”Sugar… why didn’t you tell me? A long time ago!” Walter exclaimed as Nikita rode through the contraction and looked up at Walter. “I need to deliver this baby now, Walter.”
“Hell, Sugar… we should go to medical! I’m not a doctor! What if something…”
“No one will know. Ever,” Nikita hissed as she pushed her body up and looked at Walter. “You need to be ready to get this baby, Walter. I’m pushing…”
“Wait! You don’t know if that is right…”
“I’ve been in labor for almost a whole day, Walter.”
“You were running missions,” Walter pointed out and he tilted his head to the side. “No…”
“I only have a couple hours to have this baby, have you get it out of here, and be back to normal for a meeting with The Centre…. Now get ready to deliver this baby, Walter,” Nikita commanded as the pains washed over her body and Nikita started to bare down. It was with Nikita’s determination to start pushing that had Walter jump to action. When Nikita was determined, she could do anything.
“Oh… it’s crowning, Sugar… you are having a baby….” Walter whispered gently. He jerked his head up and looked at Nikita. “Please tell me that it is absolutely Michael’s and you didn’t just say that…”
“Walter,” Nikita looked at him with a face that she hoped told him that the only person she would ever think of having a child with in this situation was Michael. She would only risk her entire life in bringing a life into the world because it was Michael’s child.
Moments later, Walter lifted the baby up with tears in his eyes. “Sugar… it’s a girl… it’s a girl…”
Nikita stumbled into the bathroom as she was hot and cold at the same time. She had just gotten off of the phone with Beatrice as she was home and waiting for Michael to process the DNA tests as quickly as he could. She had been fighting with Michael since she left that bathroom in the hotel room finding that he hadn’t even started to pack to just moments ago when he finally left to start the tests.
She didn’t understand why Michael was dragging his feet. Well, she knew what his reason was – that they should find another way for them to claim April – but it wasn’t the rational thing to do in her mind.
Michael knew that she was having flash backs and when those PTSD moments happened, Michael didn’t fight with her afterwards, but only until she was able to get past those moments. Then he started to outline other ways for them to go to April with Nikita coming forward as her mother. But Nikita refused steadfastly to listen and thankfully no one else jumped in with Michael.
Nikita wasn’t about to tell Michael that her heart wanted to scream out that she was the girl’s mother as it would give Michael even more to use to make his argument stronger and it was still tempting to think that they could work.
But Nikita felt the best thing she could do as a mother would be to put her child’s needs first. April needed out of where she was and she needed a family. Nikita could be in that family without being the mother of record. That was fine because that was what April needed.
Nikita closed her eyes as she tried to override what her body wanted. But deep down she knew that she wasn’t going to win.
“Kita…” Michael spoke as he stood in the door frame. She jerked her head up to look at the mirror behind the mantel and to Michael’s reflection. “She is dead, right?”
“No,” Michael shook his head as he stepped forward. Just as quick, Nikita whipped around and glared at him. “Something bad is going on with her.”
Michael stopped as his chest ached. It was so much easier hearing it from Mick. This was draining his resolve to be strong right now. He wanted to be strong for Nikita, but he feared that being strong would give Nikita the wrong message. “It could be.”
Nikita shook her head negatively as she looked at Michael. She walked away from him and sat down on the edge of the couch. “Is she sick? Hurt?”
“I… Kita… I don’t know…”
“Did someone find out about her? Did they find out that I had a daughter? I was careful…” Nikita rambled out and Michael moved to the coffee table and leaned over the wood to grab Nikita’s hand before she could pull away from him. He yanked at her and forced her to look at his eyes. “I know that it isn’t going to be easy. That’s all I have confirmed right now.”
Nikita slipped her hands away from Michael as she leaned back in the couch. She clenched her jaw as she blinked her eyes, trying not to cry. “Mick did something wrong… right? He tried to keep tabs of her…”
“Kita,” Michael spoke as he took the wide stride over the coffee table and sat down right on top of it, not giving Nikita the opportunity to slip away from where she was. He was afraid that she was going to leave the room and that would make this more difficult. “Mick did exactly what you told him to do.”
Nikita flinched. “I did… something wrong.”
“No,” Michael shook his head from side to side. “You had no control over what happened. You couldn’t have foreseen what happened.”
“But something happened?” Nikita inquired and Michael nodded his head up and down. He waited as Nikita pushed her hands into her thighs and then pushed them to the couch. “What?”
Michael leaned back a little bit, feeling that right now Nikita was staying where she was. He swallowed against his raw throat and licked his lips slowly. “Did you hear about the children’s service office that was attacked by an organized crime family?”
“The mob?” Nikita questioned as she shook her head. “I didn’t hear anything about anything… I blocked news media stories about adoption… and things…”
Michael felt the stab in his heart grow broader once he realized how much Nikita had hurt inside of Section and how many drastic things she had done to protect herself. It would have been easier if she had any knowledge about what had happened.
