Nikita sat down on the couch as April stood there, smiling broadly. “I mean, it has been years. Or did Todd actually kidnap me?”

“April,” Todd chided the girl as Michael cracked a smile. “We wish we could have been here sooner, April.”

“I hate that name,” April huffed as she sat down on the couch and studied Nikita. She tilted her head to the side and smiled. “I am real.”

Nikita was speechless again as she found it hard the way this little thing that looked so sweet was talking to her. She was prepared for the silent treatment that Todd had informed them about. Nikita had been ready for that. Not this.

“This is a difficult time, April. Give your mother…” Todd looked at Nikita as she rubbed her hand against her neck at the term mother and then he looked back to April. “Give all of you some time to get used to this.”

April thought about the statement as she leaned back on the couch and picked up the book. She tossed it about in her hands and then put it back down. She leveled her eyes with Todd and Nikita saw that blank stare that she had seen so often from Michael and even a couple times from Adam on her daughter’s face. “My name isn’t April.”

Michael chuckled as he tilted his head to the side, trying to play off the seriousness that was in his daughter’s voice. “Really?”

“That wasn’t meant to be my name,” April announced again and Nikita dropped her hand as April continued. “You would have given me another name.”

“I didn’t,” Nikita shook her head from side to side.

“April… I know that you feel this way…” Todd spoke and April glared at him. “They named me after the month that they decided they couldn’t call me Jane Doe any longer. What if that month would have been October or July? Would that have been my name?”

The room grew quiet and Nikita leaned forward. She cleared her throat and studied her daughter. Part of her just wanted to hug this girl and the other part wanted to talk to Michael about how scared she was because April was wicked smart. Nikita feared that if they thought Adam was a handful, this could easily become even more than Adam. “So you think you know what your name should have been?”

“Yes,” April announced and Nikita tilted her head to the side. “So… you’d like us to change your name from April… to this new name? I think we’d like to hear it.”

April nodded her head as she sighed with relief. “Sabine.”

Nikita closed her eyes as she felt as if she had been hit in the heart directly. There was just no possible way! She didn’t even register the gasp from Michael. “That was my mother’s name.”

Nikita jerked her head and grasped for Michael as her entire body started to race. It made no sense how their daughter could have picked that name out of all the names in the world as the name that should have been hers.

Nikita stared at the positive test for another second and then went to the incinerator. She tossed the plastic strip into the opening and made sure that the fire was on as high as it could. There couldn’t be any proof of what she had just seen.

She couldn’t be pregnant.

Glancing down at her stomach, she thought about the child that she carried. Michael’s baby.

She had sent Michael away to be with his son as he was supposed to be. Now she was carrying a part of Michael and giving life to something that he didn’t know about, and she couldn’t risk. There simply was no way that she could have a baby inside of Section. There was no one that could know.

Nikita had tried to stay away from files related to Michael since she had taken over. It wasn’t worth the pain that she felt when reading about things that he had done. And those few times where she absolutely had to make sure that she fell asleep for just a few hours to keep on going, the only way to do so was to read about Michael. It was during one of those evenings that she had come across the names of Michael’s parents. Joseph and Sabine.

Sabine would be a good name for a baby – or maybe Sabina. But it would be perfect name to honor the woman that Michael loved as his mother.

Nikita pulled her hand away from her stomach, painfully aware that she couldn’t do that again as it might be seen by the wrong person. She also knew that she couldn’t think about naming this child because she wasn’t ever going to be able to keep this child.

Maybe there would be a way to get the child to Michael. That was her first hope. But ultimately, the number one priority was to protect the baby and get it out, even if that wasn’t to Michael’s capable arms.

She wouldn’t be a mother. She was a vessel and that was the role that Nikita had to play to make sure that they baby was safe.

To make sure that Sabine was safe.

Nikita shook her head. She would have to destroy that file or she would continue to think of that name and she couldn’t name this child. That was never going to be her job.

“Is she ok?” April whispered as Nikita was finally able to draw in some air and think with her mind and not with the memories. Nikita could barely register Michael’s hands around her body. She must have been deep within those memories.

“It’s not possible…” Nikita whispered as she shook her head and looked at Michael. “I thought of your mother’s name… like twice when I found out… after I took the test… and then I didn’t allow myself to think of a name… so she would be safe…”

“She is safe,” Michael pointed out as he pushed the hair out of Nikita’s face.

“April, your mother really was a hero to protect you. That’s why it has taken so long for them to come to you,” Todd sat down beside April. “She is going to be ok… but she had a really bad memory about what she had to do to protect you. Sometimes heroes can be haunted.”

April trembled but she cleared her throat. “When do I get to go home with you?”

Nikita pulled her head up, hazy about what was going on. Her mind was spinning and she swore that she had just heard April ask when she could come home with them. Nikita wanted that so badly, but Todd had indicated that he thought that April would need to transition.

“We’d like to do that soon… but you have friends back in Salt Lake City,” Michael choked out as he was lying in saying that he didn’t want to take her right now. He didn’t want April to go away without them.

“They aren’t family,” April shook her head. “I want to go home with you… now.”

“God… she sounds like Adam,” Nikita whispered to Michael and April jerked. “Adam? Do I have a younger brother?”

“An older half-brother,” Michael corrected Adam’s relationship and age to April. She clapped her hands together. “Half-brother is still a brother!”

April still sounded so much like Adam in that statement that Nikita just looked at Michael with a look of awe. April was just everything that Todd said she wasn’t so far.

Todd knew that this was April at her best and that just moving with Michael and Nikita might look ok on the surface, but there were going to be bumps. Probably mostly it would be prevalent at school. He knew that Nikita had to work through things and this was going to be a bumpy road.

He had to make a decision.

“We are going to get your things from Salt Lake City… and then we are going to meet up with your parents… you can live with them when you all agree that it is time… and I’ll stay around for a while,” Todd outlined. Michael had suggested this last night and Todd had indicated that he wouldn’t do it. But now, with the magic of the name of Sabine, he had to be around for a bit more.

And he was sure that Michael and Nikita were going to need him.

“Ok… but can I change my name now?” April inquired.
