Mick shifted in the bed as he groaned while he saw Beatrice walk into the room. “I can’t believe that they won’t let me out unless you clear me.”
Beatrice turned to make sure that the door closed as she rubbed her hands together. She was tired. She had spent four days at Michael’s and Nikita’s. In the end, Beatrice felt like she had done nothing to help that situation. Nikita was trying to be the perfect mother and Beatrice couldn’t talk her out of doing her impression of June Cleaver.
That wasn’t the only problem in that family right now. Sabina was a handful and she was so excited with her family that she wasn’t full herself. It would be weeks, maybe even months, before anyone would have a good sense of what Sabina’s nature was going to be like. Add into the mix the obvious intelligence that even had Belinda stammering in wonder, like when she found Sabina reading Little Women in the living room over watching cartoons.
Lastly, Beatrice was sure that something was going on with Adam. He was going out of his way to show Sabina things that she asked about, especially the computer. But he didn’t seem like himself either and it was clear that Michael had noticed the same thing. But the boy was stubborn, much in the manner that Michael was stubborn, and wouldn’t admit to anything bothering him.
“You’ve been getting pretty angry lately… lashing out at people. That isn’t you,” Beatrice shrugged her shoulders slightly. Mick groaned. “I’m in a freaking nursing home!”
“A rehabilitation center,” Beatrice corrected and Mick practically growled. “Those are old people on each side of me… and across the hallway… they watch Perry Mason all day long very loudly because they can’t hear… and the nurses are old… this is an old person’s place.”
Beatrice blinked her eyes. There wasn’t an ideal situation for Mick but because of his outbursts the past few days, was why he hadn’t been released. Despite all that Nikita was going thru, she had managed to find a level home for Mick to go to. In fact, Nikita bought it for him and put it in his name. It was his new home. She also arranged for care, somehow finding time to interview the nurses, who were probably going to make Mick forget about every older nurse here, while Nikita also shipped in a special physical therapist from New York City to help Mick at his own house. Yet, Beatrice knew where this anger was coming from and it wasn’t fair.
“This is because Nikita hasn’t come to visit,” Beatrice declared.
And there was silence.
“She should have come to thank me,” Mick curtly spoke as he didn’t even look towards Beatrice. She sighed as she stepped forward. “She has been getting things ready for you…”
“Five minutes,” Mick hissed as he shook his head. “But I wasn’t important enough for Nikita to come and visit with me for five minutes to say thank you.”
“She has had her entire family changed with finding Sabina…”
“I didn’t even know that April wasn’t April any longer,” Mick spat as he shook his head back and forth. “You should just leave, Beatrice. Nikita was the one that was wrong. I was only important until April… Sabina was found. Now I don’t matter!”
The door opened and Beatrice didn’t turn to look. “I can’t tell you what is going on, Mick… but this hasn’t been easy for anyone.”
“Please don’t make excuses for me, Beatrice,” Nikita spoke as she stepped into the room and looked at Mick. “He has ever right to be upset with me.”
Beatrice cringed. This wasn’t going to help Nikita either. She wasn’t entirely at fault. If anything, Mick was being unreasonable and now Nikita was telling him that he was right. This wasn’t helpful to anyone.
“Nikita,” Mick spoke as he glared towards her and then turned away. “So Beatrice made you come.”
“No,” Nikita replied and Beatrice nodded her head. “I didn’t know that she was here. I thought she was with Sabina getting some sort of tests…”
“Intelligence and educational testing… trying to figure out which grade of school she belongs in,” Nikita stepped forward and swallowed. “They said that I should come back… but Sabina wasn’t really talking…”
“They are worried that she should still stay in kindergarten?” Mick inquired as he was concerned. Nikita shook her head from side to side.”Absolutely not… just wondering if she has math skills like her reading skills. I wouldn’t be surprised if her reading level is at least the sixth grade level.”
“Mick, things are not always as simple as you think they are,” Beatrice warned and Nikita touched Beatrice’s arm. “He was right. I need to thank him for finding and saving Sabina… and you can let the doctors know that Mick will be ready to be released this afternoon.”
“But the staff isn’t ready to start today,” Beatrice countered.
“I’ll be paying my penance… and Sabina will be able to thank Mick on her own,” Nikita announced as she turned to look at Mick. “If you trust me to do this for you, Mick.”
“Popsicle… I just needed to know that you all were ok. You don’t need to do this,” Mick’s voice softened and Beatrice shook her head. This was bad.
“I have my daughter. I haven’t been happier,” Nikita declared as she moved to the bed. “And I owe you so much for doing that. You made it happen, Mick.”
Mick smiled back to Nikita and then tilted his head to the side. “You look tired…”
“Tired being happy and catching up on lost time,” Nikita smoothly said but Beatrice shook her head slightly from side to side. It wasn’t a purely happy time for Nikita and Mick needed to know that. But Nikita wasn’t going to say it to him. She was giving him what she thought he needed right now.
Beatrice left the room. She wasn’t going to get Nikita to stop this and it was too late now.
