Nikita pulled a light sweater over her arms as she stepped into the twilight on the back porch. She closed her eyes as she breathed in the cooler air that had settled in this evening. It was unseasonably cool but Nikita needed that right now.

Her mind was full and she was grateful to have met Winnie.

And sad to have met Winnie.

It had been amazing to have her grandmother there, unconditionally loving her. She showered Nikita with love and wisdom that Nikita never thought she would receive from someone related to her. It was magical.

Until Winnie forgot.

Nikita had tried to focus on those earlier moments and she tried to not focus on when Winnie forgot why she was in the house. Nikita then had to deal with whatever had set Adam off today and she just wanted to get thru the night with fewer things on her mind.

Yet, out of left field, Nikita remembered something that she had read in one of Madeline’s diary entries. Nikita didn’t understand why she was a topic that Madeline wrote so much about, but Nikita would never get those answers. But the fact was that Madeline did write about her a lot.

The entry that Nikita was remembering now was done on Madeline’s electronic diary, which was something that wasn’t meant to be too personal. That’s why Nikita had read it. The handwritten diaries still remained mostly unread and nowhere near where she was now.

In that entry, Madeline had theorized that if Nikita had any exposure to another relative that would have taken some interest in the child that she would have never been in the position where Section One could have recruited her.

“Kita?” Michael spoke as he walked out and immediately found her standing there. He placed his hands on her arms and rubbed them. “It’s chilly out here.”

“It’s refreshing,” Nikita replied as she looked up at the sky and then looked out towards the horizon of the backyard. It was several moments before she turned to look at Michael. “I haven’t thanked you.”

“For what?”

Nikita tilted her head and blinked her eyes. “Michael…”

“Bringing Winnie here was Walter’s idea,” Michael shook his head from side to side. He stopped when Nikita touched his face with her chilly fingers. “You are cold, Kita.”

“I’m fine,” Nikita blinked back tears as she looked at Michael. “Thank you for not listening to me.”

Michael shook his head. “I did listen to you, Kita. I didn’t follow your directions. I heard everything that you said… I heard the real facts that are scary… and then I could see what those decisions were doing to you.”

Nikita pulled away and moved to the bench that was by the window. She rubbed her hands along the wood and watched as Michael joined her. “I still… worry that we are making a mistake…”

“But you haven’t had a PTSD flash since,” Michael pointed out. Nikita shrugged her shoulders. “I don’t know… I’ve thought about things…”

“Thinking about the past is a lot different than the flashes, Kita. You know that,” Michael stated calmly as he took Nikita’s hand. “It’s natural to think about things in the past when dealing with regular life. We just have a lot to think about.”

Michael watched as Nikita looked at him with her blue eyes. “April.”

“Yeah,” Michael nodded his head up and down. “Our daughter.”

Nikita turned her head and then focused back on Michael. “I… I always said that we would find her… but I guess… part of me was prepared… not too.”

“That is something that I understand,” Michael rasped as he nodded his head up and down. “Because I felt the same way… I would tell everyone that we were going to find her, but part of me doubted that it was possible.”

Nikita leaned her head down on Michael’s shoulder. “We are going… to get her, Michael.”

“We are going to find a way,” Michael nodded his head up and down as he held onto Nikita’s hands. “Laura is going to be talking to her father into coming here… she thinks he’ll be here tomorrow and he will help us.”

Nikita exhaled and nodded her head. “Joshua Ferguson.”

“Yes,” Michael confirmed as he leaned his head down to Nikita’s. “This has been hard for you.”

“Nothing has ever really been easy,” Nikita whispered and Nikita jerked. She looked at Michael and swallowed. “That sounded bad…”

Michael leaned forward to press his forehead against hers. “I get what you were trying to say, Kita. I understand.”

Nikita felt Michael press his lips against hers and she tenderly responded with the tender kiss. She pulled away and kept the touch of her forehead against Michael’s. “I worry… that I’m going to wake up and find out that this has been a dream too.”

“It isn’t.”

Nikita nodded her head up and down before pulling her head up. She shifted into Michael’s arms and sighed. “Just in case… hold me…”
