those first moments of surprise, Adam had the upper hand while almost no one knew what was going on.

But Adam was well outnumbered.

Adam realized that he was in big trouble when his back hit the metal railing of the stairs. He twisted away and stepped to the side to find two linebackers stepping forward, cracking their knuckles. Adam gasped as he then felt Robbie turning him around. Adam saw the blood from the broken nose that he gave Robbie before he was restrained from behind so Robbie could line up a blistering wicked right-hook.

“Stop!” Gretchen was crying as she was being held back and she glared at Lisa who was just staring at what was going on. “Stop it! He just wanted to let the seniors win the game, Robbie…. That’s what you told him to do!”

“Shut up!” Robbie hissed as he shook his head and kicked at Adam’s leg. Adam grimaced but he didn’t shout out. He still was trying to figure out how to break free without tapping into the skills that he knew skills that no boy his age should know.

His father wouldn’t want him to attack back right now. It was about picking the right battles and this wasn’t one. Adam had gotten Gretchen out of harm’s way so a beating at these thugs was going to hurt, but it was the right thing to do.

“Robbie, that’s enough,” Lisa shouted out as Adam’s head hung down.

But Robbie snorted and continued.

It was the noise that brought some of the soccer players over. Robbie tossed his hands up in the air as he kicked Adam back against the stairs before the players too close. “I took care of your loose link boys… you should have taken care of this… kept him in line better…”

Adam felt his head pounding as he now felt the pain washing over his body. He turned to the side and spat blood out of his mouth. The world was throbbing in his vision and he tried to shake the cobwebs out of his head.

“Adam!” Gretchen cried out as she moved to his side. “They are going to call for an ambulance…”

“No… I just want to go home…” Adam shook his head as he pushed his arms out to straighten them and to get back up. “Home…”

“Look man… that shouldn’t have happened…” said Blake, the junior who was the goalie who gave up the only goal of the game as he bent down and placed a hand on Adam’s shoulder, keeping him down. “Let’s get the paramedics to help you…”

“I’m fine…” Adam tried to push Blake away from him but the world spun and he almost felt sick. That was when Adam realized that he wasn’t really hearing that well. He was sure that he heard someone say that he must have a concussion.

Surrendering to stay down, Adam closed his eyes for a moment as he realized that he probably should have used some of those things his father taught him in this case.
