Nikita tiptoed into the bathroom and rubbed at her face. She knew that she wasn’t going to sleep well tonight. It wasn’t that she was scared of marrying Michael. Her mind knew that it was a formality that everyone wanted them to do and that on some level she knew that it would matter. But she also knew that she had such mixed feelings that she would have been even more scared had she been able to sleep like a baby.

Nikita blinked her eyes and she saw it. There was nothing that she could do but she sat down on the closed toilet and held her head.

”Do you have any witnesses?” the justice asked as he smiled at Nikita. She looked at Helmut and the back to the justice. “We were on a tight schedule.”

“My bride couldn’t wait another moment until she was Mrs. Volkner,” Helmut replied with a twinkle in his eye that seemed to put the justice at peace with the couple in front of them. Nikita forced a smile and tried to play along with Helmut although her head was battling with her.

Section had set this up!

“Let me get my assistant,” the justice replied as if it was common for couples to arrive in the middle of the night for a rushed ceremony, but yet, come with the proper attire. Nikita watched as he left the room and Nikita turned to glare at Helmut. “Why don’t we just tell him I’m in the family way?”

“Now that is an idea that I didn’t think of,” Helmut replied back with a chuckle. He moved closer and brushed Nikita’s brow. “You can’t wait for the wedding night, darling.”

“Nikita,” Nikita snapped as she pushed her hand through her hair and swallowed hard. “And I don’t know why you wanted to rush this. We could have waited until the morning… or better yet, the weekend.”

“I’ve learned it’s not wise to wait,” Helmut replied back as he wrapped his arms around Nikita as the door opened again and the justice come into the room, clearing his throat with an older woman behind him. “Ah… I have a witness now.”

“Thank goodness… my bride was just starting to get queasy… it’s probably time to get this ceremony started… before it becomes morning.”

“Kita?” Michael spoke gently as he walked into the bathroom. She jerked her head up and swallowed hard. “I’m not scared, Michael… I don’t understand why…”

“You’ve talked about this a lot with Beatrice, Kita,” Michael whispered as he pulled Nikita up into his arms. “You can’t control the flashes… okay?”

Nikita meekly nodded her head but Michael could tell that she didn’t completely believe it.

“I know that this flash has nothing to do with us getting married… it might be about marriage… but I know that you are secure and ready to marry me… as secure as I am to marry you, Kita,” Michael spoke as he turned Nikita towards their bed. He rubbed her chilly arms and kissed her neck. “I can’t wait to walk down the aisle with you.”

Nikita flinched and shook her head, squeezed her eyes shut tightly. “Michael… please… don’t talk about it… please…”

Nikita had found it hard that Helmut made her get married twice, one for his own feelings and once for what would get shared with others, especially Section. That minister looked at them and Nikita wanted to stop it right now. “Do you, Helmut Volker, take this woman, Anna Gunther to be your lawfully wedded wife, to love honor and cherish so long as you both shall live?”

“I do,” Helmut replied with a grin of satisfaction on his face.

Nikita reminded herself that she wasn’t marrying Helmut Volker – Anna Gunther was. But it didn’t change the fact. And there was no Michael Samuelle to save her from these moments.

“And do you, Anna Gunther, take this man, Helmut Volker, to be your lawfully wedded husband, to love honor and cherish until death do you part?” the ministered inquired.

“I do,” Nikita responded back quickly as she couldn’t allow herself to think about what she was saying. She was Anna and Anna wouldn’t hesitate. But inside her mind was running as far away from this as possible.

She never wanted to fall in love. Not after what her mother had put her thru. Nikita definitely didn’t want to be married to anyone. To be a wife – to be possibly asked to love, cherish and obey? That wasn’t in Nikita’s thoughts of being part of her life. The fact that Michael had in the past quipped things to this line that her only job was to obey him, always made her stomach flip. Now she was in a wedding ceremony with Helmut Volker.

“Then by the power vested in me, I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss the bride,” the minister spoke and Nikita tilted her head, hoping for just a small kiss but that wasn’t Helmut’s style. She endured the deep and passionate kiss, giving him something back because that was what Anna would do.

And now she was Anna Volker.

Michael stayed quiet as he barely got Nikita to sit down on the bed. She rubbed her eyes and shook her head. “Michael… I was fine… but this… shakes me.”

