“You had a rotation through Kosovo, right?” Tom asked as he sat at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee in his hands as Todd stood with his back against the counter. Todd watched as the pain flashed through Todd’s eyes. There was no way to miss that reaction. “Yes… I don’t like to think about it.”

“What does this have to do with April?” Laura inquired and Tom looked at Laura and then her father. It was Joshua who reached out and rubbed Laura’s shoulder. “Let him do this, Laura.”

“I’m asking the same thing,” Todd countered as he placed the coffee cup down, absolutely not needing to drink it now that Tom had mentioned Kosovo.

“I need to use an example here… of something that you might not believe if I just started to talk about it. But you were in Kosovo… and you had lots of rough missions,” Tom explained and continued, not giving Todd time to really think about what he had just explained.

“Enough,” Todd managed to choke out.

“But there was one… that went easy, right?” Tom inquired. Todd started to nod his head up and down immediately. “Yeah… it was all taken care of for us… we were worried about nuclear devices… it was volunteer basis but everyone on my unit volunteered… we knew that we could end up exposed to radiation or worse… some of the guys had written letters home in case they didn’t come back…”

Laura swallowed hard. She knew that there were things in the world that she didn’t want to know about and this was among those things.

Todd shifted and rubbed at his aching neck. “We came across a village that was wiped out… and we were heading to a town that we were to meet up with a faction… they were going to think we were on their side but the intelligence said that they weren’t good… they were moving arms… but when we got there… the work had been done… and the arms were there for us to just secure.”

“You didn’t think anything about it?” Tom inquired and Todd frowned. “There were lots of organizations in the area.”

“But you checked.”

“Not everything gets on the books,” Todd nervously chuckled.

“A group named Section took care of it,” Tom explained. He watched as there was some recognition in Todd’s eyes again. “You heard of them?”

“Rumors,” Todd whispered and Tom nodded his head. “They don’t exist any longer.”

“But what does this have to do with April?” Todd inquired as he shook his head. “I don’t mind the history lesson…”

“There were lots of innocents who worked in Section… their means were not just at all… but they saved the world so many times over from nuclear meltdowns and devastation… stopped chemical and biological warfare… in an age that they were needed,” Tom outlined.

Finally Todd moved to the table and sat down. “April?”

“Two operatives fell in love,” Tom whispered with a shrug of his shoulders. “Powerful operatives… one got out and the other was left behind to run Section.”

“So he was left behind…”

“She was left behind,” Tom corrected as Laura shifted and looked at her father again.

“I heard rumors of a duo…” Todd rubbed his hands together as he thought for a moment. “Michael… Michael… that was the name of the one…”

“Nikita,” Laura supplied and Tom turned. He wasn’t going to give that out but it was now there for Todd to know. Todd was nodding his head up and down. “Yeah… I didn’t believe those rumors… that organization… it was too… covert… for anyone.”

“Non-sanctioned,” Tom corrected as he looked at Todd. “April is their daughter.”

Todd leaned back in disbelief. The rumors of this duo were a mixture of folklore, myth and insanity. But if they were real people, they had to be smart. Very smart. “Michael got out? He is looking for her?”

“They are both out,” Tom leaned forward. “Nikita did the hard job of closing Section.”

“So....it closed six years ago?”

“No,” Tom shook his head. “Just a couple years ago…”

“But April is almost seven.”

“Yes,” Tom nodded his head up and down. Todd jumped to his feet and started to pace the kitchen. “No… that means that Nikita was in… was Michael in? They had to have worked together to get the girl out… I mean, there is no way that anyone would have let a couple have a relationship… let alone a daughter… I mean, from what the rumors were about that organization… ruthless… ruthless didn’t even describe it… I mean… they handled Kosovo without batting their eyes… they were robots in the stories…”

“Stop it, Todd,” Joshua raised his voice and this caused Todd to stop and look at Joshua. “Did you know about this?”

“There are only a few people who knew of what was Section… I knew of them and I knew a bit about them. I didn’t know the details. I didn’t know Michael and Nikita.”

“But now?”

“They are amazing people, Todd,” Joshua spoke with a gentle voice. “They made the impossible happen.”

“But?” Todd inquired.

“They weren’t robots,” Joshua rasped as he blinked his eyes.

“Absolutely not,” Tom agreed with a nod of his head. “I can’t even think about how Nikita gave up her daughter right after being born… to basically be smuggled out of Section…”

“And she didn’t think she would ever get out of Section. She was sure that she would never get a chance to know of her daughter,” Laura inserted as she looked at Todd as he shifted his weight from foot to foot.

He then moved back to the chair and sat down. “So… it wasn’t the mob…”

“No,” Tom shook his head. “It was unfortunate that April was there… Nikita knew nothing about where her daughter was… “

“How can you be sure that April is their daughter?” Todd asked and he swallowed as he leaned away from the table. There was no way that this trio was here without proof. “You got proof somehow.”

“DNA,” Laura commented and Joshua cleared his throat. “Nikita was going to have Michael come forward… alone…”

Todd turned his head to the side and pressed his lips together. “Yeah… I’d trust that…”

“But not if she was involved,” Joshua stated and Todd looked at Joshua with harsh eyes. “Would you after all this time?”

Joshua slightly swung his head from side to side but stopped. “That’s not what we are doing.”

“April needs her parents,” Tom stated.

“And her parents need her,” Laura finished.

And then they waited.
