Nikita tightened her hands and then released them. She was acutely aware that Erica was late. She tried not to be nervous or show her frustration, but Nikita was tired. And she wanted to be home with her daughter who had kissed her goodbye before going to school like nothing had happened the previous day.

“Michael…” Nikita spoke softly as she leaned back on the bench and tried to ease the tense muscles in her neck. She had been thankful that Michael and Davenport had remained silent for the past hour, allowing her to just wait. “Do you remember how hard it was when you were first out?”

“It was hard,” Michael replied and Nikita looked to the other side, seeing nothing like Erica.

“It was hard... when I was out… always looking over… my shoulder… not knowing where Section…”

“Well, there is no Section,” Davenport pointed out as he was annoyed with this delay.

“We know that,” Nikita whispered and didn’t say anything more. They all had their own theories and Tom would neither confirm nor deny their theories. Nikita for one believed that an official governmental organization, or several governmental organizations, kept stories of Section alive, and used it against the terrorist organizations. It wasn’t like anyone released a public story saying that Section was closed down.

Section was still feared.

“I’ll wait as long as you want to stay there, Kita,” Michael replied. “Do you want some company?”

Nikita was about to respond that she wanted to stay this way when Davenport cleared his throat. “I think she is approaching.”

Nikita didn’t move her head. She swallowed and wondered why there was delay. “From the playground?”

“Yes,” Davenport stuttered. “She doesn’t look too good.”

“Injured?” Nikita inquired as her heart started to race, worried that Erica and Logan had gotten caught back up in the dark side of society. She would be heartbroken if that had happened.

“No, I don’t think so. But sick,” Davenport reported with a slow response. Nikita couldn’t help it. She had to see. She turned her head to the side and saw the woman that Davenport had identified. At first Nikita didn’t want to believe that it was Erica. She looked pale, dull, and sullen. Even on her worse days in Section, Erica had a shine to her and that was gone.

Something was very wrong.

The woman looked at Nikita and blinked. Clearly she didn’t expect to see Nikita in the way that she was. She turned her head around and tried to see if there were others around. She continued to walk and paused in front of Nikita. “Who do you have here?”

“Section is gone. Just a few to make sure that I was safe,” Nikita replied back and Erica flinched. “Gone?”

“A long story. Not for now. But they can’t be a danger to you… or if you think they are… it’s not the Section you know,” Nikita spoke as she didn’t move while she studied Erica, trying to figure out what was going on. “Erica… where is Logan?”

The woman closed her eyes and couldn’t hide her anguish. She moved to the empty part of the bench and carefully sat down. “He… he’s gone…”

“Gone?”

“Died…” Erica rasped as she lifted a boney hand to her eyes. “He was buying me flowers… as he did every Friday… on his way home from the day that we found out that I was pregnant… to make me happy… he bought me flowers… he said that mothers to be needed flowers… and it was a freak accident… a truck lost its brakes… and couldn’t stop…”

Nikita covered her mouth as her body responded to this story. There was no way that it was true. Nikita reached for Erica, but she pulled away. “Things… went bad… from there… and that’s why I need you…”

“Need me?”

“If you are here… you’ll help me,” Erica looked at Nikita. Davenport was chattering in the background to have Jason start looking for information on Logan and Michael was quiet. But Nikita knew that this was the truth. “Yes.”

Erica turned her head away and seemed to be struggling to breathe. She looked at the trees and then looked at Nikita. “If Section… is gone… you got out too?”

“The good got out,” Nikita nodded her head up and down. Erica blinked her eyes. “You are with Michael?”

“She did know,” Michael whispered and Nikita nodded her head. “I didn’t make it easy to make it back to him… but yes… he saved me after I got out, Erica.”

“You’ll be able to take Tom,” Erica sighed as she slumped against the bench. She looked at Nikita. “I had wanted someone… who knew both of us…”

“Tom?” Nikita inquired.

