Walter hadn’t felt this nervous in a long time. It had to be when he was back in Section he last felt like he was walking such a fine line and this time, it mattered so much more. He watched as he walked down the hallway and he fought against the urge to stop and think about what could happen. He needed to act right now or he could find reasons not to go forward.

Getting to the door, he knocked and leaned his head to look into the room. The woman who sat there in the room that thankfully looked a lot like a hotel room, turned and smiled.

And Walter saw where Nikita got her blue eyes.

“Hi,” she spoke and Walter whispered it back. She blinked her eyes. “I don’t know you.”

“No you don’t, Mrs. Whitwirth,” Walter admitted as he walked in. “My name is Walter.”

She tilted her head to the side and smiled back. “Call me Winnie.”

She looked around and motioned for Walter to sit down. “I’m sick some days. Sometimes I don’t remember much. But today is good.”

“That’s what the nurse told me,” Walter admitted as he sat down and looked at her. Her smile was a lot like Nikita’s too.

“What is a young man like you doing here seeing an old woman like me?” Winnie questioned as she folded her hands on her lap. “I haven’t had guests… I believe, ever.”

Walter leaned forward slightly. “You had a daughter. Do you remember her?”

“Bert…” Winnie rasped as she blinked back tears. “I didn’t want her to leave.”

“So you remember Roberta?”

“Today,” Winnie nodded her head up and down. “Today is a good day.”

Walter paused and Winnie shifted in her seat. “Although… sometimes good days… are sad days when I remember that she left… and she never got back in touch with us…”

Walter watched as Winnie started to twist her hands around. They had warned him that sometimes when she got emotional, Winnie would start to forget things more frequently and there was no warning. Walter wasn’t sure if this was going to help out anyone, but he paused and cleared his throat after a couple minutes. “Winnie… why did Roberta leave?”

“I called her Bert,” Winnie lifted her chin. “My Gene… he hated when I called her Bert… in public I had to call her Berta… but she liked Bert best of all. I know that he hated it… and I loved him… but we often didn’t agree about Bert.”

Walter swallowed and slowly exhaled. “Why did she leave?”

“She was caught up with some boy,” Winnie shook her head from side to side. “Never tried to come back.”

Walter rubbed his hands together. “Did you know that Roberta had a child?”

Winnie flinched and shrugged her shoulders but then stopped. “I heard… possibly… but never knew for sure… she was gone… Is she looking for me?”

“Roberta has passed away,” Walter explained and Winnie closed her eyes. “The child should live longer than the parent.”

“But her daughter is very much alive,” Walter added quickly and Winnie looked like he had caused her to stop breathing. Finally Winnie rubbed a hand against her face. “I’m a grandmother?”

“Yes,” Walter nodded his head up and down. “In fact, you are a great-grandmother.”

Winnie looked around the room and blinked her eyes. ‘I didn’t think I had family.”

“Neither does your granddaughter… not a biological family,” Walter paused as he almost said something more about what Roberta had done to Nikita, but knew that it was wrong. Winnie was having a good day and hearing more things about her daughter could make her slid into a bad day.

“I don’t remember things that well,” Winnie shook her head. “I might not remember you tomorrow.”

“Well, I’d be willing to tell you a couple more times… because you might not remember things… and your granddaughter… she remembers too many things,” Walter stood up and moved to the window. “I think you should meet her.”

“She knows about me?”

“Yes,” Walter nodded his head as he faced Winnie.

“What’s her name? I might not know it after hearing it… but I want to know it now…” Winnie questioned as she tilted her head to the side. Walter rubbed his hands together before answering. “Her name is Nikita.”

“Nikita…” Winnie repeated for several minutes. “She wants to meet me?”

“She needs to meet you,” Walter replied as he walked back to the chair and sat down. “I could take you to her.”

Winnie leaned away and blinked her eyes. “Bert… she hurt my granddaughter? Nikita has been hurt?”

Walter diverted his eyes and shook his head. “Those details don’t matter right now Winnie. Nikita just needs to know you. She needs to see that she can be a mother.”

“Bert didn’t do her good,” Winnie winced as she blinked back tears. “Why didn’t Bert come to me? I could have helped. I wanted to be a grandmother.”

“It’s not too late.”

“But I might not remember,” Winnie protested and Walter leaned over and took her hands. “No one expects you to remember everything. Just trying is going to be enough. Trust me, Winnie.”

Winnie started to nod her head. “I want to meet her. I want to meet Nikita.”
