“What are you doing out here on the stairs, Michael?” Walter asked as he moved from his car up to the house. Michael pulled his head up and looked over his shoulders to the door and sighed. He had half hoped that Nikita would have noticed that he hadn’t left yet, but since she hadn’t it just told him how degraded she was right now.

Michael didn’t need the lecture that he got from Beatrice and Ellie when he walked downstairs. They had heard at Nikita in the hallway wishing him luck in making the report and thought that Michael was going to do as she asked. Michael took the verbal lashing and walked outside thinking that he was going to do what Nikita asked and then stopped on the stairs.

There was no way he could do what Nikita asked him to do.

Michael also didn’t know how he could tell Nikita that he wasn’t going to do what she had asked.

“Michael?” Walter asked he stopped in front of Michael and stared down at the man. Michael turned his head to look up at Walter and pushed his hands into the jean pockets. “I got the official results.”

“So you, and I take it Nikita, know that April is your daughter according to science,” Walter shrugged his shoulders. “Still doesn’t explain why you are out here.”

Michael groaned and shook his head. “Why are you making this harder than this already is?”

“What am I doing?” Walter asked and Michael blinked his eyes. “You know Nikita’s plan.”

“And I take it that this is your way of going on strike,” Walter commented as if it was nothing. Michael tilted his head forward as he pulled his hands out of his jeans and rubbed them along the back of his neck. “I understand all the theories that Nikita tells me… the facts of what has happened to others who have tried to get children… especially those who have been assigned to this Todd man… Logically it makes sense.”

“Parenthood isn’t about logic,” Walter snorted as he turned and sat down on the stairs. “But you also feel how important it is to get April quickly.”

“Yes,” Michael nodded his head up and down. “Because the picture that Mick continues to paint… and from the records that Jason found in that school… indicate that she needs us…”

“But?”

Michael cleared his head and blinked back the tears. “She is going to need Nikita the most. And if I go and claim her this way… I don’t know if I’ll ever get back my Kita.”

“Then find another way.”

“I can’t,” Michael groaned and Michael watched as Walter shook his head sadly from side to side. “You are letting Nikita dictate. When has that worked?”

Michael moved away from Walter in reaction. “I won’t go and act like I did in Section.”

“That’s not what I’m suggesting,” Walter clarified himself quickly without getting frustrated. “Remember when you found her in that alley… and when she wouldn’t listen to anyone in the hospital. You took control by being in control. You need to be that way again. You can listen to her suggestions, but right now, she isn’t communicating what she needs and she thinks too much about what she thinks others need right now.”

Michael blinked his eyes as he rubbed his hands together while leaning forward. Walter waited and saw that Michael was slightly processing what he was saying. Walter knew that he had to continue outlining what he was saying. Michael needed Walter to be the voice in his head that Michael was ignoring right now.

“Neither of you know exactly what April needs right now. There are theories on what she needs and I think we all agree that she needs her parents because she doesn’t have them… but that is all that you know right now. I can’t imagine that it will be the best for her to only know one parent and a step parent… when she actually has two real parents right now… “ Walter spoke and Michael started to bob his head up and down.

“She is going to be so upset,” Michael declared gently.

“I think she is going to be grateful,” Walter stated as he looked at Michael and waited. Walter stood up and pushed his hands against his back. “Although, it probably isn’t going to be fun. Do you want me to get the house empty? I am sure that the ladies and I can take Adam over to that fun arcade place that he wants to go to.”

“He is with Rhoda and Lisa right now,” Michael replied as he rubbed his hands together and stood up. “And I don’t care if you are around.”

“Sugar would care.”

“It would help if she would hear all of you agree with me,” Michael pointedly spoke. “Everyone is worried about how she is doing so they don’t disagree with her much.”

Walter hung his head and shook his head. “I should have been around more… I was trying to give the space…”

“I know,” Michael turned and looked at the door. “This could backfire. This could make Kita worse.”

“Yep, it could,” Walter spoke as he looked at the door and back to Michael. “But I don’t see you going to that car right now and doing as she desires. So, unless you plan on bunking out here… you have a decision to make.”
