April had talked a lot and Todd glanced at Nikita. She was happy but it was clear that every since April said that she thought her name should be Sabine, she was a bit off. Todd couldn’t even imagine how it felt to suddenly be seeing your daughter that you thought you were never going to see in front of you.

Michael continued to rub Nikita’s hands as he talked with his daughter, giving her some information about Adam and saying that they would have to discuss her name change later.

There was a knock and Todd went to the door. “Hi Tom and Laura… this might be good timing.”

Laura looked around the room and nodded her head. Nikita needed some space and Laura could only hope that April would allow that to happen. April looked at them and smiled. “Are you my aunt and uncle?”

“We…” Tom stammered and then shook his head. “We are friends of…”

“They are close enough to being your aunt and uncle… you have others like them too…” Michael spoke up, saving Tom and Laura for the moment because he was hopefully that they would be able to help him and Nikita.

“I’m Laura and this is Tom,” Laura spoke as Michael’s answer gave her the ability to not be taken back by this girl. She looked so happy and it was clear that she had been talking almost non-stop. Nikita was smiling and she was happy. But Nikita needed to breathe.

“My name is not really April,” April declared. Tom and Laura watched as the three adults in the room rolled their eyes slightly. But no one spoke. Laura twitched and sighed. “What do you think your name is?”

“Sabine,” April answered and Nikita jerked slightly. It was clear that this was a sore point right now for Nikita.

“I think April is a pretty name and that everyone is just so happy to meet you right now… that we just want to get to know you first… and worry about your name later. Does that make sense?” Laura bent down and gazed into April’s eyes. She wasn’t going to fight this suggestion. She was so aware of making them happy that she just started to nod her head. Plus, Laura had a sense that April just really wanted someone to get to know her.

“I think the restaurant downstairs makes really good hot fudge sundaes… Todd probably have to talk to Michael and Nikita…”

“My mom and dad,” April corrected as Laura was standing up. Laura nervously laughed and nodded her head. “Yes… your parents.”

Laura felt that it came way too easily for April and in some ways it scared her. But yet, it was comforting because she couldn’t imagine how it would have been if April couldn’t see them as her parents.

“Of course you can go with Tom and Laura,” Nikita spoke and Michael nodded his head. “I think it’s a nice idea.”

“I have to give you something first, mom,” April declared as she stood up. She moved towards the couch and looked at her. “Lean forward…”

Nikita glanced at Michael and leaned forward as requested.

Then April threw her hands around her mother’s neck and pulled Nikita tight against her.

Nikita felt her daughter’s arms around her neck and the tears started to flow. She wasn’t sure if she was breathing, but she felt her daughter and continued to allow her daughter to hug her. Nikita found her arms moving around her daughter, lightly rubbing her fingers along her back.

It was unlike any feeling. Nikita knew when she last felt like this. It was during those five minutes that she had after she gave birth and before she handed her over to Walter. Those five minutes were sad, but her body knew this being was special and now Nikita felt that again.

April pulled away first and Nikita pulled her head to the side so that her daughter didn’t see the tears. Nikita pushed her hands against her face and choked out. “Get a big sundae too… I heard they are really good.”

“When I come back will you tell me more about Adam?” April asked as she looked at Michael. Michael bent down and was rewarded with a hug also.

Michael felt the threat of tears and swallowed hard to find April pulling away already excited about the sundae that was offered. It wasn’t probably the right thing to do right now, but he needed to talk to Nikita in private.

The room emptied out and Todd looked at Michael before slipping out also. Michael turned to Nikita. “It’s going to be ok, Kita… I know that this is all…”

Michael stopped as he really saw Nikita’s face. Earlier she had been forcing her smile, but now, even with tears still flowing from her eyes, it was a true smile. Michael smiled and nodded his head up and down. “She is so damn… special.”

“Smart,” Nikita added and Michael laughed. “Confident…”

“She is going to be a handful, Michael,” Nikita shook her head slightly. “We’ve had it easy with Adam.”

“We always liked a challenge, right?” Michael questioned and Nikita laughed again. She leaned into Michael and sighed. “I was so scared… and when she hugged me… I swear everything stopped…”

“I was afraid you were going to have another PTSD flash… you had one just a while ago,” Michael spoke frankly as he had to let Nikita know how impressed he was that she wasn’t falling apart when she got that hug. He had seen it about to happen but couldn’t will himself to stop the hug.

“I thought about when I last held her… but I didn’t have that painful flash back to the perch…” Nikita explained as she looked at Michael, the tears now all stopped. “I knew… that it was going to be fine… that I am going to get to hold her again… and again.”

Michael nodded his head up and down. “I felt that too, Kita…”

“I knew that she was coming for a hug… but I didn’t want it… but I’m so glad that she was so bold… and just hugged me.”

“She is a lot like you,” Michael wryly spoke as he stroked Nikita’s face. “You are ok now, right?”

“I’ve never felt like this, Michael,” Nikita whispered as she looked him. “I’ve never been… right. You know?”

Michael wasn’t sure exactly what she meant, but he nodded his head. She needed to see that. But he could see it transforming Nikita in just moments. He absolutely loved it.

This was going to be a new beginning.