“The church that Mick left our daughter… fed into this service office… and around that time a mistress to someone in the organized…”
“The mob,” Nikita corrected and Michael nodded his head. “The mob… the mistress gave up a baby instead of having it grow up in the mob… and the mob went to get the child back once it was found out.”
“And they took our daughter instead?” Nikita gasped and Michael shook his head and then frowned. “It’s much more complicated than that.”
“But the mob has her.”
“I don’t know,” Michael shrugged his shoulders. “There ended up being more children there at that center than there should have been… and all of the records were destroyed… meaning that they needed to have parents come forward to say that they really wanted their child up for adoption…”
“But I couldn’t do that,” Nikita gasped and Michael nodded his head. “You weren’t the only one… and there were children from about five years old to infants… they were scattered around the states… to protect the possible child that they aren’t sure was left there or not… and they…”
Michael stopped. He couldn’t say it. But Nikita’s eyes filled with tears. “They couldn’t be adopted.”
Michael nodded his head up and down to confirm. Nikita swallowed back hard as her instinct to purge of some sort almost took over. She inhaled and then swallowed. “I thought… she would have a family…”
“Some have been put into foster care…”
“I thought she would have a real mother, Michael… a real father…” Nikita hissed as she wrapped her arms around her body. “I failed.”
“You couldn’t have known this,” Michael leaned forward to look at Nikita, but she turned her head away. She was in pain and she didn’t want to look at him. Michael leaned back to where he was and waited. Nikita slowly turned to look at him. “We are going to find her.”
Nikita stood up and washed her mouth out as she heard the knock at the bathroom door. She hadn’t been hiding her upset stomach but she didn’t discuss it with anyone. Adam peered into the bathroom from the crack that Nikita had opened the door. “Beatrice is here…”
“Hi, Nikita,” Beatrice spoke as she took her hand and opened the door a bit more. “Why didn’t someone call me earlier?”
“I knew that I would have these… when we found her,” Nikita explained as she looked at Adam as he frowned. “Dad said not to say too much until he has the test results.”
Beatrice looked at Nikita and touched Adam’s shoulder. “Adam… let me talk to Nikita…”
“He said we can’t get hopeful,” Adam pointed out and Beatrice nodded her head as she swallowed pass a lump. Something told her that Nikita and Michael had a good sense of what the tests were going to say. “This is something I need to talk to Nikita about. Your dad is giving you good advice… but it doesn’t mean that Nikita doesn’t need to talk about the possibilities.”
“But we wanted to find her!” Adam protested and Nikita turned away, covering her mouth and closing her eyes.
Beatrice pushed Adam backwards as she moved to rub Nikita’s back as she squatted at the toilet. She turned back to Adam. “Later, Adam.”
Beatrice rubbed at Nikita’s back as she noted Adam’s footfalls as he walked away. She hoped that Adam didn’t call Michael. Right now, Beatrice wasn’t sure that Michael’s presence would make this any easier on Nikita.
Beatrice didn’t talk. She soothed Nikita as she felt Nikita panting. The woman was overwhelmed and there were details that Beatrice didn’t know yet – but she didn’t need to know.
As Nikita leaned away and reached for the glass and wash cloth, Beatrice handed them over. “You’ve been having these since you found her?”
Nikita nodded her head as she slowly stood up so she could put water into the glass and wash her mouth out. “Everything started… then.”
“Memories of when you gave birth?” Beatrice asked and Nikita nodded her head as she gasped and closed her eyes. Beatrice waited and Nikita opened her eyes while swallowing. “And when I found out what happened… that she wasn’t… safe…”
“And you came home?” Beatrice tried to understand the situation.
“For the DNA test… and because it would be suspicious for Michael to contact the authorities to see about her from the city that we found her in,” Nikita outlined as she held onto the sink with shaky hands.
Beatrice processed what she heard, as she knew that she was missing something important. It was the third time that she repeated in her head what Nikita had said that it stuck out. “Michael is going to the authorities? Why not the both of you?”
Nikita looked up at the ceiling. “A mother would have come forward by now… and she needs to be with us… and if that means that Michael can get her… so be it…”
Beatrice watched as Nikita turned her head to the side. It was clear that thinking this way was what Nikita felt she had to do, but it was also traumatically linking her right back to those PTSD flashes that was taking her over again.
Moments later, Walter lifted the baby up with tears in his eyes. “Sugar… it’s a girl… it’s a girl…”
Beatrice pulled at Nikita’s arm. “Let’s get out of here… and talking about something else… you must have been thinking about this since you found her.”
Nikita shrugged her shoulders and Beatrice nodded her head. “Yeah… and maybe we can get some tea… and some cookies.”
“I’m not hungry,” Nikita shook her head and Beatrice exhaled.
This was bad.
