Ellie glanced from the monitors and back down to the patient in the bed. He should be waking up any moment now and she waited patiently as they all had. For more than eight days.

His eyes moved first and Ellie sighed with that movement. It was always a doctor’s fear that their hopes of a patient waking up wouldn’t occur. It had happened a couple times to patients that Ellie had and it had been scary. She never had to deal with anything like that in Section because Section didn’t wait. But it was terrifying to face a family waiting for someone that they loved to wake up. To find out that they wouldn’t wake up was worse.

“Hi, Mick,” Ellie forced a smile as she saw his eyes focus for a moment and then glaze over. She felt Tom and Laura move to the bedside and she shook them off. It would do Mick no good to rush him right now. “Good morning, Mick…”

“Ow…” Mick whispered and Ellie nodded her head. “You’ve been in a bad accident…. You are going to feel some pain, Mick.”

Mick focused on her and Ellie felt her nerves jump. She swallowed hard. “Who are you?”

“I’m your friend, Mick,” Ellie spoke again slowly. “I’m Dr. Ellie Hlad… you know me from back home.”

“No,” Mick whispered as he winced while trying to shake his head.

Ellie reached out and took his hand. “You were in a car accident… you were kept in a coma so some of your injuries could heal… you want to be careful moving your head. You had a pretty bad hit to your head, but we think that is all going to heal up.”

Mick closed his eyes and Ellie paused. He opened them again and whispered once more. “Ow...”

“We are going to get you something more for the pain, Mick. But we are also going to get you home,” Ellie spoke as she looked over at the couple who were frowning with displeasure over the fact that Mick didn’t seem to know her.

“Where am I?”

“You are in the hospital…” Ellie answered and Mick chuckled slightly before wincing with more pain. “I figured that with the white walls and nasty Lysol smell.”

“You are in Salt Lake City, “ Ellie supplied and he was confused again. Mick slowly turned his head and studied Ellie. “In the States?”

“Yes, in the United States,” Ellie nodded her head slowly up and down.

“I don’t remember… coming here…” Mick rasped and Ellie rolled her shoulders back. “That is normal for the trauma that you have experienced… along with your head injury… the surgeons had to remove your spleen… and had a pretty nasty gash on your liver that they had to repair.”

“Will I be able to drink?” Mick asked and Ellie laughed slightly. He still had his humor. “Give it some time, Mick. But I think you’ll be able to drink in moderation.”

Mick was hazy and Ellie exhaled. “You probably don’t remember things clearly right now because of the medicine, Mick. But we are going to get you home from Salt Lake City… and we are going to take care of you.”

“We?” Mick inquired and Laura stepped forward. “Hi, Mick… It’s Laura. I’m here with Tom to get you home. Everyone is waiting.”

Mick blinked his eyes and Ellie looked over her shoulder to the nurse who was waiting with the medicine. She nodded her head as the nurse stepped forward, Mick bewildered with these people in front of him.

“Come on,” Ellie guided Laura and Tom out of the room. “This is very normal for what he has gone thru.”

“He didn’t know us,” Laura hissed and Ellie nodded her head. “He has been thru a lot… and he is still filled with a lot of medicine… it will get better.”

“But?” Tom asked and Ellie tilted her head to the side. She had been over this with Tom and Laura when they flew out two days ago. “He may never remember the accident… and he may never remember anything that happened the day of the accident. But everyone is sure that he will recover almost everything else.”

“But it could be dangerous if he remembers the wrong things at the wrong time,” Tom warned and Ellie nodded her head. “And that is why we need to get him home.”

“Already?” Laura looked into the room. “He needs a couple more days… and if you aren’t finding anything about what he was doing here… you should just go home and help out there.”

“We have active leads in that area,” Laura pointed out to Tom and Tom frowned. “Mick was here for a reason, Laura.”

“I know… but we can’t find out what he was doing… and where he was… he could have been just driving thru town,” Laura shook her head from side to side. “And I know that we are going to regret leaving her… but what can we do but go back?”

Tom sighed and rubbed her arms. She didn’t know Mick that much but she was worried about him. Tom wrapped an arm around her. “I want to try for one more day to find out what he was doing… we are missing something.”

“Obviously we are missing something,” Laura’s voice broke and Ellie cleared her throat. “Look… he needs his rest and you two should just go. They’ll probably keep him heavily sedated the rest of tonight… and slightly wean him off tomorrow… I’m hoping that we can start talking about a medical transport back home tomorrow… and that will probably take at least a day to arrange.”

Laura looked at Ellie and frowned. “You didn’t even tell him about his leg.”

“He didn’t feel his leg. That isn’t giving him any pain right now,” Ellie reported and Laura rubbed at her head. “This is a mess.”

“We have a day, Laura… maybe we can find something. At least figure out if he was working in town. We’ve been here mostly…” Tom suggested and Laura nodded her head. “Ok… we’ll go and try to figure this out… but I don’t think he was using the name that was found on him…”

“Oh, that is pretty clear,” Tom chuckled. “Tom Jones… seriously… Mick has a sense of humor that is getting him into trouble at times.”
