“I didn’t tell her why we are here,” Todd warned as he looked at Michael and Nikita as they were in a safe location in Chicago. They had met with Todd the previous night and had to send Tom, Laura and Joshua away because they were trying to talk for everyone involved.

Nikita looked like she hadn’t slept last night and Todd knew from their discussion last night that she just wanted to see her daughter and she wanted her daughter to be ok. She admitted to Todd about her Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and he knew that Nikita was afraid that it wouldn’t make her a good mother.

It made her a great mother.

Todd watched as Nikita stepped back from the door. “Maybe… we shouldn’t…”

“Kita,” Michael reached up and grasped Nikita’s shoulders. “We are fine.”

“We didn’t know about David Fanning… and there are probably others out there… Adam has been with you long enough… but why risk her life too?” Nikita stammered as she reached for her phone to only find Michael taking it out of her hand. “Jason is running things… and you have systems upon systems that will alert you days ahead of anything happened. We are safe. We can have our daughter.”

“If this goes well,” Todd pointed out as he shifted his weight. Nikita could easily make him start to doubt this, but after all the stories that Tom told him and the research that Tom allowed him to complete, Todd found after a week of hearing their names, Todd was almost still star-struck. And now that he has met Michael and Nikita, he could see so much of both of them in April. “Now remember… she sometimes doesn’t talk that much. In fact, she can go days without talking if she wants to… and I can’t think that she is happy being here.”

Nikita nodded her head up and down. Todd opened the door and walked in. He had showed Michael and Nikita April’s file last night, although he was almost sure that they had seen most of it prior to the meeting. They had seen pictures of her so there was no huge gasp when they entered the room and saw April sitting on the couch with a book on her lap. “Hi, April. I brought some friends of mine to meet you.”

The room was silent as the door swung close with barely a click. Nikita held Michael’s hands as she smiled at the girl who looked up from the book. April calmly put a bookmark in between the pages and closed the book.

Todd waited and worried that April was just going to continue to be quiet. He cleared his throat. “I know that we had to come a long way from Salt Lake City… but I thought you’d like to meet my friends and you’d like to get away from the city for a while… and from school.”

April glanced at Todd for a split second and turned her attention back to Michael and Nikita. Her eyes were taking in all the details and there were lots of thoughts behind April’s eyes. She was always deep in thought but Todd was worried that she was keeping it all in.

At the very least she should be able to say hello!

April slipped off of the couch and stood up. She moved closer to Todd as she didn’t let her eyes move off of Michael and Nikita. She even allowed Todd to touch her shoulder as she tilted her head to the side. She smiled brightly and licked her lips.

And said something that Todd never anticipated.

“You are my real mother and father,” April spoke clearly and confidentally.

Michael gasped and blinked his eyes. April was so much like Nikita with that statement. It was stunning how like Nikita that statement was. He was taken back that he missed the second that Nikita started to cry. She was speechless and neither of them had confirmed anything for April.

She needed that.

“Yes,” Michael rasped as he nodded his head up and down. “We are your mother and father.”

“Biological mother and father,” Todd added and April looked at him to roll her eyes. It was a clear indication that Todd didn’t need to say that. But he didn’t know how she could know.

April stepped forward and tilted her head to the other side. “What took you two so long?”