“You can’t let the memories win,” Michael fretted as he stroked Nikita’s hair out of her face. She got up to her feet. “They aren’t.”

“O…kay…” Michael drawled out as he looked at Nikita as she was still shaking as she stood there. She placed her hand on her hip and stared at Michael. “We are getting married tomorrow… no matter how many of these flashes I have.”

Michael nodded his head up and down as he liked the sound of it but he surely hoped that they would end soon. Maybe this was just something that had to get out of Nikita’s system.

Nikita paced slightly from side to side. “You know… I have to change something… I’m just setting myself up for another one… so I’m going to go downstairs… maybe have some warm milk or something,” Nikita declared and Michael sighed. “Do you want some company?”

“I’m fine,” Nikita replied as she turned and left the room.

Nikita felt shaky about going downstairs and it didn’t make sense. She had done this in the past. There were times that the flashes were happening so frequently that it was being caused because she didn’t do anything to change the situation. She was changing the situation, but her body was still tingling as her mind was at war.

Nikita got to the refrigerator and was pulling the milk out when she gasped and groaned, more upset about the inability to stop it than anything.

The water was not warm enough as it washed down from the shower head. She adjusted the heat so that it would beat against her body, trying to take the feeling of that satin white dress off of her body. Nikita leaned her face up into the stream of water for a long time before starting to scrub the feeling away.

She was rinsing her head as the shower door opened. Helmut stood there as he grinned. “Hello, wife.”

Nikita covered her chest and glared at him. “What are you doing in here?”

“Thought we’d get a head start,” Helmut grinned back as he reached for Nikita as he was naked and now stepping into the water. Nikita turned to the side and spun until she was at the door. “Don’t ever do this again to me.”

Nikita jumped out of the shower and pulled at the large heated towel off of the rack and quickly wrapped it around her body. She heard the water being turned off in the shower and she grabbed the other towel off of the rack as Helmut followed her out of the shower. “Cover up.”

“Nikita… come on…” Helmut spoke as he tried to touch her, but she pushed the towel out and stared at her hand as it held onto the towel. “Cover yourself up.”

Nikita stepped out of the bathroom and into the bedroom of the hotel suite that they were sharing on this wedding night. She quickly went to the suit case and pulled out the underwear and stepped into them before pulling a long sweater down over her body even as Helmut strutted into the bedroom with the towel around his waist. “What’s going on?”

Nikita looked at him and sat down on the bed. “Please, Helmut… things have happened fast and I don’t think you know me that well.”

“We’ve had some fun… we’ve enjoyed each other’s company… I thought we were going to partake in some… biblical action,” Helmut shrugged his shoulders slightly. “That’s what married couples do.”

Nikita rubbed her neck and she worried. She may have to do this for the mission.

“Something happened to you,” Helmut spoke gently as he realized that she had wiped a tear away from her cheek. Nikita turned and looked at him. “An abused woman doesn’t necessarily like to talk about what has been done to her.”

Helmut watched as Nikita walked to the dresser and started to unpack her bag. He turned and pulled on a pair of jeans and dropped the towel to the floor. “I’m sorry… I didn’t know.”

“I didn’t tell you,” Nikita turned and looked at Helmut. “And I might be overreacting…. I know what today was…”

“We can wait,” Helmut replied as he moved closer to Nikita. He stroked her hair back much like Michael would do and Nikita silently cursed that she was thinking about Michael. “I’m sorry, Helmut… maybe this wasn’t the best thing…”

“It was right,” Helmut replied back and Nikita could see that he didn’t really believe his words, but he was going to honor them for now. “Let me order some room service…”

“Let me take that, Kita,” Michael gently spoke from behind her, his arms wrapping around her to take the container of milk that threatened to either fall out of her hands that were shaking so badly or at least spill from the shaking. Michael took the container and placed it back in the refrigerator before closing the door. “We are going to go into the living room… and we’ll just sit on the couch, ok?”

Nikita nodded her head as she slumped some into Michael’s embrace. She took deep breathes as Michael got them into the living room without turning on any lights. She wrapped her arms around Michael and leaned her head down so that her ear was pressing to his chest.

He worried that they should talk about what was plaguing her but feeling Nikita pressed against his chest, Michael stopped his words. He just wrapped Nikita up as close as he could to her and held onto her.

And finally, over time, they both drifted to sleep.