“She was pregnant when Logan died, Kita,” Michael whispered and Nikita closed her eyes. “Why do you need me to take your child?”

“Can’t you tell?” Erica looked at her and groaned now in pain. “I’m dying… and it won’t be long.”

“Where is the boy now?” Davenport inquired and Nikita started to hear Michael and Davenport trying to figure out that while she was stunned with what Erica wanted her to do and why. “I’m sure that you can get better, Erica. I can help out…”

“Its inoperable cancer,” Erica shook her head. “I had found a lump… the Monday before… and they did a test… and then Logan…” Erica closed her eyes and pressed a hand to her chest. “They wanted me to give up the baby… but I couldn’t… because that was all that was left of Logan… they said that I could die before he arrived… but I had to give the baby a chance…”

“Where is the baby?” Michael asked and Nikita stiffened. That wasn’t the question that Erica was ready to answer. “Why me?”

“You got us out… you knew the good things about us… and I don’t want him to go into the system…” Erica explained as she had no idea how that was going to hurt Nikita. She winced as she could almost feel the flash back to giving Sabina to Walter to get out of Section. But this wasn’t about her right now. This was about Erica.

“I… I started to have… seizures… they forced me into the hospital… and after Tom was born… they were going to put him right into the system… I had no one… no friends… no family… no one to take Tom…” Erica stopped and gasped for air. “I had to sneak us out…”

Nikita tensed and swallowed. “Erica…”

“A month… that’s all the time that I’ve had with my son… and I know that it is dangerous…. I can’t drive… I can die at any moment… the cancer is everywhere… it is eating away at me… and I know that as soon as I get Tom to you… it won’t be long… until I’m with Logan again,” Erica moved closer to Nikita. “I don’t have time… for you to think that this isn’t happening….”

Nikita looked at her eyes and could tell that Erica was telling the truth and that she was fine with it, if she could have Nikita take Tom.

“Kita… we have to figure this out…” Michael whispered and Nikita pulled the device out of her ear.

“I can’t take your son,” Nikita rasped as she knew that she couldn’t do it. While she knew that Sabina would be so happy and would act like it was her brother, Nikita couldn’t take Erica’s and Logan’s child. If she was going to have a child, it was going to be Michael’s child. “And I know that you don’t have the time to hear why… so I ask you to know that I can’t because it wouldn’t be fair to him…”

Erica looked at Nikita and sighed. “You’re a mother too.”

Nikita pressed her lips together and nodded her head.

“Then find him… a place… somewhere... so that you can tell him about me… and Logan… because you are the only tie to us… that will be alive…” Erica pleaded as she gasped and her eyes rolled back. Nikita slipped her ear piece back in, knowing that she needed to talk to Michael and Davenport.

“Michael…” Nikita called out as Erica was in a seizure. Nikita looked around and saw that there was no one there and she was alone with Erica.

“Keep her on the bench… if possible…” Michael directed as she could tell that he was moving. But he wasn’t telling Nikita something that she didn’t know. She eased closer and knew that she was going to have to do as Erica requested. She had no other options.

“I’m moving the van closer…” Davenport reported and Nikita pulled the ear piece out again. She didn’t need to know every single move. She fretted for a moment but saw that the seizure was ending as quickly as it started. “Erica?”

Erica nodded her head as she swallowed slowly. “I don’t have much time.”

“Where is your son? Where is Tom?” Nikita inquired as she was afraid of what would happen if something happened to Erica before Nikita knew.

“With a doctor… well, he was a doctor before he immigrated into the States… he is going… to help me,” Erica rasped as she looked at Nikita, not hiding her plans at all.

Nikita felt Michael pulling up to a jog and she turned her head to look at him. “Michael… I don’t know if you know Erica.”

“In passing,” Michael spoke as he nodded his head up and down.

“Take me to Tom… and then we’ll talk.”

“You aren’t going to change my plans,” Erica warned and Nikita nodded her head up and down. It was very clear that Erica had made her mind up and was at peace with it.
