“Hello?” Walter called out as he walked into the house and pocketed his key. He heard the running tiny footsteps immediately and soon saw Sabina streaming down the stairs and launching herself towards him. Walter grabbed her in her leap and spun around. “Hey, gumdrop… what has you all wound up?”
“Hi Pap,” Sabina laughed as she slithered out of Walter’s arms. “I’m going for ice cream with Rhoda, Nat, Lisa and Adam.”
Adam walked down the stairs as he looked at Walter. “Yeah… Rhoda invited her. Hopefully they have sugar-free ice cream for little thing.”
Walter knew that it would be nice for sugar-free ice cream but he could sense that Adam was not happy that his sister was coming along. Walter looked around and squatted to look at Sabina. “And your mommy isn’t going?”
“She is finishing the painting in my room… and letting the smell leave the room,” Sabina announced and Walter glanced up at Adam. He rolled his eyes. “Sabina decided the color from three days ago was too baby-like.”
“It was too light,” Sabina corrected and Walter nodded his head slowly as he stood up. “And you aren’t a baby.”
“Exactly,” Sabina smiled broadly. She turned towards Adam. “Ready to go?”
“I guess,” Adam sighed as he looked up the stairs. “She was finishing up the last wall. You really should see her.”
Walter watched as the kids left the house. He knew that several days ago, Nikita had enjoyed painting with Sabina. They two had laughed so much but the sense was that Sabina didn’t have as much fun this time. He wondered how Nikita was doing because he had been asked by Michael to come over and check on her since he got stuck at the lab for the moment and couldn’t break to come over to check himself.
All of this followed a pretty huge argument between Michael and Nikita when Michael stopped Nikita’s plans on caring for Mick that first day out of the hospital. He had met Nikita at the door of the house she had bought and told Nikita that her job was done. It had been Mick who had called Walter when the couple was just shouting at each other outside. Both were upset. Nikita wasn’t willing to take orders from Michael and Michael wasn’t about to compromise. Walter had to drag Nikita away from the house, kicking and screaming.
The painting had been Walter’s suggestion to help divert Nikita’s attention from the anger that she had with Michael for doing something that Walter silently agreed was correct. There was no need for Nikita to feel guilty about what she thought she had done to Mick.
“Hey, Sugar… you got an empty house. Do you want me to just leave?” Walter asked as he walked up the stairs and pushed the door into a room that was just bad.
Pepto-Bismol pink.
Nikita dropped the paint brush and rubbed her hand up against her forehead, leaving a smear of the very bright pink paint on her skin there. It was in her hair already and Walter had to stop his reaction of walking out of the room. “Wow… that’s bright.”
“I shouldn’t… have listened to Sabina...” Nikita rasped as she blinked back tears. “I’m just… doing the wrong things.”
“Sugar, it’s been a rough transition,” Walter whispered and Nikita shrugged her shoulders. “Might not matter…”
“What are you talking about? Is Todd giving you some problems with Sabina?” Walter was anxious instantly. He thought that Todd was going back to Salt Lake City. He relaxed slightly as Nikita shook her head from side to side. “The tests came back… and it has been suggested that Sabina go to Mount Moonstone Academy.”
Walter paled. “That’s four hours away.”
“They said that no other school in the area can handle her intelligence,” Nikita shook her head back and forth as she sat down on the carpet and looked up at Walter. “I just got her.”
“They are suggesting that she goes there… no one can make you send her…”
“But the other schools… will be told what is thought… they can deny her…” Nikita rasped as she rubbed her forehead. “And I just… I don’t know… there is so much to do… and I get stuck… painting rooms…”
Walter mimicked Nikita’s body position and got down on the floor also, realizing that the pink walls seemed even brighter. “You have some time right now…. To do something for yourself, Sugar. What do you need?”
“It isn’t going to help me now,” Nikita shook her head from side to side. “I’m not good at this mom thing… I keep on getting it wrong… and I know that Adam is upset about something and I can’t seem to figure that out… and I have neglected all the photography stuff that I do really need to do… and I miss Michael… and I’m just… so tired.. that I can’t even sleep…”
Walter shifted to get closer to Nikita and he pulled her into his arms. “Oh, Sugar… you are just so tired… I think right now. .. you should just close your eyes… and worry about these things later…”
“It’s too pink in here,” Nikita shook her head but her eyes were closing. Walter shifted and leaned back slightly, not carrying if the wall that he was about to lean against was wet or not. “Well, I do have to admit the one thing that you aren’t good at is picking a color of pink for this room… and that is the only thing you can’t do.”
“Walter…”
“Nope,” Walter shook his head from side to side as he pressed a finger against her lips. “I’m an old man and I know when people can’t do things... so I judge you doing everything else fine… except for picking this paint color…”
Nikita focused on Walter as tears leaked out of her eyes and she groaned. “I should take a bath… get this paint out… and they’ll be back soon…”
“Take this time, Sugar,” Walter whispered gently. “And later, I’ll find a way to get Mick to figure out this room… because while you are about to fall asleep in my arms… no way is Sabina going to be able to sleep in this… it looks like medicine…”
But as Walter had talked, he lowered his volume and drew out the words, knowing that Nikita was falling asleep quickly. He exhaled slowly as he rubbed her hair back and hoped that this was going to be the start of things getting better. He was going to have to spend some time at this house. Beyond this nap, Nikita needed time with Michael and she needed to do things that she did before, like work. He was ready to step up and do that. It was the perfect job for this grandfather.
