Sabina sat on the couch and then tossed her hair back. “Mommy… am I a good model?”
Nikita chuckled and snapped a few photos. “Yes, you are, Sabina.”
They had been all thru the house taking photos since Nikita came home almost two hours ago. Sabina was a ham but that was ok for now. Nikita wasn’t sure if Sabina knew that her work was more than taking these fun photos, but that was ok for now.
The front door opened and Sabina jumped and ran. “Adam! Adam! Did you know that Mommy is a photographer?”
Adam nodded his head as he was surprised to see Nikita with the camera. “Yeah… I know.”
“Adam actually got me my first camera,” Nikita explained but Sabina was too focused on Adam right now. She pulled his hand. “Mommy has been taking my picture. Now I want you with me… in the living room… and then maybe outside. Mommy will take great pictures of us.”
“I’m sure that Nikita will take great photos. But not right now,” Adam wiggled his hand away from Sabina’s grasp. Nikita sat on the edge of the coffee table as Sabina tilted her head. That was a dead giveaway that Adam wasn’t getting away so easily.
“You don’t want a photo with me?”
“I didn’t say that, Sabina,” Adam sighed as he shifted his weight. “Nikita is taking your picture. This is special time with her.”
“Why don’t you call her mom?” Sabina inquired the question that had been pretty much a stable that hadn’t been answered. Adam had looked at his father to explain it, but Michael had told Sabina that Adam had another mother. This was something that Adam was going to have to explain to Sabina.
“Not now,” Adam shook his head. “Nikita came home from work to spend time with you.”
“I know that her name is Nikita. But she is our mom…. Our mother. Call her mom, or mommy… or ma… or mo… not Nikita,” Sabina ordered and Adam shook his head back and forth. “Leave it be, Sabina.”
“No,” Sabina stubbornly lifted her chin. “Don’t you love mommy?”
“She isn’t my mother,” Adam broke with a shout. “I have another mother.”
Sabina looked crestfallen for a second and then lifted her chin again. “Does it matter if you had another mom? Mommy is a mommy to you… why not call her that?”
“My mother is gone, Sabina,” Adam shook his head as he tried to calm down. “Nikita isn’t going to replace her. But Nikita is more than… well, I love her too... and I know that she loves me… and I know that she is like a mother… but she is… she is… she is Nikita. That’s who she is to me.”
Nikita choked back tears with what Adam had said. It meant a lot to hear that he loved her because she wasn’t always sure all the time.
“But that’s being a mom,” Sabina shook her head. “She is our mom.”
Adam rolled his eyes as he shook his head back and forth. “What I’m saying is that it is more special for me to call her Nikita… because that is who Nikita always has been for me… Nikita. It hurts to think of calling her mom… because she isn’t my real mom… Nikita is more… but I also want to love my mom and it makes me sad to think of her… and I don’t want that attached to Nikita too…”
“You’re just mean,” Sabina declared and Adam turned away. He was half way up the stairs before he came back, his eyes flashing with anger. “You don’t get to tell me what to do, Sabina. I’ve tried to be nice about this. But you are going to stop asking me about this. I don’t have to call Nikita any term of mom or mommy you try to make me do. It isn’t natural for me and it isn’t going to happen.”
Sabina started to cry. “Adam… I want us to have the same mom…”
“The same woman loves us,” Adam declared as he shook his head. “You are just being… selfish if you think that I have to call her mother to show that love to her.”
Adam held back more and he did this time escape upstairs. Sabina turned and looked at Nikita. “Should I call you Nikita too?”
“No,” Nikita shook her head as she didn’t think she could stand if Sabina didn’t call her mom since she had been calling her that from the first moment they had met. “You can call me whatever you wish to call me.”
“Why is everyone different for us? Paps… and Uncle Tom…” Sabina asked as she sniffled. Nikita reached out and wiped at Sabina’s tears. She wanted to help her daughter, but she was worried about the boy upstairs.
“Adam is older,” Nikita shifted and placed her camera upon the mantel. She looked around and grabbed a book from the shelf. “Why don’t you read this for a while… I have to go talk to Adam.”
“Will you make him happy again?” Sabina inquired as she took the book and sat down on the couch. Nikita bent down and kissed her daughter’s head. “I’ll do my best.”
“I know that you will,” Sabina grinned brightly. “And then you’ll take my picture with my brother.”
“When Adam is ready for that, Sabina,” Nikita stood up and sighed.
This wasn’t what she thought this afternoon was going to bring her once she had left Whitney, but she had to go with the flow for now.
